Setting: The Bronze
Time: Directly following the WB's cancellation of ATS......
The stench of stale beer and smoke filled my lungs as I entered the building. The Bronze had been long since closed down, but some smells are eternal. I stood in the dark, reminiscing my past. This used to be my playground. My safe haven. Now, not unlike everything else in my life, it was gone. The stage no longer occupied the furthest wall, and the bar had been stripped. That's all that remained was a broken, tattered mirror ball.
I clenched my fists and studied the shadows. He was here. The letter said he would be. I fought tears as I looked back on the past few hours. I found the mound of ashes that was once Angel, at the foot of my bed, upon returning home that evening. Thats all that remained was the ring, and the letter written in blood. There was no signature, just a meeting place. Whom or whatever killed him, wanted to make sure they had their chance at me as well. I was ready. With tears in my eyes, and my heart beating like a thousand horses, I screamed to the darkness,"Show yourself coward! It's time to meet your maker!"
From behind me there came a sinister chuckle."Speak for yourself, slayer." I spun hastily and reached for my stake. The voice hardly sounded familiar, and was low and broken. Like he had gargled with shattered glass. "C'mon Buffy, don't you want to see your mother?"
My hands began to tremble and my skin crawled,"Oh, and I suppouse next you're going to want to taunt me with talk of Angel. Go ahead. You're not going to break me."
Once again he laughed, but did not emerge from the shadows. "Oh, slayer, I'm going to do much more than that."
I snickered and lowered my stake,"So are we going to do this sometime this century, or are we going to throw stones all day?"
Silence. I went through demons in my mind. Was it the first? The mayor reincarnated? My thoughts ran wild. A few moments passed and finally he amerged. I couldn't stiffle a sarcstic snicker before it flew from my lips. It was a frog. A six foot, kelly green, rediculous looking frog in a tuxedo. Upon his head he wore a large, satin top hat. "Well if you plan on asking me to kiss you, buddy, the answer is no."
He didn't seem to appreciate my humor, as he pulled a knife from the inside of his jacket."Buffy, Buffy, Buffy....No sooner did I kill your prince, and you're already looking for another one. Sorry slayer, the show's over." At that moment he hurled the knife towards me, and I ducked to miss it. It pierced the wall behind me and splinters cascaded to the floor. I lunged into a summersault and kicked him in full force. He flew back several feet before meeting the pole behind him. The top hat tumbled from his head and rolled to my feet. I hastily approached him and swung, using my stake as leverage. Splitting, blood oozed from the wound. This intrigued me, along with the fact that his skin was much like my own. Not slimy, or cold. "Why?" I asked heatedly." Why did you kill Angel? To get at me?" I hit him again, harder than before.
He grabbed my shoulders firmly and pushed me. Using my distance as an opportunity to steady himself, he stood and swung. Landing a blow to my right temple his laugh bellowed throughout the room. " Women. You always think it's about you. You want to know why I killed Angel?" He danced as he talked. My head pounded and his words echoed in my ears. I tried to shake it off and focused on his footing. I tried a spin-kick, but missed him. I steadied myself and tried again, this time making full contact, and slinging him across the floor. " I asked you, didn't I?"
He once again gained his posture and eased his stance. Ever so slightly leaning forward to emphasize his words,"Because I could."
I felt an angry flush envelope me, and I raged."NO!" I lunged forward and wrestled him to the ground. I felt splinters pierce my skin as we rolled on the ground. His laugh haunted me. It was shrill, and evil. Deafning.
After fumbling around for a minute or two I finally gained control, and held him down. I looked into his empty black eyes before I raised my stake and whispered,"Whats the difference between an Angel, and a frog?" His eyes grew wide with terror and, he struggled to break free. I smiled as i swiftly peirced his chest with the stake, using all of my strength. I ran it deep until it was no longer visible and watched his blood wash over him. I leaned forward and whispered softly, making sure to emphasize my words." Frogs are easier forgotten."
