I was just wondering, for no real reason, about this, and thought I'd see what the other folks here thought.

Do you think that, within the confines and rules of the Whedonverse, werewolves, like vampires, might be potentially immortal, or, at least, have much longer life spans than normal humans? The transformation from human to wolf and back again seems to heal injuries, so why couldn't it also counteract the major physical effects of normal aging?
 
Maybe there is just a picture of a very old grey dog in the loft......

You know its never even crossed my mind... until now!

What an interesting question to ask, I wouldn't be surprised if they do have a longer life span rather than being immortal like vampires, damn we need Joss to answer this question now haha.
 
If anything I would say it would hasten the lifespan; physiological effects on the body aside, the average age of the wolf is 20 years, while currently the average human age is 65. One could assume then a werewolf could be expected to have an average age of 50ish (adding a few years to the statistical age due to the transformation happens but one time- for three days according to lore- a month.
 
I agree with Scobro. It makes more sense than an increased lifespan.

I may be a little biased through Harry Potter though were being a werewolf are shown to have much worse effects on the infected human than in BtVS - after all we've never seen any ill effects on Oz than the obvious.

Well, that might be true if the person turned into an actual wolf, as several other writers depict, but Whedon's werewolves, while sharing some features and mannerisms with wolves, appear to be a completely different species. There's no reason to believe that a 6ft 4in 250 pound, bipedal, werewolf would have the same lifespan as a (at most) 120 pound quadruped. As far as has been definitely established, the only thing that will kill a Whedon werewolf is a silver bullet, and, I would suspect, a direct hit from Buffy's rocket launcher.

Never said it would.. it would average though.. the 'man' aspect would prevent the same aging from taking place. I did not even figure a direct halve but added a decade onto the total. I think it would have an adverse effect.

Also cutting them up into pieces and serving them tar tar killed them.
 
Yes, we know that silver kills werewolves but it's not necessarily the only thing. Oz killed Veruca by biting into her neck. As for aging? There is nothing in the canon to suggest a human's lifespan is affected at all by Lycanthropy.
