Okay so I decided to start my own non-Buffy thread. Was just wondering how you guys feel about vampire diaries and true blood and which you prefer if any. Feel free to link the mythology of the two shows, if you know any of it to that of Buffy. so basically just discuss what you like or dont like about the two shows especially about their approach to vampires.
I've only watched one episode of Vampire Diaries, the pilot, and I stopped watching after that. I may go back to it if I ever need a vampire fix, but I'm in no hurry. It's cliched, very high school (which isn't really my style anymore) and just seems quite bland.
True Blood, on the other hand, I was hooked from the first episode. The first scene in fact made me think - this show is going to be awesome. Funny timing, I watched the most recent episode just today so I'm now up to date. The first season of True Blood is incredible, the mystery, the novelty of the whole vampire "coming out of the coffin" concept, the pacing, it was an incredible season in my opinion, on par with Buffy Season 5 (my favourite season).
Unfortunately, it's gone downhill since Season 1 in my opinion and is unlikely to be as good as it once was. Oh well 🙁. But still, because of the epic Season 1 I've watched the rest of the series quite quickly.
I agree with Yosso that Vampire Diaries starts kinda weak but I got hooked on it and really enjoyed the show. True blood on the other hand to me started really strong but like Yosso said this last season wasnt very good, at least in my opinion. I really doubt im gonna watch this next season :-/
Definitely True Blood, Vampire diaries is one of the most repetitive tv shows ever made, their are consistently big story arcs about the exact same thing, and there's always some kind of deux es machina involved, and the love triangle is just so stupid that it makes me wish 50% of the main characters were killed off just so I dont have to continue watching their cyclical relationships.

My girlfriend watches it, I miss entire seasons and then when I catch a new episode and nothings changed... are they are ever not failing to kill klaus, does Bonnie ever stop finding new sources of power, is there anyone left who's not in someway supernatural, is illayna ever not confused about damon/stefan.... cos every episode I see these seem to be the recurring elements, I manage to predict whats gonna happen consistently due to programs repetitive nature, much to my girlfriends continued annoyance.
Both shows have various unbelievable elements. Vampires diaries started ok but went downhill in the first episode, but I liked the Kate Bush single Running up the hill, so when part of that was played, by some group or other I kept watching.
The whole idea of the Klaus and co. That was just silly, I mean why trust folk who have proven they are not trustworthy.
True Blood is just soft porn, a bit like some of the vampire films of the 70's.
It seems that both shows should have ended a season or two ago. As it is they'll both get sillier and sillier. Both will end up as just light entertainment.
Pretty much the same as what some folk here think of the Buffy TVS show, as there are many threads about seasons that aren't appreciated.
I'll keep watching them both, not on the telly but on DVD, that way I can choose which bits I watch.
Haha, there are a lot of pointless sex scenes in True Blood, I'll give you that, mostly with Bill, Sookie and Eric.
I was really looking forward to Season 2 of True Blood (spoilers ahead if you haven't watched True Blood) but the Manaeid (however you spell it) storyline was just ridiculous in my opinion, being a catalyst for yet more pointless sex. The whole metaphor for her being the uncontrolled Id, or whatever just didn't work. Plus, they really could have done a far better job with Jason's Republican right-wing vampire hate camp thing. It was all a bit messy.
Then came Season 3 and Russell Edgington, the most annoying vampire ever conceived. I actually cheered when he finally died in Season 5! The werewolf storyline wasn't great and it made NO sense for Eric and Bill to bury Russell in concrete rather than just let him die in the sun. Furthermore, the Season 2 cliffhanger with Jason shooting Eggs went absolutely nowhere! There was so much potential for that to cause friction between Tara and Jason, but they just completely blew that opportunity to show more pointless vamp sex. Plus, Sookie's half fairy? Fairy? Yeah, that is lame.
Season 4 gets better, but still isn't Season 1 standard. I liked the idea of a witch having a grudge against vampires and thought the execution of that was ok. But Eric with his memory wiped was a ridiculous, stupid way to get him and Sookie to finally shag. Eric without his memories is essentially a completely different character to the regular Eric, there's no continuity. Eric is not adorable, naive or childlike as he's portrayed in much of this season.
Then we come to Season 5 - where the authority, who were all for mainstreaming, all suddenly become religious fanatics in the space of an episode. Just like that. It makes NO sense. Especially with Bill. He's always been the one with the most empathy for humans, why would he be the one most devoted to this freaky vampire cult religion? It would make more sense if it were Eric. And I think it was a mistake for them to show us the authority. They should have kept it a mystery, because I was massively underwhelmed to find that they authority consists of a few loser vampires. The whole vampire fundamentalism thing just doesn't work either.
Anyway, rant over 🙂 I wonder why I kept watching season after season.
ItMustBeBunniesHaha, the fairy thing is lame I agree. It comes from the books, you'd think with all they have changed they would try and change that on the show, haha
I prefer True Blood over Vampire Diaries, but honestly, I'm not a huge fan of either.
I love the True Blood books, though, and I wish they hadn't changed a lot of the stuff for the show. The really pointless sex scenes in the show are annoying and I honestly think they're just there for the shock factor, which I hate.
I tried to read the Vampire Diaries novels, but as soon as I read the part where Elena was a blonde, I closed the book. It was just too jarring a difference, I couldn't get Nina Dobrev out of my head. Again, a glaring example of moving too far away from the source material.
I find both entertaining; not great, but entertaining enough to keep up with. Though, to be honest, I wouldn't miss either show if I never saw another episode. Both have their highs and lows as far as story lines and acting go.

