Urgent virus help needed!

Ok so yesterday, i went on a site and a Norton pop-up came up twice saying it had found a downloader virus on my system but it couldn't repair it, everything was fine though except a few tabs opened themselves to show me some pop-ups. This morning when my mum used the laptop, she woke me up to show me she was getting several windows with several tabs opening themselves to show po-up, also the laptop was freezing alot and my automatic updates say they are turned off, and i can't turn them back on at all. I've done a system restore but the furthest back i could go was to yesterday, after i got the virus D=

Also, i've done a full system scan with Norton, and it can't find anything.

So...erm....HELP!?

Have you tried scanning the PC whilst the PC is in Safe Mode? Sometimes Norton will pick up stuff in Safe Mode that it can't whilst running normally.

I sometimes feel the ony safe way to fix a compromised PC is to format it & start again - something I do on a regular basis anyway, as I have 2 hard drives & only need to format the one. 😉

I'm assuming when you say that your automatic updates are switched off that you mean the Norton updates. If so, you could try manually updating Norton from their website and running the scan again.

You could also try scanning again with another virus checker in case it's one Norton can't find...rare but it has been heard of before. I used to use AVG in my pre-Mac days, which is free for home use.
AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista

You could also try running a spyware scan, in case it's that kind of nasty.
Adaware was a free one I used to use -

and Spybot S&D also has a good rep and is free-

If it's Windows Xp you have, then restart & repeatedly press the F8 key, you will then get a black screen & you will see 'Safe Mode' listed as an option. 🙂

No, the automatic updates are Window's, not Norton's

In that case (and I'm sorry it's a while since I've used Norton, so I don't remember the precise procedure) go into Norton and run its updater to make sure you've got the latest virus definition file...you may have to do this manually but I don't remember it being too tricky...then try another scan.
The thing I forgot to mention above if you decide to try another virus scanner is not to have two anti-virus progs running at the same time - I'm not sure exactly why but all the techy stuff I've seen says it is a bad thing.

Oh, the other thing I forgot above was to suggest that if pop-ups are a problem make sure that your pop-up blocker is enabled. You can find it in the IE tools menu, if that's your browser.
