The dark night folded in around them, she could almost sense him next to her but something else was getting in the way a sense of dread, of something that no-one in the natural world would ever understand, but that was okay Buffy Summers wasn't from the natural world. Because Buffy Summers was the slayer the one girl in all the world that has the power to stop the spread of evil, and save the world. Again. For Buffy life was one big fight, and one of the things that made it more bearable was fighting next to her, the man she loved. Angel was her sort of boyfriend, they loved each other and that is what made their lives together so difficult, for Angel is a 243 year old vampire and Buffy is a 17 year old school girl /slayer their relationship was more than strained at times but nether of them could think of a life without the other.
"Stake." A voice sounded above Buffy steam of thought, before she had even thought about it her hand reached up and broke off a branch from a low hanging tree and had thrown it towards the sound.
"Thanks" Angel's voice sounded again and then the sound of a vampire being dusted.
"Wow that was fun" Buffy smiled wryly "remind me to get a hobby"
Angel glanced around not really listening
"Huh" he looked at her
"Hobbies, you know doing things for fun?"
"Oh yeah" giving her his full attention " You want to go to the Bronze"
"Really?" Buffy looked at him a little strangely "You want to go to the Bronze? Your not just saying that, really?"
His mind was starting to wonder again
"Angel?"
"Buffy?"
"You said you wanted to go to the Bronze, yes?" she looked at him making him make eye contact
"Yeah, if you want to, you want to right?"
"Yeah sure I do. Are you all right, Angel? You just seem a little" she paused not knowing if she should go on.
"What?"
"Elsewhere" she looked down at her feet then back up right into his eyes
"No I'm fine, the Bronze we were going to the Bronze"
They walked off together hand in hand, but, Buffy had a bad feeling and she needed to no why.
"Willow, Willow, Willow you are just too good" Xander Harris leaned across and hugged her. Tight.
"Xander, breathing, breathing" he let go just a little "Xander I know how happy you are but if you don't let me breathe then how am I going to help you get another" he had just got his first A+ since he could remember
"Okay Will your right" he gave her one more quick squeeze and then sat back in his place as Queen C came up and glared at him until he moved over.
"So Cordelia you've decided that it safe to be near me today, I'm touched"
"Well Willow told me that I had to be nice to you because you had a Maths test that you would probably fail and that I should be nice for once. I don't see why, you should be used to failing by now, because of all the practise you've had"
"Well thank you!!!!. Both of you...."
"I didn't say it like that I just said that you might be upset if you didn't do well" Willow butted in but Xander just glared at her
"I take away the hugs now" Xander pouted.

Buffy walked into the Bronze two steps ahead if Angel and immediately saw her friends at the table in the furthest corner from the door, they hadn't seemed to have noticed their arrival yet. She realised that Angel must have just walked in behind her as every single girl within a four-meter radius turned to look and started preening and pouting their lips. Buffy couldn't help it; she smiled turned around and put her left hand on his right shoulder.
"I love it when we come in her together" she whispered in his ear grinning
"Their faces when they see that your with...." she suddenly stopped and looked at him "Me right?" she looked deep into his eyes and he smiled, the little half smile that made her knees feel weak
"Who else?"
She tried to ignore the fact that he didn't answer her question in as many words
"Yeah" she said and forced the doubt out of her mind, well at least for the moment.
She put her arm through his and they walked deeper into the Bronze getting closer to her best friends, Willow Rosenburg the grade A student, Xander Harris well, not the grade A student and Cordelia Chase well Cordy wasn't exactly her friend but Xander seemed to like her, that is after the 12 years they ent hating each other and 5 years not knowing each other.
"Hi Will" she smiled as she came up behind them
"ARGH" Xander shot up about a foot in the air.

"Please Buff warn me when you sneak up on me," thinking about what he just said.
"Forget that, hi" he looked up seeing Angel for the first time
"Dead boy" he nodded
"Buffy, hi, Xander stop it, Angel hi" she smiled at Buffy looking sternly at Xander and then half smiled at Angel.
Things between Angel and her friends especially Xander were pretty bad, with good reason she supposed, after all Angel had tried to kill them all and had even succeeded once, snapping Miss Calendars neck as she ran for her life, but as she had told them before, gently, that that was Angelus and that he would never turn again, that she would never give him that one true moment of happiness.
"Hello, Buffy do you want a drink?"
"Soda, thanks" she glanced quickly up at him and then back at Willow, as he moved of to get her a soda and a drink for himself
"So Will, Dingoes playing tonight?"
"Yeah they're doing one set and that's it" she looked up at the stage and gave her own special smile that was only for Oz.
"So did you patrol already?" bringing her eyes back from the stage, glancing at Angel, Buffy noticed the unease in her voice but said nothing if they had to they would talk about it later but at the moment she just wanted to relax
"Yeah, it was slow" she replied
Angel returned with a soda for Buffy and something in a plastic cup for himself
"Here" he offered Buffy the drink which she took from him and sipped, she smiled at him.
THUD. Buffy's drink went flying all over her and the table and she sprawled on Angel, pushing herself up she spun around in a fighting stance and swung a fierce hook at the attackers chin.