The Vampire Diaries: more of a high school drama filled with fantasy, true love, angst and prom.
The Good
The Original's - neat concept of having some vampires more powerful and less destructible than others.
Eye candy - shallow as it may be, the cast is pretty.
Daylight rings - I like the idea of vamps being smart enough to figure out a loophole in the whole burn in sunlight dilemma.
Katherine - she's bad-ass. The show could use more of her.
The Bad
The love triangle - ugh. Brothers? Really. Boring with a touch of gross.
The Originals - yup, they are strong and weak point. They are suppose to be these bad-ass immortal vamps but that fact is often forgotten.
Characters - there are numerous characters which I can't bring myself to care about. Indifference isn't good in this case.
True Blood: more of an explicit fantasy story with lots of nudity and sex...oh and a little gore.
The Good
Lots of eclectic characters to get to know. There is a character for everyone to enjoy.
Minimal vampire make up. IMO it's nice to see some normal looking vampires makes it more believable that society would accept them.
The Vampire Authority - the concept of vampires having their own governing system is interesting.
The Bad
The sex. Sometimes they overdo it. (obviously, lots of people would consider this good)
Too many plot lines at once. Sometimes that show feels cramped...that becomes tedious when the stories are so far fetched.
I watch both, but I definitely prefer True Blood over TVD.
I find I get bored with TVD a lot, they draw story lines out (like the whole Stefan/Elena/Damon love triangle) for way too long until I just don't care anymore. But, its still entertaining.
I was hooked on True Blood straight away. Season 1 really is the best, and while I agree that some stuff that has happened in the show is totally silly, I sort of appreciate most of that. I feel like the fact that TB can be so over the top campy and silly is part of its charm. TB knows what it is and is in on the joke, its meant to make you laugh. Although, sometimes they go too far.
As for the sex, I agree that it can be totally over the top and pointless, but I kinda feel like I'm desensitized to it now, haha.
I love a lot of the characters, like Eric, Pam, Lafayette and Jessica etc. I find them more interesting than any of the characters on TVD. I even like Bill.....so long as he isn't with Sookie 😉 I love his father/daughter relationship with Jessica and
I dig him being all crazy and evil. I'm interested to see the whole "Blilith" thing. I like Bill much better bad 🙂
I also really love the books. I don't think they are particularly well written, but for me they are just pure fun and entertaining. I'm about a quarter of the way through the last book right now. I already know the ending, I stumbled across all those spoilers that were leaked before the book came out.
While I'm disappointed, I'm not at all surprised. I wish I could say that I'm surprised by the fan reaction though. Personally, although I don't like it, I get it. And I actually respect Charlaine Harris for not kowtowing to the fans and sticking with her vision of how it should end. I met her last year, and she was so sweet 🙂
[MENTION=12359]Yosso[/MENTION] - I totally get all of the things you say are wrong with the show. I'm actually watching season 2 at the moment, and the whole Maryanne thing is lame. But I love those last few episodes with Jason, Andy and Sam. The three of them together crack me up. Sam: "Smite me mother f**ker!", Jason: "I have come, and now I am here!" hehehe. And Andy is just great the whole season as the town drunk "It was a bull! In a dress! With claws!" 😉
I used to be hooked to Vampire Diaries. But now I'm sick of the relationships (like, we waited for 4 years to get DE together and we're still waiting and it's crappy and they're destroying the relationship more than anything else). And I'm sick of the crappy twist. And I hate most of the characters (the ones I like are mostly dead).
True Blood I used to watch and like. Not love, but like. And then Eric had sex with his sister. I know, I know, it wasn't his real sister, but still... I stopped watching shortly after that. If I want to watch porn, I'll watch porn, not a TV show.
I prefer The Vampire Diaries. I loved True Blood at first and while both shows are fantasy based, I just feel like True Blood gets further & further out there the farther they go along. I feel like it's lost what was magical about it the first season & maybe even the second season. But The Vampire Diaries has kept me hooked. Love the cast, love the characters & I don't feel like it's gone too far away from what makes it special. I guess it comes down to personal taste in the end though.
I've never given the Vampire Diaries a fair chance. To me it came out around the time when Vampires were to far trendy and teen-targeted. While Buffy was aimed at teens, too, it wasn't as trendy at the time. I've heard great things but never have watched it.

I've never seen True Blood cause I don't have HBO. But I am absolutely addicted to The Vampire Diaries!! I even got my husband into it... TVD starts out as a high school drama but it quickly broke free of that cliche, IMO.

LOL Right?! My husband and I were watching Season 3 when I was trying to get him caught up before Season 4 aired and he was like "When the hell do these kids go to school?" 😉

Btw I decided to watch True Blood to see what all the hype is about. I only watched the first two epidodes and...just no. Vampire Diaries is way better. True Blood wasnt even holding my attention. I dont wanna say it was stupid but...it seemed stupid. I mean maybe its just me. I think Twlight is stupid too lol
I like both. They bring different styles of entertainment to me. True Blood if I want R18 stories and a adult show, and if I want easy watching I go to TVD. Mind you I'm half way through TDV s1 and Half way though TB s2.
