7.2 - BENEATH YOU
Buffy and her friends come to the aid of a woman being pursed by a gigantic worm-like creature"¦only to learn that it's appearance in Sunnydale is linked to Anya.
In Frankfurt, Germany, two robed figures chase a punk girl through deserted streets. The girl seizes a brief opportunity and sends one figure smashing into another. Moments later, one of the figures trips the girl. When she falls, the figures pull ceremonial daggers out of their robes and stab her to death. As the girl dies, a deep voice comes from her mouth: "From beneath you, it devours." Inside her bedroom, Buffy awakens from her nightmare. She tells Dawn she saw the girl in her dream, and repeats the words the girl spoke before she died.
Meanwhile, in another part of town, something big burrows its way beneath the streets of Sunnydale. Buffy drives Dawn to school to being her first day as a part-time guidance counselor. Still somewhat skeptical about why she was hired, Buffy asks Principal Wood for an explanation. Wood tells her the students need someone who understands them. A short time later, Buffy heads to the basement to look for Spike. But she finds Spike's living area empty.
Meanwhile, an attractive young woman named Nancy takes her shih-tzu dog for a walk. Something burrowing beneath the earth grabs the dog and, in turn, Nancy, whose hand is stuck in the plastic leash holder. Nancy gets a glimpse of the creature and turns and runs"¦bumping into Xander, who was walking down the street. Xander takes Nancy back to Buffy's place, where the gang listens to her tale. Spike interrupts the meeting and offers his help in battling whatever evil it is the group is facing. Buffy pulls Spike aside so they can speak in private. Spike tells her something big and evil is brewing, but he isn't sure what it is. He again offers his assistance"¦and tells Buffy the ball is in her court.
In England, Willow, who's preparing to return to Sunnydale, tells Giles about her fears about the Hellmouth, and the homicidal tendencies that surfaced when Tara died. Giles believes that what she's really afraid of is being rejected by her friends. Giles tells her that although she may not be wanted, she will be needed. Buffy tells the gang they'll split up into two pairs. She instructs Xander to escort Nancy home. Before he leaves, Xander tells Buffy that he's apprehensive about Spike, given that he tried to rape her. Buffy assures Xander she can take care of herself. Meanwhile, Dawn warns Spike that if anything happens to Buffy, she'll set him on fire while he sleeps.
Xander, Buffy, Spike and Nancy make their way to the Bronze, where Anya is performing vengeance spells for unwitting mortals. When queried, Anya admits that she turned Nancy's ex-boyfriend into a giant worm. But Spike counters that the creature is really a worm-like Sluggoth Demon. As Spike speaks, Anya's jaw drops. She attempts to quiz Spike about his new look, but before she can get the words out, Spike pummels her with his fists. Buffy pulls Spike back"¦and sees that he's now in full vamp face. Spike and Buffy then battle it out. But the fight ends when Xander realizes Nancy ran off. Buffy and Spike head out to find Nancy, who is targeted yet again by the rampaging worm.
Meanwhile, back at the Bronze, Xander asks Anya to reverse the spell. Anya tells him it isn't an easy thing to do. As the giant worm prepares to feast on Nancy, Buffy swings into view on a telephone line and snatches Nancy out of harm's way before the creature can strike. Spike springs into action, using a pipe as a makeshift spear. Spikes thrusts the pipe forward, but just as he does so, Anya's reverse-spell kicks in and the worm transforms into Nancy's boyfriend, Ronny. It happens so quickly that Spike is unable to stop his momentum, and he runs Ronnie through. Spike screams as the behavior chip in his head causes pain to rip through him. A guilt-ridden Spike apologizes aloud for spearing the unconscious Ronnie. Spike then begins behaving erratically and runs off into the night. As Ronnie is rushed to a hospital, Buffy chases after Spike, who makes his way to a church. As Spike continues behaving as if he's being tortured from within, and makes his way to a stone crucifix, Buffy realizes the truth: Spike has a soul. As Spike embraces the cross, his flesh sizzling, he confirms this is true, telling Buffy that now he can be the kind of man she can fall in love with.