Willow felt the splash of Buffy's soda on her new light blue woollen dress that went to just above her knee and new that only trouble would follow it. She saw before Buffy, the handsome guy in his early 20ties "“ maybe 21 "“ with light brown hair and an apologetic smile and then she saw nothing before she new what was happening the guy was flying through the air landing on his back maybe 5 meters away, and then Buffy springing up ready for the next round but the guy was out for the count.
She sprung up and rushed towards him taking her iced drink with her, she leaned over him as Buffy came more slowly towards them, she noticed that he was starting to come round at the same time she noticed the large crowd that was gathering.
"Buffy, get rid of the people" she whispered
"And, Buffy, don't be violent" she smiled
Buffy nearly said something but stopped herself.
"Okay, stay back, give him some room" she said half-heartedly
"Look Will maybe we should get out of here before he comes round?"
Angel came up behind her and Willow noticed how he slipped his arm around Buffy's waist
"I think maybe Buffy is right, maybe it is time to go?" he added
"No! The poor guy did nothing wrong he just bumped Buffy and she hit him" she paused "Not that its your fault Buff" she said in a rush
I hope she understands that I don't think she did it on purpose, but she was kind of ruff and he is just a human, but then she didn't know that, oh boy.
"I know you know," she said quietly
Argh.
The guy was trying to sit up now. Willow started to help him up but he pushed her away and sat up himself. His chin and neck were starting to go a funny red colour so she offered him the ice from her cup
"No, thank you" he said
Buffy walked right up to him and offered her hand to help him up this time he excepted and was up in a standing position in no time
"Look, I'm really, really sorry"
"No, its fine, you hit me I flew across the room and became unconscious" he smiled "It happens everyday"
"Ohhhh" she said starting to feel bad and showing it Willow would have laughed at Buffy the second she made that noise but she new it would just make her feel worst
"My name is Jack Kendale," he said offering Buffy his hand
"Buffy Summers, and I am really sorry!" she said again
"And this is Willow Rosenburg, and over there is Xander Harris and Cordelia Chase" she smiled sweetly and gestured at them as they finally got off their seats and joined them.
"Hi, I'm Angel" Willow saw Buffy lips make a round shape as she realised that she had left him out.
"Hi" they shook hands.

Buffy was embarrassed the guy she had whacked was a honey, a real honey, sure he wasn't a big broody guy like Angel but just looking at him made her heart flutter. His light brown hair was cut in a way that showed off his cheek

bones and he was tall, taller than Angel with big broad shoulders. She was so mesmerised by the guy that she forgot about Angel entirely and started flirting with him.
"You look a little old to be at the Bronze" she offered
"Really, you think," he smiled
"I'm going to start work here tomorrow, so I thought I'd, you no, check the place out"
"And?"
"I like it" he smiled at her, and she liked it, so she smiled back.

Angel was NOT happy. Buffy, his Buffy was flirting with another guy. Sure she had knocked him flying but that was no excuse. Angel was used to her talking and messing around with other guy sure sometimes she even flirted a bit to get something she wanted, but she never gave him any reason to think she meant any of it. Until now. It was the way she was looking at him and the way he was looking back. Buffy was gorgeous, she was blonde and had a beautiful figure, and that was what worried him. Other men found her attractive, other men tried to get her attention but she never paid them any, but this time she was paying attention and she was flirting because she wanted to, and she was having fun.
He couldn't help it, he walked forward and slipped his arm round her waist and stood side on next to her.
She jerked
"Oh, Angel, you made me jump" she said quickly.
Angel was not happy she was letting her guard down around him.
"So Angel what do you do?" It was a harmless question. "For a living I mean?"
Xander smiled and opened his mouth, Angel shot him a warning glance but as usual he paid no attention.
"For a living, oh I don't no a living hey Angel, what would that be?" he grinned foolishly
"I don't work," he said coldly, and Buffy sent him a look that said she didn't know what was going on with him but she didn't like it and he should stop it, now.
He slipped his hand from around her waist and went and stood behind Willow.
She didn't come after him.

Jack was in heaven, well not quite, but it was pretty close this young girl, Buffy, was lovely she was sweet and she was funny and she seemed to like him to. Bonus! The only problem was the large broody guy standing over her he sometimes had his arm around her but once she jerked he moved away and left her alone. Jack wasn't sure what was happening, there were mixed signals between them, they could just be very close brother and sister, but that was unlikely; there was a very big and visible age difference between them too, the guy, Angel, looked a lot older than him and at 22 that was saying something, Buffy looked about 18. He decided to ask her in a round about way.
"So are you a senior?" he asked gently
"I'm 17, if that is what you mean" she smiled and looked even more beautiful than before, he was becoming besotted with her.
"What about you?" she asked with a sly grin, he took a deep breath to stop himself rushing
"22" he said and smiled
"Oh" she smiled less brightly and he didn't like that, but then if she wasn't keen on him being 22 then the guy, Angel was out of the picture!
He guided her back over to the table she was sat at before, the others followed at a distance and sat around them.
"Um Buffy," Angel said, "I've really got to go its getting kind of early," he added
Off Jack's looks Buffy added on to that
"He has an early morning workout, has to get sleep" she smiled at him, yes!
Angel walked up between him and Buffy; Buffy stood and kissed him, on the lips.
No, No, No, No. There really was something going on between them and something big enough for them to kiss in public.
Buffy put her hand to Angel's face and said goodbye, their eyes locked for a second, but it was long enough for Jack to see the fondness and even love between them, but there was something else Jack saw in there eyes and he was pretty sure he new what it was.
Tension.
And a lot of it!
He could work with tension, Buffy was worth it. The guys at the house would love her, she had attitude.
He got her another drink and a buttery croissant the others left slowly one after the other till it was just he and Buffy left.
At 4:15 in the morning Buffy looked at her south park watch (sweet) and almost screamed.
"Its so late my mom will be worried sick, she'll be going crazy!" she started to panic
"You still live with your mom?" he grinned childishly at her
"Yes, I do" she frowned at him, not very happy
"I'm only 17 remember, how many 17 year olds do you know that live on their own" she was getting wound up. She was fiery.
"Look I'm sorry, I forgot you seem so grown up. I guess I started to think of you as someone of my age" he talked quickly
She paused took a deep, slow breath
"No I'm sorry I flew, I went over the top, and off the edge" she smiled and he was glad he was sat down
"Maybe we should go" he offered
"Yeah" she smiled
He loved it when she smiled it made his knees go weak; it was a nice feeling!
He thought about asking about Angel as she said,
"So working at the bronze I guess we'll be seeing a lot of each other then, me and the guys we come here a lot! Its fun and there is not really anywhere else to go" she smiled again he was glad he was sat down again.
She slid down from her stool as they prepared to leave and for the first time that evening he noticed what she was wearing; a little black top that dipped very low and made him catch his breath it was done up loosely at that back with three strings but still looked tight in the right places and her pants, black leather.
He brought his attention back to her lovely face
"Yeah I guess we will," he said lightly
"You and Angel seem ... together, yeah? It's just with the kissing, in public" he smiled briefly wishing he hadn't said it, he didn't think he wanted to know the answer. "Sorry, is that okay?"
"Of course it is. Yeah I guess we are" she smiled tightly
"You guess? What do you mean by that?" he looked puzzled and willed his mouth to shut.
"Its difficult, we went through a lot to be together and I guess it put a strain on things for us, and the kiss? Habit I guess" she smiled not her brightest but it still made him feel funny inside.
"I'll walk you home" he smiled, a full bright Jack smile that never failed with the girls.
"I can look after myself" she smiled "I'm a big girl" she smiled again slyly
"So" he said playfully âYou don't want me to walk you home?" he grinned
"I'll let you," she said graciously, then she shivered Jack passed her, her black leather jacket and after she had put it on he put his arm around her shoulder and gave it a squeeze, as he went to take his hand away her arm

