Vampires

Thats awesome Kali, I decided some time ago if I had a daughter her middle name would be Lilith.

I love the myth, but centuries before Genesis was written she was a Sumerian goddess, I think of motherhood and childbirth.

And her devouring of children was only after her banishment from Eden and subsequent slaughtering of her own children by a trio of Angels. So its not like she wasn't driven to being bad (if you believe the Christian myth over the original Sumerian).

Yeah I know, but I like to scare people!

Her middle name is Lilith..... thought that way she could use it when she is older, if she wants a change 🙂

Also, loved Frasier too 😉

Cool and yes I watch Fraiser too, wouldn't say I love it though
look up word origins for lunatic and you will find where the werewolf mythos started

My dictionary says that people used to believe that changes in the moon caused temporary insanity 🙂

People still think that! My mom always says, "Oh no! It's a full moon! Something weird's going to happen."

Edit:

The word "lullaby" comes from "Lilith bye," a chant that ancient people used to sing each night protect their infant children each night to ward off you-know-who.

That is really interesting...nice thread guys!

Just ask anyone who works in a hospital emergency room. Way busy on a full moon.
I always stay home when it's a full moon, I believe that is when some weird shit will go down.

I really believe that. I love the moon, you can tell when it will be a full moon if you keep watching it.

That little get together by these famous writers and friends was fictionalized in a movie but I cannot find what it was called. No amount of internet research brings me to the answer.

Late 80s or early 90s I believe. Anyone know the name of the movie?

Is it Gothic? Ken Russell.

Yes, I have seen this...creepy!
I remember that movie! Barely. Did not know that Gabriel Byrne was in it.. Hm.

I'm not a fan of this mordern morphing of the vampire mythos into some kind of misunderstood angels who happen to drink blood, kind of thing - Twilight.

Us vamp fans are getting grouped in with the Chanterelles. Or did anybody see the recent South Park where they lampoon the high school vamp cults that are popping up? It's so funny. The goths get all pissed off at them for being A-list, new age, phonies who are degrading their cultural identity.

This recent interest by tweens for vampire fiction/movies, etc is interesting. I went to Barnes and Noble yesterday (large bookstore) and there was an entire isle on Teen Vampire Ficiton. Kid you not. All Twilight rip offs...It just kills me, because all this is just a rip off on Anne Rice's books, which are so much better.

I think it's fascinating how the modern world romantisizes (sp?) vampires. I think the public's obsession with them says something about our current society. We have this fascination with death, it seems.

Either that, or it's just cause back then they looked like Christopher Lee, and now they look like James Marsters!

Well as someone who started into a lot of Vampire lore, movies, books, television shows (including Buffy) as a teenager I can honestly say they won't all turn out bad. 😉

Rubbish! the vampire is not about death but life. Look at all the sexual metaphors- the vampire that controls the woman to suit his needs, the sucking of the blood as the woman is often in a state of bliss. It's about sensuality, the lust for life and passion in general moreso than death. At least the classics, I cant really speak on the modern tales.

Got to love the classics.

I think it's more that teen girls consider them an ultimate fantasy. It's the total "bad-boy" thing taken to another unattainable level.

My wee brother learned the word lunar before moon. hes not spainish. He would catch a glimpse of the moon when he was like 1 and half and point and say lunar. no one taught him this, not sure where. he picked it up from. ..Always thought it was kinda weird but really cute.

Aye, that's true. But then again, your family is pretty weird. Maybe Arran is a child genius.
