I Quit Showering, and Life Continued

12,167 hours of washing our bodies.

That’s how much life you use, if you spend 20 minutes per day washing and moisturizing your skin and hair (and you live to be 100, as we all surely will).

That adds up to nearly two entire years of washing every waking hour.

Not to mention water usage and the cost of cosmetic products—which we need, because commercials tell us to remove the oil from our skin with soap, and then to moisturize with lotion. Other commercials tell us to remove the oils from our hair, and then moisturize with conditioner.

That’s four products—plus a lot of water and time— and few people question whether it’s anything short of necessary.

Having been among people who don't shower or bathe, here is the verdict:

IT'S NECESSARY!!!

I can understand people having better things to do, but as much as we may think of ourselves as intellectual beings, we are sacks of meat who eat repulsive stuff and eliminate even more repulsive stuff, including sweat. We are not machines or disembodied spirits, we are chemical factories and with the exception of one mutant girl I heard of whose sweat contained geraniol (so she always smelled like a geranium), the rest of us who have to interact with other people have to wash. Even if you don't interact with other people, you can get unpleasant skin conditions from failing to remove ages of dried sweat from minor itching to more desperate stuff. And that would still apply for geraniol girl.

Besides, the shower is a nice place to be because you are safe from personal interaction at that time and it doesn't matter if the house is overheated or overcooled, you can set the temperature you want. You should only use moisturizer in desert or tundra conditions. Conditioner for your hair is to make it slippery enough that you don't pull great gobs of it out with a comb.

I'm not gonna stop showering, but there is some truth to that. I used to shampoo my hair every single day, and if I'd skip a day it would become a greasy mess. But then as my hair grew longer, washing it became more tedious, and I became more lazy. So screw the greasy mess, I went to washing it every 2 days, and then 3 days. And soon enough it no longer got greasy. Heck, when people compliments your hair and you haven't washed it in 5 days, that's a feat! Now I only wash it twice a week, and it always looks nice.

But showers, well I do still take those everyday 😛 Or else I would permanently smell like barn.

Some barns smell really nice.
It is interesting, because in the past people didn't have readily available hot water for bathing, and bathing in itself was seen as something only the very wealthy did (presumably to differentiate themselves from the common people), so our bodies must be in part designed to live without cleanliness.

But that doesn't mean I'm willing to do as the writer of the article. And that doesn't mean we should have to live like that.

I'm not a massive clean freak (my house will tell you!😀), but I do like to be clean. It just makes me feel better to have clean skin and hair, it's one less thing to worry about. So in a normal day, I can worry more about actual problems than "Do I smell bad?" or "Does my hair look like an olive oil ad?".

Let's not forget, the advent of general cleanliness also helped eradicate disease, so it's not just smelling and looking good, it's about being relatively disease free. I like that in a human. 😉

You could always kill two stones with one bird and facetime your PS4 so you can play it in the bath.

Why has no soap been used in that bath, where is the overflow? If that is you, I hope you are not a girl.
I would be in the shower like half as long as I am if my hair wasn't so long. I do enjoy my shower time. It's a great place to think and mumble the same lyric of a song over and over and over...

Ever since having a baby though, I swear, every single time in the shower I am SO SURE I can hear a baby crying (and my "baby" is a toddler now, so it isn't her). I guess even ghosts need to shower.

Please tell me you are not referring to the piccy above you when saying about the length of your hair.
People/animals still need to bathe regularly. It's not like some civilized type thing. 🙄

Do you regard dead people as being civilised? They don't bathe and the ones that do don't boast about it!
Do people really take 20 minute showers!? I do 10 at the most and that's when I wash my hair, which isn't everyday (I have hair down to my mid/low back)

Is that one ten minute shower or ten one minute showers?

Exactly what I thought! I have lived on mainly tank water the last 15 years or so. 20 minutes is downright greedy.

Its only the last few months that I moved to a house with a functioning water system, and in the lease we are only supposed to take 4 minute showers - that is on town main water supply. The hot water system only lasts 20 minutes or so anyway. The ads on TV tell us 4 minutes is all we are allowed in this state.

Even with horses and 2 showers a day - it took less than 20 minutes. My hair is extremely thick though - so I cant wash it more than once a week or it gets super dry. And I skimp on shaving most of the time 😛

Isn't it bad for your skin to shower every day? I tend to shower every day because I'm all sweaty but if I'm not doing anything I will skip it a day. My skin hates me at the best of times.

Yes. And people spend all sorts on soaps and moisturisers, that simply, only harm.

I went through hell with my face. The doctors wanted me on horrid drugs to "fix" it after giving chemicals that burned and stripped it. The beutition people insisted on that needle thing? You know where they burn the pours? 100's of needles in the face per session. Micro derm abrasion, honey and asprin facials, god everything available my mother put me through. The doctors kept saying it wasnt clean with acne, gave expensive washes, I had large cysts that had to be drained with a scalpel .. turns out acne was a result of my face being burnt by their crap. Yes, too clean.

Guess what fixed it? Soapfree lotion and kosmea rosehip oil (literally 3 drops). A lady on a horse forum clued me in. But that costs less than $20 a month, can be done at home and doesnt hurt.
So lets not promote it 😉

I know I smell if I go days without a shower, and if I am home alone, I really dont care. But if I go out, especially to an appointment, I tend to take the 2 or 3 minutes to freshen up for their sake.

Usually our bodies know what they're doing it we leave them to it lol

I went through the same thing with my face. Finally figured out that less is best. All that money wasted on ~special~ products.

It probably is but I work out almost every day, so I get sweaty and stinky very quickly and I need to be clean. I hate smelling bad. I honestly think I have a phobia of BO....

Wait I'm a bit lost here (not for the first time), but what does the Video Gaming have to do with the washing/Showering?

I normally spend about ten mins in the shower, three or four times a week. The other days I just have washes which I think is fine.

Yesterday it was 33 celsius with a heat index of 37 so being outside period you got sweaty and stinky quick.

I do not miss summer. I am loving having a jacket on, it doesnt happen often.

But my feet are cold. They arnt used to much more than thongs.

No one needs to spend 20 minutes a day showering but everyone would benefit from 20 minutes of showering a week. (Spread out would be best)