came up and she put her hand on his and left it their till she was sure it wasn't going anywhere.
He smiled at her and she smiled back.

"Can you believe it, Buffy looking at another guy, I mean, WOW!" Willow's excited voice sounded down the line towards Xander. Oz sat on her bed and gave her an Oz smile
"I know isn't it great!" Xander's voice came back
"GREAT! What do you mean GREAT, how can you say that? It is not GREAT," she shouted down the line at him
"Okay Will stop shouting I get it already, just give me one reason why its not a good thing?" he calmed and then asked
"Her and Angel belong together, ... not together, together but you know together, and we know nothing about Jack, he could be bad and evil and something gross, its happened before okay not to Buffy and mainly to you and a little bit me" she turn to Oz, and he stuck his tongue out playfully at her "Not you you're good, ... most of the time that is" she grinned and giggled lightly, he smiled back
"Well okay so he could be something gross, but Angel isn't exactly a puppy is he?" Xander countered
"Not a puppy but he doesn't bite people anymore and he fights on the good side, and sure he's big and broody but that's not his fault, he thinks a lot, he's a clever guy" she rambled
"Will, your rambling" he said lightly but let out a small laugh.
"Willow, Honey its time for dinner is Oz finished in the bathroom and are you finished talking to Alexander yet?"
"Just a minute mom," she called out and smiled at Oz who had been sat on her bed all the way through listening to the conversation. And not in the bathroom.
"Xander I've got to go now okay," she said down the phone
"Yeah, sure see you at school tomorrow, Bye Oz"
"See ya"
Willow put the phone down and she and Oz went down stairs to face her parents for their once monthly dinner.

Angel sat by the fire his phone by his side; he glanced up at he clock. 4:52. Buffy should be in bed by now. Patrol would have finished, as all the vamps would be trying to find a place to hide them from the day. Angel didn't have that trouble he lived in a mansion, which he rented from the council under the name Mr. A. It had been Buffy's choice she found it funny, she was so young, but she had an age old heart, she had been through so much in her short life and she would have to go through so much more that she didn't even know about before it ended. He didn't know if Buffy knew it but slayers rarely reached the age of 22 and no slayer (that was still slaying) had ever reach 30. It was the things that most people took for granted that was so precious to her: a chance to go to a decent school, have real friends that she didn't put in danger, and a real boyfriend who she could have a real relationship with. He felt bad for her, but he never pitied her, she coped ... well most of the time, and she did her job better than any slayer he had ever heard of.
Buffy was everything to him, if she died he didn't think he could go on, he didn't think he would, but he would never tell her that.
He couldn't help it he had to ring her to make sure she was all right. He picked up the phone rang her bedroom number and waited
"Hello?" he heard her voice and was surprised by how awake she sounded
"Buffy, Hi, its me Angel" he said
"Oh Angel Hi, did you want something?" she sounded a little odd
"I just wanted to see if you were all right, you're all right, right?" he prodded
"I'm fine Angel, Jack walked me home, he didn't have to though, of course" he could almost hear her girlish grin "He's a lot like you, ... in some ways, did you get home all right?" she said but there was no concern in her voice because she knew he did
"Yeah fine" he said
"Jack starts work tomorrow so me and the guys are going to go give support, you want to come?" she gave him an out, was he going to take it, he didn't know
"After patrol right?" he stalled
"Yeah, of course `bout 24:30, okay?" she filled in
"Yeah, yeah, sure" he said grudgingly
"Okay, I've really got to go I think we woke up mom and that means fattening food and long chats" she said goodbye, and they hung up.
Angel stayed by the fire all night thinking about her.

