Vampires - Breathing VS Smelling

Ok, we all know that (in the whedon-sense) Vampires don't "breathe". But we've all seen the inconsistencies with that with Angel, Spike, & Darla.

However... Vamps have TRIPLE the smell sense that humans do. They can "track" a human (or whatever they wanna track!) by smell. Several scenes show Spike and Angel "smelling" (read: SNIFFING) to get the "whereabouts" of whoever they were tracking.

How can the sense of SMELL be extra extra intense ... esp. if you don't "breathe"? When you "sniff", you take in air.

Duh. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
 
The sense of smell doesn't depend on the vampire's lack of need for oxygen. They obviously CAN breathe, in fact they HAVE to, to be able to speak, to smoke tobacco (or anything else), or to sample and identify different scents. In fact, it could be argued that, like blinking, breathing is an involuntary reflex, so vampires breathe most of the time unless they consciously will themselves not to. (which makes it easier for the actors playing vampires) I wouldn't be surprised if Spike even snores. Lustily, of course.
 
I think in the sense of "Breath", it is the literal removal of oxygen into the bloodstream.
"Sniffing" is just that.

As for why a vampire who does not extract oxygen from the air makes a bad agent for CPR, well that one doesn't make much sense.
Maybe they breathe out old dust or something... which would be detrimental.

That is actually a much better question.
One would think that they would be excellent for CPR if they don't use any oxygene that they inhale and breath out everything again.

But apparantly it doesn't work like that either... so I guess their bodies just absorbs the air or something.
Which maybe is the reason why they have so good sense of smell 🙂
