Vampires catch fire....

Ok so i noticed one thing the other day and has been bugging me since.

it was that when ever exposed to sunlight, a vampires clothes catch fire, sometimes before his face or hands.
Why is this?

And also, if there shirts catch fire then shouldn't also a blanket covering them catch fire?

any body have any potential answers.

I'm sure this has something to do with the special effects being easier and cheaper. Also, if the clothes were separate from the people, we'd have a lot more naked people in the Buffyverse. And the FCC says no to that. And, you know, sunlight wouldn't be nearly as much of an impediment to vampires.

The best Buffyverse theory I ever heard had to do with the idea that the vampire's magically reanimated body included an aura that extended just a bit beyond the actual flesh so that anything caught in that aura - like the first layer of clothes, but not the blanket - would be included in the magic (so in the dusting or burning).

On more than one occasion on Buffy, we see Spike running into either the Magic Box or Buffy's home covered in a smoldering blanket, so it must be included in the vampire combustion aura as well as the clothes. On a similar note, when a vampire has its heart penetrated by wood, whether a stake, arrow, pool cue, or whatever, the wood turns to dust along with clothes, jewelry, or anything else directly attached to its body, the only exception being if the wood implement is quickly withdrawn before the dusting process begins.

All of that can only be chalked down as simplified special effects rather than some pseudo scientific Buffyverse rule of vampirism. In other words, just like the cowboy's "nine shooter," just cringe and enjoy the show.

On a similar note, when a vampire has its heart penetrated by wood, whether a stake, arrow, pool cue, or whatever, the wood turns to dust along with clothes, jewelry, or anything else directly attached to its body, the only exception being if the wood implement is quickly withdrawn before the dusting process begins.

There have been a few exceptions, for instance , im not sure in which season, we see Buffy slaying, she dust the vamp and there she finds a ring which she takes to Giles. Maybe im remembering wrong, but i think it happened in the firs three seasons.

Sometimes the staking implement poofs, sometimes it doesn't. I decided (for the sake of my own internal continuity) that if the staker lets go of the implement, it turns to dust along with the vamp. If they don't, or if they pull it out of the vampire before it dusts, then the implement doesn't dust.

I have too many thoughts. Remind me to tell you about my internal continuity thing about the stunt doubles sometime. 🙂

Secondly, the vampire doesn't wear the blanket, it's the same way as if Spike was holding the blanket and got staked, it wouldn't disappear.

And about the rings and stuff, I'm guessing that certain mystical objects just don't go poof.

Gosh. Remember when Illyria staked Spike? I was like, "Holy crap! They've got some balls, bringing him back and then just staking him like that!" Then, Gunn and Wes died, too, and I was like, "Oh, okay. They're going to undo this somehow."