School, thought Xander not the best place in world for the funny guy, but what choice did he have he'd missed so much of it from fighting the forces of darkness that he had to show up when he could. The first task of the day, check in, in the library with the guys.
As he walked in the first thing he heard was Buffy's voice, definitely not the worst thing in the world, but what she was saying was so much better. In an anti Angel way.
"Jack is so nice, I mean after you guys left we sat and talked for hours it was so nice to sit and talk to a guy you like with no other agenda but than to be your friend" she smiled or maybe it was more like beaming yeah that was it she was beaming
"Yeah right Buff, he wants you for your mind" he came in grinning and sat down in a chair next to her round the library table. She punched him, hard.
"Hey Buff, I was just joking" he gave her a goofy grin "No need to hit me that hard"
"It wasn't," she said straight-faced
He put on a scared face
"So what big evil are we fighting today" he said joke-lie
"The biggest" Buffy said still straight-faced and he was starting to wonder if he had missed something
"What? What is it?" he started to panic
"Math pop quiz followed double English" she said solemnly but her face was starting to crack into a grin. She giggled.
"I'm sorry Xand, there's nothing going on a..." she started but was interrupted by a high pitch giggle and the sound of solid shoes running through the room.
"Rupert, Uncle Rupert, where are you?" The voice sounded.
Uncle Rupert, Uncle Rupert. Giles was an Uncle; there were others of the Giles clan over there.
"Lucy?" Giles's voice called out from his office
"Rupert there you are I asked at the office and they said I'd find you here" Giles came out of his office and Lucy ran over to him and hugged him he hugged her back.
Giles sat her down at the top if the table. She was about 19 and she looked great, she was dressed in blue all over, she had on tight bark blue jeans and a little strap top. Xander liked it a lot!
"How long are you staying Lucy?" He asked; the introductions had been made and now came the questions.
"How ever long I can, I was hoping I could stay with you Rupert, ... just till I find a more permanent place" she said shyly.
"Yes of course, stay as long as you want to" he said
"So how is your job going?" she grinned Xander liked that to
"Nicely, thank you" he grinned back
"So Buffy," she turned to her "I hope my Uncle doesn't work you too hard"
Buffy's mouth hung open and everyone glanced from Buffy to Lucy to Giles
"She knows Buffy, being a watcher is the family job, Lucy is training to be one too"
Lucy smiled and Buffy started asking Giles a lot of questions
Xander paid his attention to Lucy
"So Lucy what year are you in at school?"
"I'm at Uni, studying English, Drama, Mythology and P.E"
"WOW are you some kind of genius? I mean WOW" he was amazed
"Thanks, I'm majoring in English Lit, the others I just do for fun" she smiled at him, he was getting the feeling that the Americans where right the English were all stuffy book lovers.
"So what part of England do you live in?"
"At the moment I live in Oxford because that is where I go to Uni"
"Oxford?" Xander was in shock now.

Willow had to stop herself laughing, Xander was going to go crazy this girl was pretty, very pretty, but she was clever too
"I'm applying to Oxford" she put in
"Really, cool" Lucy said turning her attention to Willow
Just then Oz walked in.
"Hi all" was all he said as he came up behind Willow and kissed her on the head
"Hi, Oz this is Lucy" she introduced
"Hi" was all he said
"She's Giles's Niece" she said happily
"Wow, that's nice" he said almost making an expression
"Monosyllabic huh?" she said making Xander blink hard
"Yep" Oz filled in
"Cool" she grinned at Willow
The bell rang everyoneood up said there goodbyes and left.

Lucy felt a little overwhelmed everyone was so nice, but it was Giles who she had come to see, she needed a break: from Uni from her Watcher studies from her family, Rupert was the only one who had ever understood her.
"So Unck" she said "What is Buffy really like?"
"She really is interesting! She is the bravest slayers I have ever heard of, she's dedicated and she's brave" he seemed to really mean it. Lucy smiled her uncle seemed happy.

And yet more pages

how long is this thing

more where???? This fic is awesome! I can't wait to read the next part!😉

It was 23:15 and Buffy and Willow were at the Bronze, Xander had to go some place with Cordy and they were meeting Angel at 24:30.
Buffy had insisted that Lucy come along to, she didn't complain and they had showed her around the town first. She was getting them drinks and complaining on how she couldn't buy alcohol. She was great fun, laughing and joking. She was wearing red this time in the form of a short red dress and that was all no top or coat.
Jack was getting off his shift in 5 minutes and was coming to join them straight after.
"Aren't you cold Lucy?" Buffy asked.
"Oh no way, its so warm" she said brightly, and Buffy remember she was from Britain, it was cold there.
Lucy handed out the two sodas for Buffy and Willow and sat down with a water for herself. They started gossiping about school and how different it was in England.
"Excuse me ladies, my I join you?" a voice said from behind them.
"Jack, hi! Come and sit with us!" Buffy said as she scooted up to make room for him next to her
"Jack, this is Lucy she's a friend of ours from England" she introduced them and they shook hands as he sat down next to her.
"So what are we going to do?" Jack asked them
"Well we're going to meet Angel here at 24:30, were um ... going out after" she looked knowingly at Willow who knew they were going on patrol. Jack looked at her and she felt bad but she didn't know why.
"He's helping me on a project" she said straight faced all seriousness.
"What kind of project?" he asked innocently, she faltered
"Um ... a secret one" she said and immediately feeling stupid
"Oh" he said looking down
"We can do something till he shows up though can't we?" Lucy asked
"Yeah, sure!" she said, "I don't see why not"
"So what then?" Willow spoke up.
They sat there for a while, no one could think of anything that they could do in Sunnydale limits
"We could sit at the bronze and be really bored!" Buffy said with a smile after about 5 minutes.
"Okay that is it. Buffy will you dance with me?" Jack said offering her his hand.
"Why thank you kind sir" they got up and moved to the dance floor.
Jack took her in his arms, he didn't hold her to close, but it was close enough that she caught her breath. They danced for a while and she felt good, better than she had in days, she moved in closer to him without thinking about it and she put her arms around him, he moved in closer to and put his arms further around her till they were dancing like a couple. The song finished and they stayed that way for a while, then Buffy remembered who she was with, and pushed back suddenly.
"I'm so, so sorry" she whispered
She looked up at him and he pressed his forehead against hers lightly.
"I know, I've just never felt like this, towards someone I've just meet, after all I do have a family-"
"Stop please" she whispered
"I'm sorry I can't, I like you so much" he couldn't help it.
He dipped his head, she new what was happening what was going to happen but she couldn't stop it. She didn't want to stop it. He kissed her, it was light to start with but he got stronger and stronger, she pushed him away.
"We can't. I can't" she said her voice was rasping.
He kissed her again, they moved away from the crowd. He stopped.
"I have to see you again" he pushed.
"Tomorrow, come to my house, after school, my mom will be out" she pushed him away and went to the bathroom to sort out her hair and makeup. She joined the others to find Jack already sat down with a drink in his hand
"Hi, I'm back" she said with a smile
"Jack told us," Lucy said
"Really! Jack you told them?" She said, so shocked, that she had to sit down
"Yeah, you had to go to the bathroom, no big" he said calmly and he smiled at her
"Oh yeah!" she said a bit to loudly and smiled.
It was 23:10 and they were all in a good mood.
"Hi Buffy, Willow" said a familiar voice "Jack," it said tightly
"Uh Angel hi, you're early" Buffy said she knew she was acting strangely she could hear her voice shoot up and down
"Yep, I guess I am, is that a problem?" he asked
"No not at all" she squeaked
"This is Lucy, Lucy Giles, Angel" Willow introduced this time
"Lucy, so your what? Giles's niece?"
"Yeah, Angel huh, sounds familiar," she said innocently not knowing she had probably read about him in her studies to be a watcher
"Angel, Lucy studying to be like Giles, there going to be in the same job" she said trying to get it through that she was going to be a watcher.
"Oh, okay" he got it straight away. He looked straight at her right in the eyes she knew he knew there was something wrong or rather just not right.
"Are we going?" he said
"Yeah, bye guys, see you all tomorrow. Nice to meet you Lucy" she smiled and waved as they turned to go, Angel took her arm and guided her out of the Bronze.
"So where shall we start?" She asked him.

