Once again, Buffy puts the bite on the Wolf. If like me, you're a fan of the cruelly cancelled cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, today is a blood-red-letter day. This afternoon, two episodes of the series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, and another from the Buffy spinoff, Angel, will be on the screen at the Wolf Performance Hall -- free.
Two Buffy experts -- author Nikki Stafford and collectible dealer Christine Mak, both ex-Londoners, will be on hand. At last year's event, Stafford and Mak talked up the show's undeniable genius. We all screamed and hooted like kids at a Saturday matinee. It's great to have Stafford and Mak back with more vampire-staking Buffy.
"I'm a television hound and Buffy the Vampire Slayer is by far the best show I've ever seen," e-mails Stafford, known for her unauthorized guide to Buffydom, Bite Me! She has just published a companion guide to Angel, called Once Bitten, and has co-written a guide to another TV show with a female hero, Alias. She attended high school and university in London and now lives in Toronto.
Mak, of Richmond Hill, spent six years studying engineering at Western. She is a friend of London Public Library video librarian Laura MacRae, the organizer again after last year's Buffy-in-the-Wolf success. "There are many enthusiastic fans that never watched the shows until they stumbled across (Buffy) at a convention. Buffydom is contagious and there's no flu shot for it," Mak says.
Despite the noble efforts of these three heroes, too many Londoners have so far been able to resist superpowered Buffy. That means they've missed out on her friends and vampire foes and the show's jokes, pop culture references, tragic deaths, happy endings and many apocalypses.
It must be said the New PL keeps the Buffy faith, screening episodes in the wee hours each weekend. For her part, Gellar is starring in the horror flick The Grudge.
But put your stake in this -- nothing in Buffydom beats a screening and a screaming at the Wolf.
