Since a lot of us are from all over the world, I'm curious as to everyone's views on Americans. Rant and rave to your hearts content!

I can give you my impression of the Canadian perspective on America.

The world hockey championships will be coming up this summer. We Canadians will of course be cheering for Canada. If the Canadians get knocked out, we'll cheer for America.

errr...i do't think that's such a good idea...everyone here (dispite beying amaerican or not) has always been nice to me, and i don't want to offend or hurt anyone...but the view, and prespective that we (my country) have of americans are not that good... most of the news about you we have, are related to G.Bush and the Iraque war, i think i better stop here.

Well, I don't know what I possibly could contribute to this thread (Since I myself, Live and am proud to be an American), however I just wanted to add something. You can't really classify 'Americans' into one group, as "Veiws on Americans" is not correct (In my opinion) since everyone in America is diverse in every sort of way. Whether it be their race, sex, religion, or simple veiws on life. Everyone is differrent and special in one way shape or form, and as for the Iraq War and George Bush, not everyone likes him either. Including some Americans, so I think its safe to say you reall'y can'y 'Veiw' Americans as a whole, since EVERYONE is so diverse- Which is my opinion, is one of America's greatest traits 😀

^Yup, My 2 Cents 😛

I can't speak for fellow Americans, but I won't be offended by anything you guys say. I'll probably agree with you.

Edit: I'll go ahead and clarify..by "Americans", I just meant the overall stereotype or what have you of Americans, and the perception the media portrays in other countries. I agree...we're all too different to be classed into one group. I'm sure other people realize that, too. Or, I at least hope they do.

I'm an American and proud of it, I just have to ignore the fact that Bush is our current president....

Hey I'm interested in what you guys view Americans as...I know there are alot of bad stereotypes for Americans. I won't get offended, although I don't know about anyone else...

this was my point, i don't want to disrespect anyone..and if i am i'm sorry, but the thread asked what was the opinion and view of the americans in general... i'm just being honest, that the general oppinion in my country is not very good about you is somewhat "you think you're better than everyone, so you do whatever you want, don't caring about the consequences..."..
But you have a lot of good things, like you produce some of the best shows there are..

Is this really worthwhile thread? It is trully unfair to put the rest of the BB non american members on the spot by asking such a loaded question.

I would hope the board members have the sense not to attack others and their opinions....I didn't mean for the non-americans to be put on the spot. It was just a curiousity thing, what the general consensus is when it comes to Americans in general...If anyone feels uncomfortable responding, then no worries...don't respond. 🙂

mire, trustno1 is right when she talks about the stereotype of American.

Ok, first, I love americans & I wanna visit ur country so all I will say is what I know about stereotype in my country, mostly used by anti-americans. (btw, I mostly try to I don't wanna hurt anyone, I merely tell you facts since you asked it. Btw, I already know what ppl say about french but I'd like what you guys think about us. Like we are said to be arrogant, what ar the other stereotype?
Ok, for Americans:

Americans according to french ppl are a very inegalitarian society in which you can find the best & the worst.
Like, everyone is fond of american movies, but meanwhile many ppl are against the fact that USA movie's firm is overwhelming all other kind of movie.
I think it's sad that you don't have (or hardly) foreign movies released in theater btw, coz there are really good ones.

Americans are said & I think everyone will agree on this, to be very patriotic. That's not really a bad thing, just something very surprising to us, coz we are not like that. To see flag everywhere & to learn that pupils sings the hymn each day... just weird, lol, but funny. Sometimes too much tho, like when you know that in every american movies you will see the flag at least 3 times, some feel like USA wanna impose itself.

The biggest stereotyp is that Americans are fat (that's the first thing an anti-american will tell you). Btw, in all countries ppl are becoming fatter so that's not really a great argument ::eyes::

oh, & of course there is the usual mock at Bush (soz but on this point I agree, vote Kerry !!!!!!!!!!!!!!) & we are stunned to see the power of media, coz, media are powerful everywhere but there... gosh, it's freaky!

