Being someone who works in an academic situation, this scares the hell out of me.

If you don't already know, earlier this morning and afternoon, 30 Virginia Tech students were shot and killed by an unknown gunman. He shot up a dorm, and then two hours later shot up a classroom building.

Check any news network to get more information if you need it.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family members of the victims.

Saw this earlier and I agree SB it scares the hell out of me too!

I'm work in a school and sometimes I worry about the security aspects of it.

I found a link to a news site here.

My thoughts and prayers go to all who are involved and who are working on the sick and injured.

As someone who just recently went through a horrible mess of tragedy, I pray for all the families, and everyone who may be connected to every individual in this rampage. At some point you just don't know anything.

^^ OMG, how awful! That's scary!

My heart goes out to all of them; students, faculty, victims and families. What a huge tragedy.

Sick people in this world...

Is it weird for me to be used to it by now? Not that it's a good thing.. But Columbine happened when I was in 4th grade and then there's been another school shooting almost every year.

My thoughts and well wishes go to the family members of the victims, students, staff, officers... etc... And more importantly my thoughts go out to my family as my cousin, Kristina, goes there. If she were dead I think we would have heard about it by now. She's an air head so probably isn't thinking to call me... But here's hopin...

you know,
mass killing for the hell of it?
that's just wrong.
even if he had some other motive for doing it,
theres no way in hell that he could have thought
it was right any second he was doing it.
a quote from One Tree Hill basically explains what im feeling right now..
well, two actually..

Does this darkness have a name? This cruelty, this hatred, how did it find us? Did it steal into our lives, or did we seek it out and embrace it? What happened to us? That we now send our children into the world like we send young men to war... Hoping for their safe return... But knowing that some will be lost along the way. When did we lose our way? Consumed by the shadows, swallowed whole by the darkness.

Lucas: Do you think there's a heaven Skills?
Skills: Do I think there's a heaven?
Lucas: Yeah, you know, pearly gates, angels...
Skills: I dunno about all that, maybe some chrome gates and some freaky angels. Naw, but I do think there's somethin' else out there, and I do think whatever we do in this world matters in the next.
Lucas: You know before you came in I was thinking about Edwards, and how he could take Keith's life.
Skills: Look, he wasn't right dawg, Jimmy was sick.
Lucas: So if that's true, is heaven the kind of place that'll hold that against someone? 'Cause if not Jimmy's a victim and right now, in your world beyond this one, Jimmy and Keith are in the same place, and I can't figure out what kind of place that would be.

that was an amazin episode
This is sad. I heard news updates at work every time I got into a car to park, heh. Unfortunately I'm not surprised at this, and it's hard to actually feel sad. With all the terrible things that happen all the time I've become desensitized, and sorta trained myself not to care, as there's nothing I can do. And I'm a very caring person, so that says something.

I hear ya.
I'm watching Dateline right now...and it's going to be very interesting dealing with the security break down and decision making by school administration and police.

They didn't immediately shut down the school after the first shooting... just lock downed a few buildings. And it's reported that it only took about 5-10 mins to get from the dorm over to the engineering building, so what the heck was going on that took the gunman two hours to get over there? In my opinion, that's plenty of time to have avoided this tragedy.

It's just awful.

They're actually starting to think there was a second shooter now. That's why they're testing the two guns found for finger prints and stuff.

Luckily, my cousin is fine. Ironically, she and her mother left early this morning (she barely avoided it) to go to someone's funeral. Sucks that she's going to have to come back from one only to go to probably others. At least she's safe though. Load off my shoulders!

What a horrible day for those people. My thoughts are with them. I really can't imagine what they are going through.

I don't want to digress into a rant, as that would be very inappropriate, but you US guys really have to reconsider your right to bear arms, when it so tragically and regularly contravenes the basic right to life.

Yeah, the debate will never go away, but...I don't see that ever happening, short of a nuclear event on US soil or something. Martial law declared, etc. That sounds kind of out there I know, but truly...not gonna happen, IMO. There just would never be enough widespread political will to overcome the hurdles of repealing an amendment. Though there are loads of restrictions on certain classes of weapons, background checks, waiting periods, etc.

First of all , I would like to say thank you for the concern of our community here in Blacksburg and surrounding areas. This is indeed a very tragic event and certainly not something that we want to be in the history books for. Blacksburg is a peaceful and lovely community and Tech is an awesome school. My niece is a part time student there but was not on campus (thank goodness), my boss' daughter is a student there and was on campus at the time of the shooting, she was not injured but a friend of hers was shot in the chest and in stable condition now. Please keep her in your prayers, her name is Allison. Secondly, I would like to ask that before you criticize the local authorities stop and think about how you would have handled the situation yourself. There are still many questions to be asked and answers that may never come. For now the concern should be for the victims and their families, the survivors and how this community will heal.

Speaking of the authorities, I was just reading a story at MSNBC about the tragic events. The comment so far from the police on scene has been that they acted on the information they had at the time. They didn't have hours (and the benefit of hindsight) to reflect on what they should do. They made snap decisions, based on the needs of the moment. There's nothing wrong with that, imo.....I think they did the best they could have with the information available to them.

SD, thank you for your very personal and touching statement. You are the soul of class! I will keep Allison in my thoughts......

Thank you!
God, what pisses me off more than anything is Jack Thompson's pathetic response to the tragedy.

In case some of you aren't familiar with him, he's a crackpot lawyer who blames every bad thing on video games and has been trying for years to get all of them banned and replaced with stuff like Ratchet and Clank.

Well, surprise surprise, he's blaming this on video games too. It's obvious that he thinks of the death of these kids as nothing more than a helpful opportunity to further his intentions to cripple the video game industry.

Speaking of authorities, again, my teacher brought up a very good point today. There are roughly 35,000 students on campus (i think that's the number). She said it's impossible to just shut down something with that many people. If they just sent the word out "THERE'S SOMEONE WITH A GUN AH!" then students would have just fled and it could heave either been worse or who knows.

I just read that they identified the shooter, but no word if there was a second one... Or did I miss something?

No, the current consensus is that he acted alone. VA Tech has roughly 25,000 full-time students, not to mention faculty, support people, and part-time students. So, the total on campus or trying to get there is probably close to the 35k your teacher mentions.....that's a logistical nightmare. I don't see how they could have done any better than they did.
