Is it just me or were the vamps a lot more scary in season 1? (Am re-watching "Angel" at the moment.)

& then that was that weird bit in the first couple of eps of Angel.

So, what was your favourite?

Do you prefer the vamps scary or cuddly?

I prefer tha vamps that are half and half. where they have the less scary makeup but are sitll viscous. i thought the vamps in season 1 where more like "sprinting zombies" especially in prophecy girl

Are you referring to S1 Angel? I think I read an interview a while back that said they experimented with new vampire prosthetic in the Angel pilot, but they went back to the Buffy design because they made Angel look too demonic in the pilot, and didn't think it was fitting for the new show's protagonist.

Series 1 Angel & Series 1 Buffy they're both different from the norm, but in different ways.

Series 1 Buffy = scary.
Series 1 Angel = just weird.

I guess having the main character of the show (in Angel) vamping out and having uber scary face every episode wouldn't be the bes thing.

Hmm.

I like the "bumpier" version, the scary one. The one Angelus & Spike had in season 2 of Buffy was just right. Angel in season 1 was weird. I guess it was because I was used to the old one, but it just looked... less hot.

I mean scary!

Nah, I mean hot.

I like normal vamp, like in Buffy season 3+. I think the pale vamps in Buffy s1-s2 is what is weird for me. But yeah, they're a lot more scary. I prefer less scary, more stupidity. 😉

I like scary with layer.
Like Angelus. Angelus gave me true nightmares, while Spike plays my dream protector 😛
I also really like Dracula. I think it's very cool they devoted an episode to that dude 😛
But it's true the demons/vamps get less scarier as the show proceeds.
One the one hand it's ok because it more diverse than just scary only, but they shouldnt get too cuddly.
A few of them is ok I think, but just not too much of it.

I hated the make up in Angel S1, it was so baaaaad, seriously.
Never thought twice about the Buffy ones though...

Anyone else who disliked when the vamp face wasn't the same color as the neck/chin/ears?

It's not that big a deal, I get that the make up people couldn't always know exactly how the light would work on the make up, but still.

some people have fifferent colored faces & necks ;)
I didn't really like the vamps of Buffy season 1, or season 1 of Angel actually. They were just so silly. And if we're talking vamp make-up then James Marsters looks the best, definitely. Although Angelus was my favourite vamp as a character, Spike really suited the make-up. 😀

Whoa, I think he looks so bad in S6. He has too many vamp flesh on the forehead. 😛

My fav definitely, Angel in Enemies.

I've got a question that I might as well post here instead of making a new thread.

How did they do the morphing? They do it a lot for vamping out, but also for, say, Glory/Ben or any other time a face changes. Hoooooooow? And for the dusting--the special effects can't be that complicated, and I have theories about what they did but I can never find anything absolute.

I'm guessing for the vamping out that they had the actor do a pre-vamp pose, then put the make up on, and tried to get into the same pose after the make up application? Then fudged around in editing to make the match better. Close?

And for the dusting... did they "stake" the person, then have Buffy or whoever freeze, have the vamp back away, then have Buffy unfreeze--then fudge around in the editing?

Some of the vamp makeup looked okay, it kinda bugs me that they couldn't make the teeth a little better so that the vamps didn't sound like, well, humans wearing fake vampire teeth. Spike's vamp makeup looked the best by far. Angel's always looked silly I thought, there are a few exceptions of course, but most of the time, Angels didn't work for me.

Oooh, also I loved Darlas vamp face, it looked scary and hot at the same time - just great.
