Vampires and Garlic

I always wondered, does garlic have any negative effect on vampires? In The Harvest, Buffy points out that garlic is in fact effective against vamps when Xander asks her. And also in one episode, in season 5 or 6, where Buffy wants to keep Spike away from her room, she hangs garlic up everywhere. Does garlic hurt the vampires in the Buffyverse?
 
That is a concept i always wondered about, cos that wasn't used much.
Plus it is said to be herb for healing of somekind, but don't quote me on that lol
it may just cause an alergic reaction to them. Or the smell.....lol.
 
I always presumed that the garlic fumes would burn the vampire like Holy Water. But I don't recall it ever being explained much at all in the Buffyverse. Maybe it didn't work with the style of the show, in ATS in particular I can't imagine one of the main characters fending of a vamp with a string of garlic cloves.
 
Well i didn't think Garlic in its regular form did any damage to the Vampire, i though it was the effect Garlic has on the Blood. Isn't it a cleaning/thinning agent so maybe it has adverse effects that way.
Or maybe its a superstitious thing that just never was explored, i don't know.
 
lol, well its just a classic thing isn't it, garlic is used in all vampire legends, I dunno if it was ever explained in anything else though. Maybe it just stops them going over a threshold or something.
 
I don't really remeber B saying much in detail about garlic, but in other legends, it acts like holy water, and can burn them..Obivously in the buffyverse it affects them, cuz B and the scoobies do use it sometimes, I just don't think it's one of those real serious Vampire remedys u know?
 
I was wondering about it lately... yesterday. Maybe it's the smell. I read something about it, but I can't remember.

That's what I thought too, hence why it was worn around the neck..in hopes the vampire would bite the garlic instead, or see the garlic and decide it wasn't worth the hassle.

You don't see people holding out a string of garlic at a vampire like they would a cross, it's always around the neck/body! 🙂
 
Sort of like a ward. You know just puts out the heebie jeebie signal to the vamps and makes them think twice about going near.

That's what I've always thought.

I do like the allergic theory though! 🙂
