It's war, and there will be casualties not soon forgotten as Buffy faces her most fearsome enemy.
Buffy creator Joss Whedon and series artist Georges Jeanty join forces for the most emotional issue to date as they approach the finale of Season Eight.

Does it mean Giles betrays Buffy and the gang? Or it's just Giles-centric issue? Oh no! He'd better have a good reason. And I hope he won't die. 🙁

Ugh, I almost hate viewing these, since we know we won't be able to read these issues for awhile. The suspense is killing me!

Casualties?

Aw, crap....

I've said and I'm saying it again... y'all kill Dawnie and I'm outta here! Ya hear me, Mr. Whedon! I'll quit this thing. And then you'll miss me, cuz I'm awesome.

And cuz I make the bestest cheesecake ever!!!!

I believe a version of Giles will die. This guy on the cover just doesn't strike me as our guy. I'm getting very Alt!Gilesy vibes from him.

We've been told the last great watcher died at the Battle of Starbuck (which Allie said we have "room for") in this arc. So, I wouldn't be surprised if Giles met his demise here.

Although, thinking back on Fray now that would also suggest that Buffy will die too. I wonder will there be an Alt!Buffy to take her place?

Too many theories! Gah!

Also, I am just reading Jane Espenson's interview with Buffyfest and this jumped right out at me. Has she just given a major spoiler away?

Buffyfest: Where do you see Buffy when she's 50 years old?

JE: In which timeline? I can see a future where she's scarred and bitter, and I can see one where she's transcendent and at peace. I don't feel it's for me to declare one more valid than the other.

The impression that I got from the "Fray" version of the last great armageddon was that the as then unnamed Slayer was somehow sucked into another dimension. Maybe that's the Twilight dimension, and Buffy and Angel get to be there after all.
Giles has a crossbow and a stake there, so it looks like he's on Buffy's side. I don't really see him betraying Buffy at this point.

I notice the copy talks about "casualties", plural. I have a feeling we're gonna lose a bunch of Slayers, in addition to at least one Scooby.

*Hugs Satsu, Leah and Rowena*

ETA: Oh... I didn't even notice that remark about the alternate timelines...

He looks very similar to Buffy in Prophecy Girl. There's an iconic image of her in this exact stance.

But nothing happened at the Bronze in PG, did it? X marks the spot.. whatever it will be will be at the Bronze.

Nope but the whole town is rubble right now (also the Masters lair in The Wish was the Bronze) so in a round-about-way, it fits.

Oh, I see... so its just MSUAYGA now.. is there, I mean.. ya know.. a rhyme or reason? it just seems to me its all so, random.

Honestly, right now it pretty much is random but I get the impression that the entire season won't make sense until the last frame of the last issue. Or at least the last frame of 39.

I get the impression it wont make sense unless someone wakes up and says they had the most bizarre dream. I mean, how else can some of the things be... ya know.. rationalized. It lost me with that giant robot in japan. And when Dawn turned into a centaur. Whichever came second. I just.. could not suspend disbelief any longer. I do like reading ABOUT it, but no chance I would ever read it again. No matter how much you say Riley 'episode' kicked arse.

I didn't mind the centaur thing, and I liked the robot scene quite a bit. The only thing that truly bothered me so far was the big Twilight reveal, as well as his motives... and just about everything that followed that...

Nice cover! Our fav watcher will play a much more important role than he has been until now i'm hoping! And I still stick with Dawn being the Scooby who dies. Sorry MineE! 😎

My little boy looked at the cover and asked if that man was bad - He does have a shadowed, villainous look about him... I hope Giles is not the bad guy! I wonder if he is about to make a tough decision and do what no one else will do in order to fix this Twilight problem - something that won't make him popular with Buffy and Co. but something he has to do because he has 'sworn to protect this sorry world'...

wow i so can't wait for this issue, been looking forward to going back to Sunnydale for ages now, Giles looks great in this cover, he looks younger, but i am wondering why he's at the bronze?

The cover looks good. I liked the art for the most part, throughout this series. It's pretty. Now, AAtF, that comic bugged me a whole lot. The art in that book was just atrocious. I could've done better with a box of crayons
