I couldn't find the original thread, and this article gives us a little more info on the game we're all waiting for:
Can the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer be translated into an MMO game? Well there is one in development and you can find out a little bit more about it in this article.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire SlayerBuffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons and built up a devout fan base of millions. Creator Joss Whedon produced a horror themed show which was suitable for the whole family. Sarah Michelle Gellar became a star as the blonde teen with monster mashing skills and girls found a worthy heroine while the boys drooled. The series spawned a number of decent videogames which allowed players to play as Buffy in third person action and stake vamps to their heart's content. In September last year the news that a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMOG was in production got fans across the world sharpening their stakes in anticipation.

The production is backed by 20th Century Fox and the game is being developed by a company called the Multiverse Network. They were founded in 2004 as an MMOG middleware company. They provide an MMO engine to developers in return for a share of their eventual profit. The code is free to encourage uptake and development and they hope to build the platform into a standard base for a number of worlds. In 2006 they announced that they had acquired the rights to produce a Firefly MMO. It has been delayed as the team focus on Buffy and another title based on the Titanic.

The company have strong backing from the movie industry and director James Cameron has a position on their advisory board which explains the Titanic project. They also have Mike Sellers on the board. He created Meridian 59 which is generally credited as the first 3D MMO. With some talented development staff and several million dollars of capital raised the company has definite potential. You can check out some of the projects they are involved with on the Multiverse website.

The examples you'll see on the website are not what you would call graphically impressive and the approach to the Buffy MMO sounds unusual. They have stated that the game will be playable in a fully 3D environment and also as a Flash based 2D application. The 2D application will come first and will allow you to download a very small client and stream content once connected. You'll be able to chat with other players and embark on missions in the world of Buffy. The 3D game will follow and there are plans to allow the two to interact so people playing in 2D will be part of the same world as the players in 3D. Naturally the 3D version will feature some more depth and further options.

In terms of art style and game-play there is no news to report at the moment. An open beta is expected but there is no fixed date and the world of game development, especially MMO game development is frequently plagued by lengthy delays. They have shown off a few screenshots of Titanic but nothing on Buffy so far. Joss Whedon has no direct involvement in this project and to be honest I get the feeling it is largely a sales tool for the middleware engine they have developed. It certainly doesn't look like it will be a cutting edge release. With the dearth of horror themed MMO games currently out there it is sure to spark some interest and Buffy fans will be unable to resist.

I will be unable to resist that's for sure! I'm glad it sounds like it's going ahead.

I don't really know what a MMO game is, cause I'm not really into gaming.

Can anyone explain to the non-tech girl here what it means?

It's going to be kinda like World of Warcraft: a Multiplayer Online Game. 🙂 I can't wait for this game to come out, for real... I just hope they do it justice.

I've never played any Multiplayer online games, but it sounds like I would enjoy it if it was Buffy based. Hopefully they will come up with a good storyline for it. And I want to play as someone awesome! I hope they don't turn it into a Potential Slayer type of storyline. It would be much more fun if it was the scoobies and fang gang. I would be super happy if Wesley made an appearance!

I'm not into those games but i would play a Buffy one if they do it right...it should have all the characters even Angels..that would be good..let you pick from all the good and bad characters

Playing Glory or Hamilton would be fuuuun!
I've played a couple of MMO's, but I still have no idea how they're gonna do this. My guess is that you will be able to choose whether you want your character to be a slayer type, a sorcerer, witch, vampire, or maybe even a watcher. Kinda like separate classes. It sounds awesome though, and I'd definitely want to try it out, even the beta!

I'm a total game nerd here...but i can be honest here and say that i absolutely hate mmo's(i'm more of a shooter gal ;P) but i do think that this will probably fail. nevertheless, i will end up picking it up just to say i have it 🙂

I don't think it can really "fail" given what was quoted in the OP:

"to be honest I get the feeling it is largely a sales tool for the middleware engine they have developed"

Also, you're not going to be able to play any of the already established characters in the lore. You'll probably just be a freelance demon fighter or an awakened slayer or something.

Really?! awwwwww......

/me cries.

Are you sure?

I probably won't bother if that's the case.

Yeah the idea of a MMO is you create a character in that world, so you won't be taking on the role of Buffy or Willow etc, but you'll probably be able to choose a Slayer character or Witch character.

If you could be Buffy, you'd have hundreds of Buffy's running around the online universe it would be stupid.

Season 7 actually opened up an awesome world for this game, with awakening all the slayers and destroying Sunnydale it opened up the while world for the game.

Although I do think the Firefly 'Verse could have been a cooler one for an MMO.

And a Titanic MMO, WTF? That is the lamest thing I've ever heard!

Wow, this is so weird I woke up in the middle of the night wondering about the MMO...Totally off the point, so anyway...

I'm actually really excited for this to come out. I used to play WoW a lot, but I stopped, mostly because paying for it every month seemed pointless, especially considering I stopped playing very much - Does anyone have any idea if the Buffy MMO is something that'll need to be paid for monthly? I'd definitely buy it, but I might give up on it if it was going to cost me all the time.

I think I'll definitely buy it when it comes out, whether I get into it or not is a different story, I suppose. Is there any news of when it'll get released? I'm guessing it'll be next year, or the year after?

Mmm, never played a MMO before. This would be like The (online) Sims, no?
Also, do we know what systems? Or is this one of those 'computer only' kinda things?
I've always said that Chosen really left it open to a be a good mass multiplayer game sorta deal... buuuut what? A Buffy game with no Buffy? Obsurd! ...or Willow, Xander, Giles for that matter...

They would still have Buffy and all the other characters, but they would all be NPC's, not that it matters now that the MMO got canceled.

it got cancelled?? Where did you hear that?

I've decided that doesn't matter to me... I'd love to play a Slayer, whether an already established one or not. 😀

I've never played an MMO either, but I love the Guild, and it's always made me curious about them...and if they do a Buffy one, then there is no way I'll be able to resist playing!!

"Thecaitaintdead agrees: It did?
HisMrs agrees: it got cancelled?? Where did you hear that?"

Yeah, unfortunately I believe it has. I found this online...

"On September 3, 2008, Multiverse announced a MMO based in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe. As of February 19, 2010, the website for the game has been taken down from the developers site and there is no reason to believe that this game will ever be made."

That makes me so sad. 🙁 Maybe a different company will take it over and go ahead with it.
