Hi all!
I was wondering if you all watch/read other vampire stuff other than Buffy/Angel?
I've always been really interested in vampires in popular culture in general, and of course I've read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, and I own a lot of vampire films...anyone know of anything else I could read or watch that is vampire-related? I was thinking of reading Twilight, even though it is YA...the reviews are good.

Is it worth reading? (NO spoilers, please!)
 
Have you read Dracula? I read it when I was about 13 and I really enjoyed it. Haven't read anything else though.
 
I have read the (almost) whole Twilight series - I just bought the new book yesterday, but I haven't started it yet. I have enjoyed the books and I think the series is definitely a fun read, but keep in mind that Stephanie Meyer has created her own vampire mythology, so some of the things you are used to seeing when it comes to vampires won't be found in the books. I would say if you have library access give it a go! You can always stop reading if you don't enjoy the writing style or characters or whatnot. 🙂
 
Yeah, the Twilight series is a lot of fun...I admit, Stephenie Meyer's not the best writer in the world, but the books are still very enjoyable. Definitely check them out if you see them.
 
Laurell(sp?) K Hamilton is the creator of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. I've never read the series but a friend does and assures me its good. However we have different tastes.

Anita Blake is a far cry from Buffy, but not bad. Pretty dark with little to no humor if memeory serves.
I've read all four books in the Twilight Saga. They're very interesting, a totally different vampire world than what you are used to. If you can remember that you are reading fiction and not a history of vampires (because believe it or not, vampires are not real... they're made up) then you shouldn't have any trouble liking a new vampire twist.

If you're going to read them, I would suggest reading the final book twice, to really understand and appreciate how the story ends. That's what I had to do.

Kim Harrison and Kelley Armstrong are really good, too. Kelley Armstrong's stuff focuses more on the werewolves and witches, but there are vampires. And Kim Harrison's work is just amazing. I highly recommend it.
 
I've never read any vampire novels but I really want to..espcially Twilight. That looks pretty good. I'm just scared I'll think its lame after seeing Buffy and all.
 
I can recommend the 'Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse' series by Charlaine Harris.

As can I.

Think of it this way; if people were unsure about some weird character named "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", imagine the same confusion with a character named "Vampire Bill". Not Armand, Lestat, Dracula or some exotic named vamp, just "Bill". In other words not your run of the mill vamp story in the same way that Buffy isn't your run of the mill vamp story.

I read some Anne Rice, Twilight (and I think that book sucks pretty much), and Carmilla. But I do like vampire stories, vampired are kind of fascinating. Haha, it is however some kind of conflict of interests, that in Buffyverse vampires are mostly dead and need to be staked (except our favourite vamps, of course), while in others they somehow come off as the good guys.
 
I'd go with the Anita Blake-verse. Those are some of my favorite novels. But be warned, they are not for the faint hearted. Some books are very violent and bloody, but usually the explicit stuff is of a different nature 😉 I wouln't recommend these books to anyone of the male species, but if you're looking on a different twist on the vampire mythology, you can't go much further than vampires being legal citizens, and technically 'alive'. Not only does Anita's world involve vampires, but lycanthropes (of all flavors, not just werewolves), necromancers, witches, zombies, faeries and mermaids.


I've never read any of Anne Rice's books, but something DLou was doing recently in Merrick made me want to give them a try, so they'll be next on my list. I've no interest in reading any of the Twilight series as of yet, but I'll probably see the movie (is it a movie?), but I think I might give the Sookie Stackhouse series a go.

The Sookie series also isn't limited to just vamps. It's got other staples as well.
Well the Necroscope series comes to mind, but be forwarned it makes Anita Blake look like Sesame Street. It can be and often is very raunchy and weird, and very, very brutal. I'm not so sure I would recommend it for everyone. I both liked some of it and I really disliked some of it.

A story I really enjoyed was an old Dungeons and Dragons ravenloft novel written in the early 90's called "Vampire of the Mists." (I think) I can't recall the author name but the story was pretty cool and alittle heart wrenching, too. A recent popular vampire movie totally lifted its ending from that book!

You mentioned movies as well as book and this week at the trusty WalMart I saw 'Lost Boys 2' was for sale. I loved the original and laughed at a recent trailer when Corey Fieldman's returning character said something about his or someones sister being a 'suck monkey' It might have both vampires, friend dynamics, and humor like Buffy does....or it might be the suck monkey!

And though not a vampire movie, Evil Dead's Army of Darkness is just so weird and funny that while I'm talking vampire/Buffy like movies, I have to mention it..... the Ash character always strikes me as possibly being Xanders cousin.

Ash like Xander? No way, Ash is cool, he knows how to talk to chicks and stuff. Plus hes got a saw or a shotgun for a hand, at this moment in time I fail to recall.

I do not recall reading any vampire books, though I have read a couple of shed loads of books, so I must have. The only vampire films I recall are The Lost boys and Dracula with the guy that says "woooo" from the matrix. The Lost Boys was cool but it kinda had a well, below average ending. Dracula, I've only ever seen drunk. Ching! That explains that movie.

So. I've read two of the Twilight books...and I must admit, they are very entertaining 🙂 I'm waiting for the third one now, it's on order. 🙂
 
Hehe, because of just finding Buffy this month, I'm still not very far into "Breaking Dawn."

I've heard great things about the Southern Vampire Series.

My recommendations:
The Vampire Diaries-it's a 90s Twilight. It's author, LJ Smith is a favorite of mine. Luckily, most of her stuff is being re-printed last year to 2009. Vampire Diaries Omnibus came out last year [There's a brand new one coming out next year as well], Secret Circle (witchcraft) this year, and Night World (a bit of everything) this year and next. The only thing not being reprinted is Forbidden Game and I recommend them if you can find used copies.


Two other series I recommend, even though vampires aren't heavily represented. If you liked Harry Potter, you'll probably like these:

I have a confession. I can never make it far into Bram Stoker's Dracula. ::bbat::

Vampire diaries KARMA! I thought I was the only one who knew them, they are amazing
Fred Saberhagen has a series about Dracula that starts with "An Old Friend Of The Family" that is good, and completely unlike any other version of vampires in general and Dracula in particular that you are ever likely to have encountered.
 
Well. I just finished the third Twilight book...and I must say, I'm enjoying them way more then I thought I would...

I do see a lot of similarities in her 'verse as I do in Anne Rice and Buffy...
Meyer, I dare say, isn't the most original writer, but I would reccomend her books anyway...
I'm like, number 400 and something on the book hold list at the library for "Breaking Dawn" lol...I might just buy it. 🙂
