Vamp fingernails

Ok, so this is a very minor detail, but it might be fun and someone out there might be wondering as I am...what's the deal with Vamp fingernails?

It seems that early on they were black with white at the base...I mean it looked like polish, and I haven't gone back episode by episode and taken notes, but I recall noticing.

But then sometimes, in later seasons they are straight black, or occasionally appear vertically striped.

I mean, during those long boring daytime hours are they doing their nails? Is it just the vamp style? Or are we to believe it's "natural"?

anyway...just thought it might be fun to discuss something relatively pointless and mindless for a change. lol
 
Angel's finger nails have always been natural, if my memory serves.

Spike paints his black. We see him in the S5 episode 'Blood Ties' painting his nails when Buffy attacks him. He says 'These are wet' and holds up his hand.

As for everyone else, the only other vamps I've notcied with painted nails are females like Drusilla.
 
I've noticed that in season one the vamps seem to have long, jagged, discoloured nails. I'm not sure if they do in any of the other seasons...

Anyway, this is a pet peeve of mine in fanfic - that whenever Spike or Angel or one of our other "main" vampire characters go into vamp face, their nails change and become jagged and discoloured. I've seen it happen so many times in fic and it's like - where did this come from? I just assumed that the first season vamps with icky nails weren't very good at personal cleanliness 😀

That said, I've always liked how Drusilla did her nails - a vampiric twist on a French manicure. I've tried to recreate it but it always ends up looking stupid XD
 
In School Hard we can see that Spike has one white fingernail. I like to imagine Drusilla painting his nails and making a joke. ;_;

I never noticed vamp's nails tho. I guess it just depends on the vampire, I guess. Some like them natural, some like them all evil and dirty and some like them black ^^

And, Xaphania, I did notice Dru's nails. It looks really cool indeed.

Hmm. Well, I've noticed that Drusillas nails were black with white tips in whatever episode it is where she kills Kendra (Becoming part 1?)...and Spike's are often black.

I guess, what with being dead and all and not having jobs, they have quite a bit of time to paint their nails 😉
 
I've heard that Dru's were supposed to be black with the white tips when she was still weak, and then once she regained her power that's when she starts painting them red with white tips, altough I may have that backwards....


I think it's in one of the DVD commentaries somewhere, I'm not sure where exactly I heard that.....
 
Were Dru's nails ever red? I think I recall seeing that...
Oh! and i don't think the black nails are just a vamp thing! I think I remember seeing Oz with Black nails.

And the time thing - it sorta reminds me of when Darla and Drusilla went into Holland's wine cellar and I was thinking "when did she find the time to crimp her hair"

I agree with Cordelia, I think vamps are buying into the media
 
In the last few S7 episodes, I noticed Spike's nails are natural. He got his bad boy coat back, but didn't waste his time on nail painting in the face of apocolypse...guess his soul really DID change him. lol.
 
I think the vamps are just like humans; they can paint them any color they want. 😀
Back in high school, I wore a black dress to one of my Homecoming dances so I got my nails done like Dru's black-with-white-tips look and everyone raved over them. Of course, some folks did accuse me of trying to be goth, but I was like "Whatever; it's nail polish, dude."
