I have always loved Vampires - Dracula, Lestat, Louis, Armand, Angel, Spike etc. etc. So I was surprised to find that Dracula was not the first Vampire in English Literature. And more surprisingly, both the first English literature vampire and Frankenstein were concieved at the same time in the same place.

From Wilkepedia -

The story has its genesis in the summer of 1816, the Year Without a Summer, when Europe and parts of North America underwent a severe climate abnormality. Lord Byron and his young physician John Polidori were staying at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva and were visited by Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley and Claire Clairmont. Kept indoors by the "incessant rain" of that "wet, ungenial summer",over three days in June the five turned to telling fantastical stories, and then writing their own. Fueled by ghost stories such as the Fantasmagoriana, William Beckford's Vathek and quantities of laudanum, Mary Shelley produced what would become Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. Polidori was inspired by a fragmentary story of Byron's and in "two or three idle mornings" produced "The Vampyre".

For anyone interested here is the link to the text of "The Vampyre" by John William Polidori.

Do you know of Lilith in Jewish mysticism? She was inspired, if you will, from Sumerian legends. So vampires go back much further than one would think.

Uncle Rory agrees: Apparently Vampires appear in one form or another in almost all cultures. Cool.
edit:
as does the flood

Where do werewolves come from?
That little get together by these famous writers and friends was fictionalized in a movie but I cannot find what it was called. No amount of internet research brings me to the answer.

Late 80s or early 90s I believe. Anyone know the name of the movie?

Has anyone ever seen Salem's Lot?

I think it might be one of the scariest vampire films out, even if it does have Hutch, from 'Starsky and Hutch' in it. I watched it as a kid, scared the hell out of me.

Salem's Lot (1979)

look up word origins for lunatic and you will find where the werewolf mythos started

Actually one of the Universal Frankenstein movies in the 1930's does so, with the meeting and the actress portraying Shelley narrating the film at the beginning.

^ Aww, cool! Are you enjoying it?

I love scary books, pure drive me mental, it's fun.

I remember reading Salem's Lot when I was younger and being very freaked out...though I've never seen the movie...

Scariest books ever, though? For psychological horror...House Of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski...for creepy psycho death horror...Intensity by Dean Koontz...

*shudders*

Vampires are minted. Dead creepy though. i like their booshy political take on things. Would still run like hell though if i seen one. Rather than meet and greet. x

Know of her? My little baby girl is NAMED after her! Wouldn't lie under Adam, refused to be subjugated by men. Course she ate babies too, but you can't win 'em all.

I needed a kick ass feminist name for any progeny of MINE 🙂 And as I was already Kali.....

Gotta love Kali. Lilith's pretty cool too, though.
Of Salem
About ten years prior to Salem in the western part of that state there was a split in the Quaker religion, one of the factions persued the members of the other faction killing them,
'RUMOUR' has it that the first deaths in Salem were of that and subsequent killings were covered up with a witch hunt.

Lilith (According to Jewish Mythology) was caste out of the garden of eden with one of her sons, he (Cain, how-ever it's spelt, killed his brother) [couldn't have been very 'Abel' at self defense]. They were said to be the first demons, now vampires are demons, but it wasn't stated, although my choice is vampires.

I think it was in 1922 that a person by the name of Bram Stoker wanted to make a film but he couldn't get copyright permission to use the name Dracula, so he started the name Nosferatu.

It is said The Master is based on Nosferatu.

The word "lullaby" comes from "Lilith bye," a chant that ancient people used to sing each night protect their infant children each night to ward off you-know-who.

That's the coolest thing ever. You're a cool girl, I like your thinking.

It was Murnau that did not get the right to dracula so he made Nosferatu

Thats awesome Kali, I decided some time ago if I had a daughter her middle name would be Lilith.

I love the myth, but centuries before Genesis was written she was a Sumerian goddess, I think of motherhood and childbirth.

And her devouring of children was only after her banishment from Eden and subsequent slaughtering of her own children by a trio of Angels. So its not like she wasn't driven to being bad (if you believe the Christian myth over the original Sumerian).
