Vampire dreams

No, not the title of the latest paranormal romance novel. 😉

I was just thinking about Buffyverse vampires & sleep and dreaming. Now, our favorite vamps are different than vampires in other 'verses. Typically we see traditional vampires like Dracula tend to sleep during the daytime, mostly in coffins. And the vampires in Sookie Stackhouse's world (at least in the books, I don't really follow True Blood) NEED to sleep. They can't be out during the daytime at all. They can't function, even inside a shaded house. They have to have a completely blacked out room, coffin, basement etc or they actually re-bury themselves in the ground. Our fav Buffyverse vamps don't need to do that. They can be awake during the day, can move about inside or even in the shade outside! They seem to sleep at random times, not always during the day. Do they physiologically even NEED to sleep? We know that they do sleep, we observe them sleeping, & Spike verbally affirms to Dawn that vampires do indeed sleep. We also know that they dream- we see both Angel and Spike dreaming. So, what do you think the function of that is? To show the more human side of the vampire? If we didn't have sympathetic/souled vampires, would we have seen this? And how does this compare to other shows/movies that feature vampires (as Buffy is the only vampire show that I watch)?

For the dreaming, me theory is just that it shows that vampires have complete brain functions, which we already know they do. How is that possibly, well I'm not sure, vampires really don't make a lot of sense anatomy wise.

It's the same for sleeping, my guess is that just like food, they don't need it, but can do it if they want. I guess it passes time during the day.

Here's something else to consider. Assuming that vampires in the Buffyverse DO dream, are their dreams based on the memories of their human hosts, something totally demonic, or a combination of the two?

Personally, I do think that vampires dream. Their version of a nightmare (daymare?) is a dream about their human host with a loving family and close friends.

That, or being drowned in footwear.