Oh, about Bush I got a good one, which refers to 9/11 (told by someone in N-Y)soz for the bad translation :

This is Bush visiting a Junior High School. He told pupils about the Iraki war & how it was necessary to fight & so on. When he is done with telling everything, he asks if there are any questions.
A little boy, Mike, raise the hand & says :
- I have 2 questions : Where is Oussama Bin Laden
& where are the massive destruction weapons?
Just when he has finished to ask the questions, the bell rings for the break & all kids go out in the playground.
When the break is over, the pupils come back in class & Bush asks again if there are any questions.
A kid, in the back of the classroom raise the hand & says :
- Yes, I have 4 questions. Where is Oussama Bin Laden, where are the massive destruction weapons, why does the bell rings 20 minutes earlier than usually & where is Mike?

ok, I hope I didn't hurt anyone & I hope to hear answer from you all. It'll be good to me to have your argument for me to tell them when I meet anti-american coz so far I've got my own argument but it'll be good to have more, 🙂

LOL Frenchy - good joke.

Back on topic - I think Americans in general are great. Warm-hearted, welcoming and generous. At least the ones in the tourism/hospitality industry are 😉 Only kidding, I've really liked most of the Americans I've met. I only have a problem with your leaders. Then again, I don't much care for our leaders either🙂

Bush is their president; there isn't much I can say that wouldn't offend them.

Yeah, most of Americans I met were so nice as well. No wonder why I go only in American forums & sites.

But everyone know that Bush didn't win the election fairly & that his election was most of a odd thing, so I don't see how they could feel offended?

Btw, I heard Bush got more vote lately, Nooooooooo, ppl vote kerry plz, you don't realize how awful it would be to have Bush once more !

I live in America but I can't say that I wouldn't wanna live anywhere else because I've never been there before to know. I'm really kinda bored with the whole Bush thing. He's taking up a spot on the news that could be showing another topic, like how I'm the best person ever. I don't know. I think it would depend on where you are. I mean, this year I learned about countries all over the world. One country in the middle east has a harsh punishment law. For example: if you steal something, they cut off your hands. I know that doesn't happen in America and if it did the person would probably be locked up for the rest of their life. I'm not putting down the middle eastern culture, nor am I saying they still do that because I'm actually not sure if they still do that, I'm just saying we do things differently. But don't all places do some things differently than the others? That's what different people/cultures/governments do. Each place has its good and its bad. I think America is great and the only thing I'd change is the driving law... *looks out at the car sadly*

I like America, looking in form the outside,I've never been so can't comment.....I like the fact that's it's got the best and the worst in the world in the same place!!There's no place like it and it's endlessly fascinating to me....As for Americans, never met any!!! 🙂

Most of the Americans that i have met have been really nice and i have been there a few times (in fact i was born there lol 😀)
But i also really dont like Bush for the whole Iraq thing(or Blair for that fact) so i just wont comment on him at all.
I dont like to sterotype people so i find it hard to comment on the American people as a whole but i can say from the ones that i have met that they are funny, warm-hearted and kind!! 😀.

i like americans, i wanna marry an american(any takers!lol)
i think they are a bit 2 patriotic, they seem to be more outgoing and pushy to get what they want, but other than that, americans are fine.

just 1 question, what do americans have against canadians?
and vice versa.

once again, i'm sorry if i was missunderstood, i wasen't trying to offend anyone.. i was trying to explain that the only news we've got here from you are ussually a bad thing about politics, so that's kind of unfair to the people, since all americans i met were nice..puople should be categorizized by their poplitic leader...portugal prime minister sucks..his nickname is "weasel" amoung others way worse...so if we were to categorisise portuguese people they would all be weasels..
my point is, i think the real america don't appear in the news, because it's always covered up by politics..and it's bad--

I think it's jealousy - both ways😉🙂 I think they love each other really - it's like a good-natured sibling rivalry thing.

I also like most of the Canadians I've met btw (before killergardengnome🙂 starts to work that old weather mojo on me😛)

I think most Americans are relly nice...I'd love to live there someday but from my country's perspective it's a bit different..Even tho Poland supported America in Iraq(with which I disagree)and most European citizens have no problem with visiting the US we still need visa to go there. Bush promised Polish president a few things: financial help, improving the whole visa situation, investing here etc. I still need to go to my capital, wait 5,6 hours to see someone who's going to decide whether I can go to America, pay 120$ for visa and I still can be made go home from the US airport...

But overall I'm quite positive bout Americans🙂