7.3 - SAME TIME, SAME PLACE
Willow's return to Sunnydale proves problematic when she is literally unable to see her friends, and visa versa"”and is inadvertently left behind with a creature that paralyzes its victims and flays them alive.
At 9:24, Buffy, Xander and Dawn show up at the Sunnydale airport, where they intend to greet Willow when she disembarks from her plane. Buffy informs her friends that Giles told her Willow left England without having officially finished her training, as he believes it's more important to reestablish relationships with her friends. When Willow fails to step off fthe plane, Buffy and the others wonder what happened to her. The airport clock again reads 9:24, and this time Willow does step off the plane"¦but she sees no signs of her friends. Inside a construction pit, a teenage boy spray paints graffiti on a plywood wall. A creature we will come to know as Gnarl attacks and kills him. Willow returns to Buffy's house. She calls out to her friends, but no one seems to be around. At the same time, Buffy, Xander and Dawn return home from the airport, but even though they occupy the house at the same time as Willow, they cannot see or hear her. Nor can Willow see or hear them.
The next morning, Willow makes her way to the Magic Box, which has "condemned" signs on the front of the building. She finds Anya there, and unlike her experience with Buffy, Xander and Dawn, Willow is able to see and hear Anya. Anya briefs her about events that have transpired during her absence, including Spike's unhinged mental state and the fact that he now lives in the high school's basement. But Willow wonders why she hasn't bumped into her other friends. Later, Willow makes her way to the construction pit, where she finds the dead graffitist's skinless body. Simultaneously, Buffy, Xander and Dawn inspect the body"¦and begin to wonder if Willow is to blame. Willow makes her way to the school basement, where she speaks with Spike. But the manner in which Spike converses suggests he's gone completely mad, staring into thin air and saying things to others who arent' in the room. What Willow doesn't know is that Spike can see her and Buffy and her friends; but Willow is still unable to see Buffy, Xander and Dawn, and visa versa. Fearful that suspicion might fall on her, Willow returns to the Magic Box and enlists Anya's help in finding the killer.
They make their way to Anya's apartment, where, with the aid of a map and some magic powder, they pinpoint the location of a powerful demon, who resides in a cave at the base of a cliff. Despite suspicions that Willow is to blame for the death of the graffitist, Buffy and the others research the death"¦and find the existence of a demon called Gnarl, which paralyzes its victims then cuts off strips of their skin. It then laps up the victim's blood. Realizing that the culprit is likely covered with blood evidence, the group uses Spike as a de facto bloodhound, hoping his vampire senses will lead them to the killer. Spike makes his way through the woods, then stops at the base of a sheer rock cliff. At the same moment, Willow"”and Buffy, Xander and Dawn"”make their way into the cave.
Gnarl launches an attack, cutting Dawn's midsection with his powerful claw. She's instantly paralyzed. Buffy and Xander carry her body out of the cave, then seal it shut so Gnarl cannot escape. Unfortunately, they also unwittingly trap Willow inside. Buffy and Xander bring Dawn back home. After doing some research, they discover that the paralysis is permanent"¦or at least until the creature dies. Meanwhile, Willow discovers that Gnarl is immune to her magic. It isn't long before the creature paralyzes her"¦and begins stripping away pieces of her skin. Anya shows up at Buffy's house, and it soon becomes apparent that Willow made her way to the cave.

When Gnarl launches another attack, Anya tells Buffy to "get him in the eyes." Buffy buries her thumbs in the creature's eye sockets, killing him. Dawn and Willow are no longer paralyzed. The ground around Willow begins to shimmer"¦and the others are able to see her. She's brought back to Buffy's house, where Willow uses magic to regenerate her missing skin. Willow thinks she was inadvertently responsible for the mutual invisibility, having believed she wasn't ready to see her friends; that they wouldn't connect. Buffy reaches out and takes her friend's hand.
