My post above was more borne out of being tired of people claiming to hate Bangel on the grounds of how immature it was (when if examined closely it actually wasn't) and the immaturity and recklessness of Spuffy forever overlooked.

I agree about season 7 so though. I have always maintained that Spike was Buffy's best friend in season 7.

I think a lot of people think Bangel was immature because Buffy was still immature then. I mean of course she was! She was 16 years old! Later when she was with Spike, she had already been through that much. Grown that much. Buffy herself was more mature. So I think that's why some people call Bangel immature and not Spuffy.

Wow. Maybe you need to think more about why Buffy got into that relationship with Spike, what it said about the mental place she was at, before you lose all respect for Buffy! I think maybe you're misunderstanding a few things. 🙂

Yeah, I know what you mean. Though I love Spuffy, the way Buffy acted in S6 was just... Not Buffy. But that was because of the heaven thing. She needed some time to really get back into life and I think in S7 she made it. She knew what she was here for, what she had to do and didn't want to be dead anymore. I think S7 Buffy was the most mature one of all seasons. And for me the real Spuffy relationship is in S7. In S6 it's only sex. But later real feelings and everything. In S7 he had a soul. He tried to do good. And I think that kind of touched her. That he did this. Just for her. And she saw that he could be good. A better man. That she feels it and that she believes in him. So her choice in "being with him" in S7 were mature. Of course she wasn't really with him in the sense of kissing or sleeping together they were bonding. Connecting. Not using each other like in S6

So her choices in S6 weren't the best and she wasn't really mature then. But she was in the last season and that's what I meant.

Actually, I know what they were thinking: "Okay, so we need to give Buffy a sweet, normal, wholesome boyfriend this season. Let's pick a mediocre actor and make his character as boring as possible. Let's also give him the cheesiest, crappiest, lamest lines we can come up with. Crap, the audience is getting bored with that....so let's throw in a government conspiracy! Let's put Riley in fatigues, give him a useless zappy gun instead of something that actually helps, and make him really whiny and insecure! THAT'll be sure to snag the audience. CRAP again, we're losing them! Let's make Riley lose his fighting powers, make him MORE insecure, and reduce him to even less of an interesting person (if that's possible)! Oh NO, that's not right...QUICK, MAKE HIM GET HIS ROCKS OFF TO VAMP WHORES!! Aggghhh too late. Peace out, Riley."

After 7 1/2 seasons of Buffy, nearly 6 seasons of Angel, Firefly+Serenity, and Dr. Horrible, I'm coming to the conclusion that ships of any kind in the Jossverse are just a bad, bad idea.

Spuffy. I recently read an article that furthered my hatred of the ship. Poor Spike, I lost all respect for him. He was possibly the best villain (okay, maybe except for Glory) in the entire series. Then he fell in love with Buffy! okay. 1) overused theme, much?! 2) the guy just handed over his balls 3) way overused plot. He became the slayer's lapdog. It makes me want to cry. She emasculates all the men in her life, Angel and Riley just got out of there earlier. And the accessory thing?! old (better) Spike would never had put up with that!!!! ugh. In the end, I just feel sorry for him

You really thought Spike and Buffy got all of the screen time in season 6? I have to disagree. The writers gave all of the characters plenty of screen time in season 6, and they each had their own plot that contributed a lot to the overall storyline (Willow's magic addiction, Xander and Anya's wedding, Giles' leaving, etc.) I do agree that the first five or so episodes of season 7 were a little bit Spuffy-heavy, but even then, all of the characters got some attention...they only stopped progressing when the Potentials came in.

As for my most hated ships:

Kennedy/Willow - What the hell were the writers thinking?! The actors had no chemistry whatsoever, they didn't have a single thing in common, Willow clearly wasn't over Tara yet when she came...I could go on and on.

Cordy/Connor - It's just icky! She changed his diapers, for god's sakes!

Buffy had spent 3 years telling Spike how much she DIDN'T love him, and then, suddenly, she changed her story. Spike was so shocked by the revelation that he couldn't believe her immediately. Then, when it finally sank in, he burst out laughing. He was so happy that he LAUGHED even while he was burning to a crisp.

Cangel never made an iota of sense to me. In fact, any relationship with Angel just seemed weak. My reasoning? He was essential cheating on whoever he was with. Buffy came along and was everything to him, and throughout the 7 seasons of Buffy, he kept coming in gettin smooches and holding hands etc etc while at the same time hes having feelings for Cordilia? And Darla? And Nina? Dude, just freaking pick one. If you wanted to be with Buffy you could, its no different than being with any of these other chicks... do you see Angel and Cordillia being a good thing for Cordilia? ... all the same reasons he left Sunnydale are the same for any other human.

The Bangel match up was a great love. I loved it. Speaking from my own experience, we all have first loves and they mean a great deal to us and always will, but we have to move on from them. Once their done, their done and Buffy and Angel are no different. It was also a childesh love. Watching the scenes is like living high school all over again when you think youve finally found the 'one'. "My life isnt worth living without you"... "your my everything" "my heart, my body" blah blah blah... Everytime angel whispers "Buffffy...." just the melodrama was ridiculous and clearly was a relationship that wasn't going to last forever.

