No judgment, but has anyone read the Vampire Academy? Because it's legit amazing! I hear that the movie is god-awful, so don't bother, but the series are great.

It's a total Bangel ripoff in many ways, but I like Rose Hathaway (the main character) more than I like Buffy. And Dimitri, the love interest who is a total cliché, is very crush worthy.

What I like about these books, besides the romance and how fun they are to read, are the little twists on romance novels that they have. Rose's most important relationships are to her best friend and her love interest, but the best friend is actually way more important in many ways. And Dimitri, despite being tall, dark and handsome, wears a long brown duster, listens to 80s music and reads western novels. He's a total dreamboat...who watches western cowboy movies... He has such interesting quirks that make him more lovable than the usual love interests in YA novels.

I seriously recommend reading the Vampire Academy if you haven't already.

For those who have though, thoughts?
 
Okay, I have to admit that sounds pretty horrible (but I don't think I am the demographic). But there are two things that interested me...
A- "He's a total dreamboat" made me giggle. That's just a funny word to hear nowadays.
2- " I like Rose Hathaway more than I like Buffy"

Why do you like her more than Buffy? Explain what you like better.

I loved both the series & the movie!
It was really intriguing to me.

Dude, you read Twilight and enjoyed it. Vampire Academy is a lot better. It's one of the least sexist YA novels I've ever read. I also haven't read a ton, but still...

I'm glad I made you giggle. It was supposed to sound a bit silly. Because Dimitri is a total cliché in many ways. He's Russian so his name is Dimitri... But plenty of books are all about clichés. It's what you do with them that matters. Dimitri is Rose's teacher/mentor. Rose and Dimitri are half-vampires, half-humans (dhampires) and their job is to protect the good vampires (like Rose's best friend). So Dimitri is an experienced Guardian (glorified body guard or soldier) and he's training Rose to help her become one.

Buffy whines more than Rose, for one. And Buffy's journey includes her saving the world, complaining about doing so, disgusting sex with Spike, becoming some weird, heartless robot in season 7, etc.

Rose's journey is different. First, she trains to become a Guardian and to protect her best friend. While she's at it, she also uncovers some secrets surrounding her best friend and her. You see, the good vampires (Moroi) have magic, but Lisa (Rose's best friend) has a type of magic that is unheard of. She has spirit magic and unknowingly brought Rose back from the dead when she was a child. So they're both in danger because of it (so much happens, I can't explain it all).

Rose is shadow-kissed because she can see the world of the dead and go inside the mind of her best friend. Rose is stubborn, feisty, smart, and a little dark. She doesn't wait around complaining about her life (although she does that sometimes). She always gets into the thick of things, she breaks rules a lot, she is energetic.

Buffy is kind of meh to me. She is a slayer because she was forced to be one, and then accepted that. But Buffy often only patrolled or killed vampires because of Giles. Rose, on the other hand, wanted to be a Guardian, and worked hard to be a great one. She didn't wait for trouble to find her. She was only trying to figure things out.

When Dimitri gets turned into a bad vampire (Strigoi) and loses his soul, like Angel, Rose's attitude is much different from Buffy's. Because she knows that Dimitri would want to be killed instead of going around killing people without a soul, Rose sets off on an adventure to find Dimitri and kill him herself. (That's also partly her job, as a Guardian). Along the way, Rose finds a way to get Dimitri back (not because of some fluke accident like Buffy finding Jenny's disk) and she tries her hardest to get him back. She succeeds.

Rose is just more active and she doesn't lose herself midway through the series. I find her a lot more enjoyable even if she can be bitchy, impatient and immature - like Buffy.

A skirt forced me to read twilight series. I wouldn't have read them on my own.

I read a little bit of the books & really like it . I thought the part where there good & bad Vampires was great .
Plus the Guardian thing. Was a nice twist on things 😀

The sex was lame and gross at times (sex at the Bronze, in a filthy building, next to a dumpster? Gross). What's really disgusting is her thing (relationship or whatever) with Spike: the fact that it was with a soulless vampire who would go back to killings humans given the chance, the fact that Spike is a misogynistic asshole, etc. If she'd had this kind of relationship with someone other than Spike, it would have been disgusting as well though.
 
I agree with you mostly. If it had been with someone else it would have been more disgusting since you expect that from Spike.
 
Oh my gosh, yes! I read the series years ago and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it -- particularly the first three books -- "Frostbite" was my favourite. I can't even remember why exactly anymore but I really did not like Dimitri... I think the first-person narrative was part of the reason and the glorification of him got to be a little much, if that makes sense? There were other reasons but it's been too long for me to remember. I do remember loving the Lissa/Rose and Christian/Rose friendships and liking Christian/Lissa and Rose/Adrian.

I still have to finish the "Bloodlines" series that centres around Sydney (the alchemist Rose encounters)