Angel knew there was something going on with her and Jack but there was nothing he could to do about, in fact he didn't think he wanted to, he didn't want to keep Buffy from something she thought was right for her. He would let it take its course, he didn't want Buffy to leave him but he didn't want to stop her having a normal life. He led her out of the Bronze and she asked him where to start.
"I think maybe a cemetery," he said lightly
"Yeah but which one?" she grinned, he knew something was wrong because she was being so cheerful
"The closest" he suggested
They walked in silence for a while then without warning she slipped her arm through his and rested her head on his arm.
"Are you okay?" he asked
"Yeah I'm fine, just a little tired I guess" she yawned and snuggled in tighter around his arm
"You want to go home?" he asked,
"No I'm fine," she insisted
"Look go home, I'll finish the patrol later" he turned her around and guided her in the direction of her house
"Yeah, maybe that is a good idea" she yawned again.
They walked in silence again for a while till they got to her house; he walked her round to the side and helped her up the tree and along the roof to her open bedroom window. Her mother knew that she was the slayer and that she had to come and go at all hours but Buffy still didn't like to interrupt her. He followed her up, he knew he shouldn't be he couldn't help it, she climbed through her bedroom window, he stopped there and waited, then he swung his legs over and sat on her window sill. She went into the bathroom and came out 5 minutes lter dressed in a little strappy top and little shorts both light blue velvet. She looked beautiful even in her night clothes, she walked over to him slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him, he kissed her back then stopped himself pushed her back lightly.
"Buffy, wait. We have to sort everything out first" it took so much to stop himself kissing her again. She bent her head and rested her forehead on his chest, he heard her sigh

my friends Li has asked for more so...

"I'm so, so, sorry, I have to work it out don't I" he could feel her shake and heard her choke back a small sob. He put his arms around her and just held while she sorted herself out
"Okay," she said quietly and pushed away from him.
"You're sure?" he pushed
"Yeah I'm sure" she sighed deeply "I never want to hurt you".
He knew she meant it he could see it in her eyes.
He left her window and went back to his mansion, where he waited by the fireplace till the sun came up.

The morning burned bright and cheerful, the steps up to the front of the school were filled with student and a scattering of teachers. Several students lazed on the grass by the entrance, whilst others stood and talked: about last night, boys, girls, lessons and homework.
Buffy was not in the mood for the joys of being young, free and American; she had stuff to sort out. Like the whole thing with Jack, she had to admit she was attracted to him, but what about Angel?
"Hey Buffy!" Willow's cheery voice came up behind her
She slowed so they could walk together.
"Hey" she said less brightly than Willow
"What's up? Nothing bad I hope?" Willow's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, she couldn't help the giggle that escaped her lips
"What?" Willow asked a little hurt
"Oh it's nothing. Look we have to talk later"
"Okay. Are you heading to the library?" she asked
"Where else" she grinned.

Xander was not a morning person as a rule, but today he had made an effort, because today he was at school before Buffy, Willow and even Giles, because today he was going to study and work and pass another exam. He had been sat in the library, at the large study desk, for nearly an hour before Giles arrived.
"Xander, what on earth are you doing here? At this hour?" he sounded beyond shocked
"Studying" he said simply
"But, ... at school, ... and studying, ... you?" he gapped
"Yeah!" he stayed calm
"Oh" Giles calmed himself down "Okay, ... right".
It wasn't for another 30 minutes that Buffy and Willow walked in laughing at something, he didn't really care about
"Xander!?!" Buffy was the first to sound her surprise but Willow wasn't far behind
"What are you doing here so early?" she asked
"He's studying" Giles came out of his office right behind Buffy and Willow making Willow jump, but not Buffy as she probably knew he was there since she entered the room.
"Studying? ... really Xander?" she pushed
"Yep" was all he said in reply
He wasn't shocked that they were acting this way, after all he wasn't known for his studying prowess. Still shocked Buffy and Willow sat down Willow on a Chair and Buffy on the table right next to him his concentration was momentarily diverted by the length of Buffy skirt, but it went quickly back to the book in front of him.
"So Buffy" he heard Giles say "Did you patrol last night?"
"Nope" she said simply
"No?" he frowned
"Angel did it. I was tired, he told me to go home and that he'd do it"
"Oh okay" he was not happy about it.
"Hey" a familiar voice came from the library doors followed quickly by "Xander?"
"Hey and yep" Willow answered for him
"Hey, Oz" Buffy smiled at him
He walked through the library kissed Willow on the head and sat down next to her. Xander felt a slight pang go through him but he pushed it aside, Willow was happy with Oz, and he was less than happy with Cordelia, speak of the devil he smirked.
"Hello," she strode forward not waiting for anyone to answer she walked straight at him stopped maybe a foot away, hands on hips.
"Okay" he said with a sigh "What'd I do this time?"
"Nothing," she said with a careful smile "That's the thing" she was getting mad "You were supposed to ring me last night to discuss what you're going to wear at the Bronze tonight" she finished obviously furious, Buffy and Willow exchanged a glance that said a thousand words.
"I'm not going," he said simply
She let her mouth fall open; he went back to his book but she wasn't helping
"You're' what?" she nearly screeched
"I'm not going, I have to study" he said
"Study? ... Study? ... Study? ... You?" she said, calming down with each word
"Yep" was all he said again
"Oh" she was fully calm now, then she remembered something "But we had a date" her voice raised again, she was furious again.
"Cordy be quiet I'm trying to study" he said quietly, she gasped.

