This is to calmly and civilly discuss the current US election. This is NOT a thread to debate what President Trump has or has not already said/done. It's not a "we hate Trump" fan club.

I will close it if it does not remain civil.

I believe that Biden will win the Democratic nomination and that Trump will win the elections.

For the past 24 years there has been a tendency for presidents to get re-elected and to do two terms rather than one (Clinton, Bush and Obama come to mind), which is why I believe Trump will get re-elected.

I've not been following too closely but I'm getting deja vu already. Seems clear that the Democrats will rally behind another charisma free neoliberal and move heaven and earth to make sure people aren't given a chance to back Sanders.

If this happens the debates between Biden and Trump will likely be so incoherent that you'd have to laugh or cry or maybe both.

I guess the corona virus is a potential wildcard for shaking things up politically. No way of knowing yet how much damage it will cause and which way that might influence people's decision making.

I will close it if it does not remain civil.
I reckon we can get to at least the third page 😀

I bet page 2 :D
It's like on Groundhog Day, if the groundhog sees his shadow it's six more weeks of winter, Biden winning Super Tuesday means four more years of Trump.

Isn't anyone concerned about the ages of the candidates in the US?
Personally I wouldn't vote for anyone closing in to 80 for such a demanding job.

Even if they are alright today so isn't exactly unusual that things can deteriorate quite quickly at that age.

The 83+ year old men I work with feel you’re being ageist and the 84 year old wants to know when you last took a 3 week mountain hike to see gorillas in Africa 😋

I’ve thought about it too though, that most candidates seem very old by now, but then, that’s why you keep an eye on who’s VP

It really depends on the 80+ year old, I wonder how well off @white avenger will be by his 80's birthday.

As for VP's, Mike Pence is in his 60's and looks well for a 60 year old, but can anyone tell me who's Bernie Sanders' running mate ? He's even older than Trump...

If its Sanders I think he has a chance because there is a strong core of voters who believe in his vision. Biden has next to no chance probably. The irony of a President who wasn't that popluar in the first place winning two terms isn't lost on me. If Lisa Nandy is elected the new Labour leader the UK can at least feel smug about that one... What happened to all those bright young women from diverse, working class backgrounds running for the Office in the US?...

I don't see how you can say he wasn't popular; the red areas are the districts he won with, you know, the popular vote

As you can see, most of the people that voted, voted for him.

That's not true:

Trump - 62,984,828
Clinton - 65,853,514

I assume what was being alluded to was that his popularity ratings were awful but this was countered by Clintons being god awful.

You're right, I should have said most of the country.

Thanks!

Well, ol' WA is currently in the hospital, by strange coincidence (nothing serious, just a build up of CO2 in my lungs that has to be occasionally flushed out) but at 73, I'm looking at 84 as being younger and younger.

I can remember back in 2015 seeing a chart like that showing Clinton as the one winning y a landslide, so I ain't counting any chickens before they come home to roost. Clinton won the popular vote, yes. but the electoral vote, meaning a cross reference of the entire nation's population, supported Trump.

Still, Trump gets the credit for reestablishing an economy far stronger than Obama left it, so that should count for something, especially since just about all that the Democrats have to answer with is their constant and consistent lack of support, if not outright opposition, to everything that the President says or does.

Still, it's a turkey shoot, with the outcome still anyone's guess. We'll just have to sit around, wait, and hope for the best.

I'm so disgusted by the whole system. the only ones that give me any true hope are Bernie Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard & Andrew Yang. Yes Yang isn't technically running for president still but he is still working to achieve his goals as president; that's what makes him so admirable, he doesn't want to be president for the sake of the position & power, he truly just wants to improve the lives of everyday Americans. The same can be said for Bernie & Tulsi to different degrees.

I can just never figure out how a Socialist millionaire has any feasible "plan" that can improve the lives of any Americans, everyday or otherwise. There's no free ride, and all that Bernie plans is to take money away from the people who worked all their lives to earn it in order to give it away to people who haven't earned it. Socialism works great as long as the money lasts, but, with fewer and fewer people actually working to support more and more who aren't, society simply won't survive. We've seen it too many times in too many countries throughout the world.

Only tax "the upper 1%?" You are talking about the single group of people in the country who are capable of removing all of their assets from American soil, shutting down all of their factories and businesses, and setting up shop somewhere else, leaving literally hundreds of thousands of those "everyday people" in debt and unemployed.

There is no "free" education, and there is no "free" medical plan. The bills all come due, and the number of people actually supporting the system gradually, but definitely, diminishes, just as soon as someone asks the question, "Why should I work for something if it's going to e provided for free? Let some other jerk do the work while I sit here and watch reruns of 'Bonanza'."

Education is something to be valued and its investing for the future. You can argue that it shouldn't be free (depends on the system they put in place to fund it I guess). It should certainly be a lot more affordable than it is, and with greater excess for people from poorer or minority backgrounds. Education is one thing which shouldn't be turned into a capitalist venture.

If you get a choice it won't be between millionaire or not. Rather between millionaire with a conscience or not. That's the way the system is set up.

What's feasible is worth thinking about. The attitude of "let's all go down the Winchester until this blows over" towards climate change isn't feasible. Concentrating as much wealth into as few hands as possible while ploughing through every resource and damn the consequences isn't feasible.

No it's a choice people make to live in a society that values the health and well-being of it's citizens. Investment in people reaps rewards.

I agree with you. But there does have to be a proper plan in how to pull all this off. There's no point otherwise.
Will the Presidential debate go ahead as planned?
If the Covid-19 virus hits America hard it will be the eldery and the unhealthy who will get the worst of it.
All of the people in the election race are old, unfit and probably unhealthy.
Has anyone in America planned for a new load of politicians that might be needed?
