Views on Americans

Those handful of soldiers do not even deserve to be called Americans. They make the excuse that they were not breifed on the Geniva Convention is stupid and empty. You learn it in school here. If you take US History you learn everything about it!!!!

I am ashamed of them as Americans and human being they should have known better. I hate them for it. I don't care if they were terrorists!!!! You can't just sit there torture them without remourse. They should have known better. All they did was make the world hate us more!!!!

I feel sorry for those prisoners and I feel for them. We had a debate about it in Speech class and this girl in my class said she laughed when she heard about it. I put her in her place.

As torture goes, this was mild. Doesn't make it better. And don't hate them for doing it. They were misguided, and after their punishment, they will deserve another chance. If it wasn't this incident something else would have made the US look bad. But consider this...where is the outrage in the world community, and indeed in the Arab world, at the way that young American was butchered? Are the Arab nations seaching tirelessly for the perpetrators and pledging to punish them to the full extent of the law? I haven't seen more than mild disgust that it was actually filmed, and no more. The adversary in this conflict has shown itself...and it's gonna get worse before it gets better.

I was disgusted when I found out about the abuse of Iraqi soldiers. I haven't yet formed an opinion on who is truly at fault in all this - I'm waiting until all the information available is brought to light. The whistleblower had a lot of guts to bring this into the open. I commend him. A lot of people were saying he shouldn't have uncovered that whole mess, because of the possible reprecussions, but if people were to find out later that America covered this up it'd be even worse. True, Iraq and other nations do far worse to captured Americans, but it's up to us to set an example of how things should be. I don't agree with the war, but I don't like how the media jumps on every tidbit of information that shows the war in a bad light. It seems more like glamourized gossip than actual serious, informative reporting.

KD my man, usually we sink up on these things but there is no such thing as mild torture. And even if there was this wasn't it. At one point the us troops held a lighter to the penis of one of the captives. That certainly isn't mild. these people were sick excuses for human beings. They don't deserve to wear that uniform and if i had it my way they would be in prison till their old and gray.

Nice topic. Not at all inflamitory,

There's Pro-American, Pro-Torture.

and...

There's Pro-International, Pro-Terrorisim.

Loaded question much?

As a Canadian I have to say that this could go any which way. Whether the right decision is the "Bush" direction or otherwise depends on the history books.

Sadam was wrong, Period.

What can the US do now... that's the question... and they put themselves in the position where they need to give the answer.

Who knows?

Right now, I respect the US. They have problems. Deal with them and from a foreign standpoint I'll move on.

Canada has it's problems. In the end we (and I) will see.

Wow.... far too serious for the user name Happy! Still, I stand by my response.

And I don't disagree with you on this issue much either! My point was that the media seems to be stuck on the gross, disgusting, yet non-lethal torture of prisoners. Yes, the US soldiers who did it deserve prison time, but not hatred...and there seems to be a decided lack of outrage at the incident with the head (not to trivialiaze it too much...). I don't get that. There seems to be a school of thought that says that somehow this was deserved retribution or something like that.

My point, to extend it, isn't that the torture was acceptable in any way, but to point out the hypocracy of those who have used it to demonize the US in the present conflict. xtrustno1x is right about the US trying to show how it is done...they should. Breeches of conduct should be punished. But to condemn all and the mission they are on for the actions of a few...shouldn't happen. And where is the world's anger at the butchering of a non-combattant US citizen? Hypocracy to the max there. America gets nailed when they do wrong, but when they are victimized the world shrugs and says, in effect "You asked for it?" That's just as disgusting to me.

Concerning Berg (the decapitated man), what exactly is the story behind his being there? I've heard conflicting reports from his family and the government about the whether the U.S. Army actually detained him for some time for some reason or another prior his death.

I've reviewed what I've already written, and I've done some research on the torture being done...and it is barbaric. I thought it was confined to humiliation only, which is bad enough, but decidedly survivable. Some of this stuff is not very survivable. Thus, I call again for the soldiers who did it to pay. However I want to restate that this should not be used as a reason to demonize the US or American troops in Iraq.

Mr. Berg, from the accounts I've seen, was a contractor in the country to fix stuff. And he was detained for a check of his credentials and released...the US troops apparently had no compelling reason to keep him, either for wrongdoing or for his own safety.

I won't go into the political stuff surrounding this issue, except to say that all sides are using a spin on the incidents to make their points...none of them will be dealing in the absolute truth...it is the truth only as they see it, so read and watch carefully and be aware of any attempts at manipulation. Be alertly cynical as to the motives of any reporting or statements from politicians.