Briley I thought was a pretty decent relationship, its what she ultimately needed. A strong human man. The fact that Riley was so self involved that he couldnt see Buffy worrying about the possible loss of her mother. I mean seriously, get over yourself, the womans dealing with a lot and shouldnt need to keep you from getting sucked by vamp whores. And then you blame her? And then leave...well yes, actually I do hate Riley. lol.

Spuffy made the most sense to me in the end. It was an adult relationship with a being that was strong enough for Buffy to be who she was. Im not talking about twisted S6 spuffy, as great as I thought that was lol. But S7 Spuffy where we see that Spike is a man who can actually love buffy, he can be there for her, and their both in places where it makes sense (adulthood, not highschool or college).

Kennedy was a stupid idea on the writers part. And if they did want us to be on-board with such a sudden and drastic removal of Tara, then they shouldnt have made Kenndy 'the character' one of the worst most annoying characters in the series. Her constant whining about her predicament and constant rejection of anything Buffy said meant we couldnt love her as a character, nevermind a relationship for one of the best characters on the show. In the S7 commentary they mention that Kennedy (well the actor who plays her) got a pretty thankless task and they think she's great for willow. Well fair enough, thats what they wanted us to feel...well if you want us to feel that, you have to prove that Kennedy is worthy and not just to some lame whining Dawn-esk slayer wannabe.

Kennedy/Willow. (This is probably the most-hated Buffyverse 'ship, I'd guess, but I hate it so much it's worth mentioning.) I realize what the writers were trying to do...pick someone from Willow totally different from Tara, so as not to insult her memory, yadda yadda yadda, but the very existence of Kennedy was such an insult to Tara's memory. Tara was so cherished by Buffy fans, I just don't understand why they believed a new love interest for Willow so soon after Tara's death was a good idea. Try as I might, I cannot see any real depth to the Killow relationship. Kennedy...a selfish, spoiled, immature child, who's kind of a slut, throwing herself at Willow - who, mere MONTHS after the death of the first woman she's ever loved, returns the advances. It doesn't make SENSE. As a character, if the Killow relationship had never come to life, I might have even liked Kennedy. She was annoying at times, but as far as the Potentials went, she could have been worse. At least she wasn't like Rona...she was willing to fight, take action, stand up for herself, etc etc and I liked that about her. But with Willow? Gahhhhhh.

I too read an article about how Buffy emasculates all the men around her as well. It's a great point. It was very interesting...wonder if it was the same article you read? Do you remember what it was called? Although, Buffy does inspire the men she gets involved with to be better men as well (in the case of Angel and Spike). So it's not all bad 🙂

Spike's love for Buffy did turn him into her lapdog, and yes lol, he did lose his balls. But let's face it; Spike was always loves bitch. He has always been emotional, after all, he's a poet deep down. He's always been a hopeless romantic, even when he was evil. Think of his devotion and affection towards Dru despite his evilness. And how ruined he was when she dumped him for the chaos demon.

I just love Spike so much I've learned to love every Spike incarnation. Evil Spike, Drunken and Dumped Spike, Chipped Spike, and Ensouled Spike. But I find it very interesting to hear people's opinions on Spike whom dislike him.

I do agree though, that when I look at it, sans my Spike-love lenses (lol), I can see that his plot was way overused in the last season. There should have been way more plot based on the Core Four. But no regrets. What's done is done. And Buffy is still the best show to come out of television (except maybe Star Trek...).

Well im gonna come to Buffys defense and say that buffy didnt emasculate men. Buffy was the most powerful person and being that person, I think its very easy for people to interpret her actions in a way that paints her as the bad guy. In the case of an article, one that i have no desire to read, this would be a very EASY point to make but at the end of the day isnt justified.

Spike and Angel were both relationships where Buffy encouraged them to be better versions of themselves. Of course, I dont include evil spike in this because lets be honest... why the heck would buffy care about spike? Spike was an anomoly, a neutered vampire who stood for everything she hated. Later in S6 she did begin to care and thats WHY she left him, so that she wouldnt be bringing herself down OR him. Riley is another case of Buffy taking on the world, and trying to juggle a serious relationship. It was a two sided street that Riley decided was all about her and her lack of interest in his self obsessed ass. She never took anything from Riley, in fact she was the most vunerable I have ever seen her with riley so to say she was emasculating is wrong imo.

The only other major men in her life are Giles and Xander. Giles she respected for 6 seasons until she felt Giles expertise would best be suited with the other potentials. That and Giles was begining to do things behind her back and that wasnt right either. For the most part, power was always in Giles hands.

Xander has always been a place where buffy could go emotionally. Think 'puffy Xander' and the talk where he was rebuilding the window after the robot knocked it down. She completely respected his opinion (he conviced her to go after Riley, he convinced she doesnt need a man resulting in cancelling the date with Ben). If anything, i CREDIT buffy for turning Xander; one of the weakest characters of the show into the most emotionally mature character by the series end.
