Is it any good?
Season's 1-3. Yes.
Movie. Yes.
Season 4. No.
The first three seasons have an overall arc but lots of individual cases to solve during it. Season 4 is a made for streaming run of episodes that cover a single arc in a short space of time. It's not a patch on the first three. Also, no Mac in S4.
I can only remember Charisma from Buffy, as she has a recurring role, but there are appearances by people who would become more famous later, such as Jessica Chastain, Paul Rudd and Aaron Paul.

Alyson Hannigan had a recurring role as Logan’s half-sister! AND Joss did a guest role in a season 2 episode!
Veronica Mars is the 00s answer to Buffy. She’s the cool Nancy Drew, not afraid to take on social commentary. There’s also 2 novels that directly tie into the movies and tv show storylines. Rob Thomas truly thought out every season. He is very crafty. I wish it would come back as a more Agatha Christie-esque series where every episode was its own self-contained mystery. But with an ongoing b-story mystery like the first 2 seasons—serial killer? It would elevate the original series’ playbook.

No. Logan is regularly a jerk and I'm rarely fond of the relationship, at least until he grows up a bit, but he's not an obsessed, creepy, abusive stalker.
I guess people class him as a pretty bad boy? Which he may be (I'm not terribly good at classing physically pretty when it comes to guys... 😀) and Spike often gets classed as that, but Spike is an obsessed abuser through and through.

Tried the pilot and its enjoyable albiet a bit of both cheese but also pretty dark too.
Her ex-boyfriends sister (Amanda Seyfried) is murdered, her dad was sheriff got the wrong man and was fired and so she helps him out with his Private Investigator firm ok so far so good. She's also
The victim of date rape at a party thats pretty dark yet immediately irs back to quirky Buffy esq humour and style which is jarring.
That all said its got the quirky Buffy esq style and humour though Veronica is the narrator like in American detective shows.
Overall its fun, I wouldn't say its amazing but good enough to keep watching.
I don't think they needed to keep her in school though. Thats a good enough show idea without the whole High School thing. Especially as the cast clearly don't look like school kids 😄
It actually reminds me a bit of a British show I watched from the late 80s and early 90s called the Diamond Brothers. Where the older brother runs a detective agency and his younger brother is the real brains behind it.

There is quite a bit of darkness in the show for sure. And there are quite a few story threads as well as the Mystery of the Week and arcs.
Season four, which is the only season not set in an educational environment, is by far the worst. However, that probably has more to do with them giving up the format of the first three seasons and it becoming something it wasn't.
So are all 3 seasons set in school ?
How old is Veronica because even from the Pilot there is no way she is 16 or 17 even as a character?
Wasn't there a film as well ?

Season 3 is college, so still an educational environment.
Kirsten Bell was about 24 at the start of the show. Dawson Casting, ya know. 😀
Yes; it's between 3 and 4. But because it's not a season I didn't class it with the others, as films have different structures, even though it's also not in an educational setting.

The film was such a good whodunnit. Setting it almost 10 years after the end of the series worked well in bringing back old characters that could be compelling “killers”. The fourth season could have worked had they not thrown out the mystery of the weeks for a season long mystery. We watched 3 seasons of Mars Investigations balancing cases of the week with the season-long mystery, so it really made 0 sense to not include anything beyond the grocery store and the initial case Veronica was on (and completed) in the first episode.

Seeing the film immediately after season three was a bit weird; everyone had got older so fast! 😀 It did work, though, as it was in some ways a feature length episode.
The fourth season is so much shorter, and it's done like the typical streaming series. Given it was funded by Hulu, I wonder if they pressured for it to be like a streaming series? If so, it didn't work, and the less said about the ending the better. It felt like a completely different series.
Iv watched the first few episodes. Enjoyable but very goofy. Like the episode of the kid who fancies Veronica so gets her to find his father even though his dad is dead, only for it to turn out his dad's alive. So they track down a guy whose hand writing matches a letter only for it to turn out that hes not the dad but hos partner whose Trans and she'd been getting videos from the Blockbuster the kid had been working from 😄 I mean common
Also why did she get her partner to write the letter rather than write the letter herself ?

The goofiness may act as a bit of a counterbalance because when it's not goofy, it's really not goofy.
Iv finished episode 6 and on episode 7 (Parker with a beard) and episode 6 did make me laugh unintentionally where Logan goes and gets a belt for his dad to whip him.
I know its meant to be dark about an abusive dad beating his son but because the actor is clearly in his mid 20s and looks like he could beat up "his dad" if he wanted to, it instead comes across as ridiculous.
Also Veronica acting like a brat because her dad has a girlfriend. Even if she is 16 it's like grow up girl. Your mum and dad have broken up. Whats crazy is her Dad actually goes along with it and breaks up with his girlfriend like wtf

On a side note, Logan's home relationship does go some way to explaining his own tendencies towards jerkish behaviour.

The flip side is that casting actors/actresses that age takes the fantasy out of it which I think would've been an issue for the reboot if it had happened.
In regards to this, I think Veronica Mars as a show would've worked better at College or University. The ages wouldn't have been an issue (adults study at college) and you could've still done the same storylines and character beats.
Im 7 episodes in and its enjoyable enough but certainly not as good as Buffy. Though theres no Anthony Head who really carried that show in its early years.

Season three will give you a chance to see if that works. Though swapping from school to university is admittedly not the same as starting off there.

I really liked the initial mystery of season 3. It felt like the writers had really hit their groove, especially with the main cast now being actual young adults. I honestly wish it was stretched throughout the season like the first 3 because it really had the staying power. And you easily could have still had the subplot of who killed the Dean embedded in the middle as a way to “bring in new viewers midseason” like the network wanted.
Now I want to work on a recut of the season that moves the main storyline of “Spit & Eggs” between “Debasement Tapes” and “I Know What You’ll Do Next Summer”. Then splice a few of the conversations about victims from the first 8 episodes into some of the plots of the back half of the season. And finally the Dean’s storyline from “Spit & Eggs” into the “Lord of the Pi’s” episode
