Vamps at the Crucifixion

If there are and have been vampires all over the world, why is that only a Christian religious symbol - the cross - can repel a vampire? Why not the Star of David, or other non-Christian symbols?

This made me decide to bring something up that I have been thinking of: would a cross have any effect against a vampire that was Muslim when he was alive? Would a miniature Torah scare off a vamp that was Jewish but a cross wouldn't do spit?

One series of books I read, the Anita Blake series, says that symbol has to be backed by faith and that and atheist waving a cross to ward off a vampire is a rather pitiful sight. That doesn't seem to be the case in the Buffyverse, but it's a nice touch.

I also read somewhere that the Star of David wouldn't work because it's more a racial symbol than a religious one. If I'm wrong on this one, let me know.

Actually, phoenixrising, that's true. That comes up now and again in old vampire movies. The vamp scoffs, says "you gotta have faith for that to work!". Then the vamp hunter shuts his eyes, grips the crucifix a little tighter and, voila! The vamp's cowering in the corner.

So, again, in that conception, faith is irrelavant to the vamps. They already know the score. Faith is something that's critical for the human.