Willow was as surprised as any of them that Xander had turned into the study king, but she thought she understood Xander's A+ was enough to make anyone want to try hard and get another one, its just Xander was trying a little to hard, he was paying no attention to anyone it was almost rude!
"So Xander" she tried "What are you studying for?" she asked
He glanced up at her but only for a second, then he went back to his books.
"Math" he said
"Oh, ... do you want any help?" she offered kindly
"No" he said, off Buffy's looks "Thank you" he smiled tightly

Giles witnessed their exchange with an odd look on his face it wasn't like Xander to take such an interest in his schoolwork; he was usually fine with his D's and occasional C's and thrilled with his very rare B, but maybe he wasn't cut out for academic excellence, and after all an A+ was a rare treat for most people, he was just going over the top.
He changed his course of thought pretty quickly, back to Buffy and her training.
"So Buffy," he started "You will be training tonight, after school right?"
"Yeah sure" she started "No, no, no, no" she said very quickly, Giles was confused
"You're not coming?" he asked, confused as always
"No" she said, she looked relieved, and he wanted to know why
"Why?" he said innocently
"Um..." she stalled "I have work to do so I'm going to go straight home, to do it" she lied, he knew she was lying because whenever she did it she touched her hair just behind her ear.
"Oh" he said quietly enough so only she could hear, he'd get it out of her when she was ready and no before. The bell rang and everyone shuffled out of the library leaving him on his own, he moved to the in shelf, nothing, he went into his office, picked up an old watcher diary made him self a cup of tea and sat down and read.

The day passed so slowly, but it passed, she didn't go into the library, she just went straight home. She opened the door.
"Mom you home?" she called quietly. Nothing. Good.
She waited for half an hour and then there was a gentle knock on the door.
"Jack?" she grinned thinking about him
"Hello" he smiled at her as she opened the door "How are you?" but he didn't let her answer, he bent down and kissed her lightly on the lips, she pulled back gently.
"Wait" she said
"Wait?" he echoed, a little surprised
"We need to talk," she said smiling gently
"Talk?" he echoed her again
"I'm sorry, it's just..." she didn't know how to finish
"Talking?" he suggested
"Yeah" she smiled, this was going better than she thought. Not. "You want some juice or something?"
"Sure"
She took him in to their kitchen he sat down at the breakfast bar, and she got them juice from a carton in the fridge. She sat down opposite him and pushed across his juice.
"I'm confused," she said honestly
"About what? I mean we like each other, you can't tell me we are not attracted, so what is there to be confused about?" he said a little too loudly for comfort.
"Hey calm down!" she said a little put off "I was just saying I don't know you or if we are a good match! And I'm still kind of involved with someone" she took a deep breath "Is that okay?" she bit down on her tongue wishing she hadn't said that "I'm sorry" she put her head on the table. His hand moved towards her and stroked her hair.
"No I'm sorry" he paused "Involved?" he asked, sounding unsure if he wanted to know the answer
She lifted her head up
"Yeah, I guess, were in love... I mean..." she stuttered "We love each other" she paused again "It's really complicated!" she said, sighed and realised how tired she was.
"Love? Really? Wow!" he sounded very shocked. Argh!.
"What?" she sounded defensive and she knew it.
"It's just you seem a little young to be in love." he said gently
"Oh... you've never been in love before?" there was more behind that question than she want to admit
"Never" the answer was not what she wanted to hear.
"I believe you only ever fall in love once" he smiled.
She lifted her head right up, leaned across and kissed him; she pulled back to see his surprised face. She smiled at him and said
"You better go. Oh and Jack, I'm going to have to think about it, okay?"
"Of course" he smiled got up and left leave her sat there to think about what had just happened, it wasn't anything she could describe as a one off now, it was something she wanted something she planned and something she was sure would happen again.

Willow knew something wasn't right, so the second she got home she rang Buffy.
"Look Buffy share, okay?" she said the second she knew it was her who had picked up the phone not her mom. Buffy told her to come round that they had to talk. So Willow got her things together and lef house, she arrived at Buffy's six minutes later, Buffy let her in and they went into the kitchen she sat down and Buffy poured her a drink, she noticed the two glasses already there, one was Buffy's she was sure she knew who the other one belonged to but she wanted Buffy to tell her.
"Jack" was all she said
"Was here drank half a glass of O.J and left?" Willow said not sounding very convinced.
"We are kind of..." she paused searching for the right word, which Willow filled in.
"Involved?" she prompted. Her conversation with Jack came back to her.
"Yeah" she sighed heavily, Willow thought she looked so tired and so grown up she had been through so much in her life things normal people didn't even think could happen and she was still only 17.

"What about Angel?" she had to ask even though she felt really bad about it. She heard Buffy breath in deeply, trying to calm herself, she looked right at Willow, straight in the eye and said
"I... I don't know what to do Will" she put her head down on the table her shoulders started to shake, Willow got up went round the table and put her arms around her. Willow felt so bad for Buffy, Angel meant so much to her, she had been through so much to keep him and now she was doubting herself all over again. But the difference this time was that she had at least some control, she could decide. Angel or Jack.
But it wasn't that easy.

"Buffy?" a voice called from the Hall "Are you in?"
"Mom. Is that you?" a stupid question "What are you doing home so early?" Her mom came into the Kitchen where Buffy still sat, Willow had left an hour ago but she hadn't moved an inch. She knew her eyes were all puffy and red but she couldn't do anything about it now

"Well the office was so busy I didn't get lunch so I thought I'd..." she stopped.
"Buffy what's the matter?" she rushed over to her daughter. Buffy didn't know what to tell her, the truth? No that was not something her mom should know, boys, they stayed clear of that subject, her mom didn't get how she could love Angel.
Angel, it always came back to him.
"Buffy?" her mom asked again
"Nothing fatal" she said, sniffed dragged the back of her hand over her eyes
"Buffy!" her mom sounded tired.
"Personal stuff mom nothing to do with work" she didn't want to play that card but it was better than telling the truth
"Oh. Okay. Have you eaten?" she changed the subject and Buffy was relieved.
"No not really" thinking about it Buffy found she was actually very hungry
"I'll ring for Pizza" her mom walked to the phone before she got there she turned around "And Buffy," she said "I'm still your mom remember that" she smiled took the phone and went into the sitting room to order.
Buffy smiled too. She loved her mom but she knew she didn't show or tell her as much as she should have. Her mom had to put up with so much, Buffy had to put her life on the line every night, but her mom had to stay at home knowing her only daughter may never come home and there was nothing she could do about it, she just had to sit there. She would never know how hard that was.

Jack was feeling good! Buffy was amazing: she was beautiful, she was smart and she liked him. The problem was she was in love with another guy. Angel: big, handsome, dark, broody and older, he looked mid to late 20ties, he was a lot older than Buffy, he could sense the link between them.
"Hey, Jack" Brian, his best friend called out as he entered the house he shared with five other people "Have fun?" he winked
"Leave it Bri okay" he said coldly
"What, new girl not as great as you thought?" he grinned, sometimes he just wanted to thump him.
"Buffy, is fine thanks, and I'm going to see her again, if that's what you mean" he said anyway.
"Look when are we going to meet this girl? Man it's been what two, three maybe more days and we still haven't met her, god, are you ashamed of her or something?" he teased
"If you had ever seen Buffy you would know I "˜m not ashamed of her. Man she is a major babe!" he was getting carried away "I know, lets throw a party I'll invite Buffy then everyone can meet her. Okay?" he said with a smile, no way Brian was going turn down the idea of a party.
"You're on!" Brian grinned, Jack knew him too well
Jack smiled Buffy would be his he knew it and Brian would be so jealous he'd never get over it, well nearly never. He walked to his room still smiling, he'd win Buffy over make her forget Angel, the guys would love her, they'd all see. He sat on his bed turned the TV on and cranked up the volume.

Lucy knew they did things quite differently in America but this was just surreal everything was so extreme people were either really nice or very rude, there was a huge selection of everything everywhere she went. Her Uncle Rupert was only a little different though: of course he had a better tan but he also seemed more confident. Buffy was a great girl she seemed to care about her Uncle; they seemed to be friends. Lucy knew that the Watchers council didn't like the way Rupert trained and looked after the slayer, but Lucy understood. The watchers council were a bunch of stuffy old men who had know idea about the real world, that fact was no secret. Buffy was a modern day slayer she had to cope with the normal life of a teenage girl in The U.S of A, she had to put up with everything normal girls put up with - which is bad enough "“ by day and then face losing her life, by night, it didn't sound like Lucy's idea of fun. Lucy sat up in bed, Rupert had given her his and he was sleeping on the couch, it was only 22:05 but she was tired, very tired, but she couldn't sleep. She padded down stairs very quietly, into the Kitchen she opened the fridge took out the carton of juice took a glass from a cupboard poured and took a sip, cold, good, she shut the door turned, and for the first time noticed that Rupert wasn't there.
"Rupert?" she called out gently
No one answered.
"Uncle?" she called out again
Still no one answered.
She was worried about him she knew she shouldn't be he could look after himself, he'd been living over here for years now, but she still couldn't help thinking of him just as Uncle Rupert, the slightly clumsy but very kind older favourite Uncle. She sat down on his sofa pulled his bed sheets up around her and waited.
Half an hour later she fell asleep so tired she couldn't keep her eyes open any more. She didn't hear her Uncle come in that night because he was at school all night.

Rupert Giles placed the large leather book on the counter, it was just after one and the only thing keeping him awake was the six black coffees he had drunken since he had arrived at 21:35, he had gone for a long walk at 6:00 and had only been back for 15 minutes. Number seven sloshed on his hand
"Darn" he said under his breath, he moved in to his office to wipe it off.
"Giles? Are you in here?" he recognised the voice straight away and was disappointed... well maybe not disappointed, no wait... yeah!
Xander pushed right through the library's double doors
"Is Buffy here? I've looked everywhere" he paused as Giles came out of his office "Well okay not everywhere, but I thought where would Buffy be? And library, Pop. Right in my head. But I guess who would be in a High School Library at this time" he grinned
Giles glared at him.
"Oh yeah" he smiled. The library doors swung open again; this time it was more of a relief
"Hello everyone... oh actually everyone... oh what are you all doing here?" Willow smiled brightly at first but it dimmed as she realised that there were actually people here, he guessed that she was here to do some work in the quiet.
"No Buffy" Xander said "Do you know were she is?" he asked as if it were a great big secret
"Home" she said simply
"Home?" he echoed
"Yep. Her mom was gonna cook and then they were going to watch a girlie film". Giles made a concerned face "Oh don't worry she said she would patrol later, with Angel"
Giles's face fell further. Angel. He did not approve and he showed it, Angel had hurt him so much.
"Hello, I'm not going to be here long I just want to pick up Xander" Cordelia entered just a bit, hanging by the door, not feeling comfortable.
"Cordy you were looking for me?" he sounded surprised
"Duh. Of course you are my only...boyfriend" she almost whispered the last word.
"Cordy they know, remember" he said gently but with a slightly patronisingly, she glared at him.
"Believe me I know" she frowned "Are you coming?" she tapped her foot on the tile floor. He glanced at Giles then Willow.
"I am I needed?" he looked apologetic
"I don't think so," Giles said
Willow looked confused.
"So what are you doing here Giles?" she asked
"Research." he saw there strange looks " I like to keep up, missing something could mean the end of the world you know" he lifted his chin
"We know Giles it's just its been so quiet lately its hard to imagine" Willow explained "We know what could happen... and has happened that's why we're all so careful but maybe, just maybe the Hellmouth has given up, after all Buffy has kicked the butt of every beasty its thrown up and out, maybe be its given up, packed up and left town" Willow was getting into this "It could happen, I mean how much do we actually know about the Hellmouth? Huh? Maybe it's just run out of icky monsters. Or something." she stop as she noticed the looks she was getting "What?" she sounded defensive
"Its just you've got a huge case of wishful thinking there Will" Xander said gently.
"I know but it could happen." She stopped turned to look at Giles "Couldn't it?" she looked so little and innocent.
Giles thought about lying to her just to keep up their spirits, but could he really get their hopes up and then see them shattered when the next evil popped up. No.
"I'm sorry Willow I don't think that's going to happen. I know I can't be sure, but there would have been portents, some sort of clue" he was getting lost in his thoughts again "Possibly an earthquake"
Cordelia was getting bored.
â we gonna go? Or shall we stand around here all day and listen to Giles talk a load of rubbish. No offence" she turned and smiled insincerely
"Of course not" he smiled a little tightly
"Sure. Well are you coming?" She was getting grouchy
"Yeah why not. Bye guys." they walked out of the library, and it fell quiet.
"Um... well I'm going to go to I have homework. Bye." She turned and walked out, the library was silent, Giles picked up his book and stared reading again.

and more

Buffy was getting ready to go on patrol. It was just past midnight, she pulled on her trusty Black leather pants, big clumpy boots and a black top that said "˜kick' in silver letters on the front, she had bought it at the mall the week before, she had picked it out especially, why? To drive Angel crazy, it was tight and daringly cut; her mom had stared at it for ages because she still thought Buffy was her little girl. But now the thought of wearing it in front of Angel and making him crazy was not as appealing, their future together was not clear at the moment, she was hoping that tonight would help clear it up. She would rather not go but they had organised it awhile ago and Giles always preferred when she went on patrol with someone. She slipped quietly down the stairs and out the door. The walk to Angel's house was not that far for her and the cool air would help clear her head. She hoped.
She arrived five minutes later and knocked on the door, that in itself was strange she had never knocked before not even when Angel had first moved there.
"Yes?" Angel's voice came from the lounge "Oh Buffy its you" he opened the door "Come in"
She stepped in, he moved away from her letting her get into the house more. There was no kiss not even a hug it felt so strange for them to be so distant, after all even when Angel had first showed himself to her in Sunnydale they had been attracted, in a different way to the way there were now.
She still noticed what he was wearing though, well it was pretty hard not to: a bathroom towel and a large grey jumper that he must have slipped on before he opened the door.
"Um... I was thinking clothes, but if you want to try and patrol in that go ahead" she smiled but it was slightly strained and a little fake. He glanced down at what he had on as if just realising.
"Oh yeah... um... I'll just go and get changed." he turned and walked out the room in to the mass of corridors and darkened rooms "I was just in the shower" she heard drift back.
She sat on one of his sofas; a fire burnt it's last in the grill.

Angel pulled on his clothes. He loved Buffy and hated the thought that she was troubled but this time there was nothing he could do to help her.
Jack. That was the guy's name, he was trouble for them. He was at collage, he even had a car, and Buffy found it exciting this older guy was interested in her. Angel was older than her but it stopped showing after a while they knew each other so well, sometimes they even knew what the other was thinking or was about to say. But today was different, she was different, and it wasn't a good different.
He walked back into the lounge wearing black leather pants a black sweater and thick black boots, he noticed that they had picked out almost identical outfits: black. Her clothes were delicate but they didn't take away from her power, everything thing about her was confident: the way she dressed the way she walked, talked even sat. She really was beautiful: tight black pants and a very tight "˜kick' top also black, hair done up in a simple ponytail. He wondered if she knew he always noticed the way she looked, what she was wearing how she had done her hair. He dragged his thoughts back. Patrol.
"Shall we go?" he asked. She didn't answer. "Buffy?" She still didn't look up, he walked up to her, she was curled up on his sofa, Asleep.
She looked so young and innocent, he reach down and pushed a stand of hair away from her face. She stirred just a little; she opened her eyes and smiled. This was the image he had dreamed of a thousand times, but it didn't feel right, he couldn't explain it, even to himself, it was wrong. The one thing he did know was that it wasn't him, what ever was going on, Buffy was the reason. He broke the mood.
"Are we going to patrol?" Her smile disappeared
"Yeah" she sat up, pushed some strands of hair behind her ears "We'd better" she smiled and stood up slowly.
They walked to his front door together he took his duster from the stand opened the door and let her go first.
"Hammersmith?" he asked
"Yep" she smiled "Let's go save some drunks" she said more quietly, it surprised him that was not her usual attitude, he let it go though.
They walked in silence till they got to Hammersmith Park, the gates were shut but they knew the ways in: there were several places around the chain link fence that were broken at either the top or the bottom, they preferred a more athletic approach. From a standstill Buffy launched herself in to the air her hands caught the top bar and pushed off she landed ten feet away on her feet facing the same way, Angel landed right next to her seconds later, they walked on. It was less than a minute before they found their first Vampire: young, female and very thin.
"Wow, skinny" Buffy was in awe "Before you leave" she smiled " Can you tell me what is your secret?"
The vampire lunged, Buffy knelt whipped a stake out from her belt, as the vampire sailed towards her she thrust it out impaling the vampire. In the stomach.
"Oops" she cringed.
She pulled out the stake; the vampire put her hand to her stomach
"Look what you did to me" she screeched
"I said oops didn't I what more do you want?" Buffy whined
"Buffy" Angel said exasperated
"Cause come on, I was try to kill you if the worst I did was puncture your stomach I'd be thankful" she wouldn't let it go
"Buffy!â Angel said loudly so Buffy stopped "Are we going to stand around here all night or shall we kill this one and move on?" He sounded like an annoyed teacher
