i believe 100% that whether or not americans have the right to bear arms, he would have still gotten them and done what he wanted.

(not to mention the fact that he wasnt even an american citizen, which i already see as causing problems down the road.)

It is with a heavy heart that I announce this. My oldest son, Chris, just found out that one of his friends from last year was one of the victims of the VA. Tech tradgedy. The young man's name was Henry Lee and was a freshman at Tech, he graduated from William Fleming last year. Right now my son is rather inconsolable as we await word on the arrangements. This is such a senseless thing!!!

It appears to have gotten worse. Now, it seems that this was heavily premeditated...the gunman sent a package to the news networks, so he was obviously planning this.

(And, he was a legal person in the US...he had a green card)

I didn't hear the thing about his message. What's that all about?

I did see one of his videos tho. It made me real mad. He was like, "You pushed me to do this. I had no other choice." and I'm thinking two teachers and multiple students tried to help him, but he rejected it. It's his fault for what he did and he's a loser who shouldn't be blaming it on anyone else but himself.

It was the same thing as the video except I herd it on the radio, missed the start of the news story and thought it was just a sound recording!
 
NBC has been getting a lot of heat for (almost immediately) airing the video manifesto that fell into their lap - despite the pleading, begging of many of the parents not to. I'm a free press guy all the way, but I think NBC's protestations, rationalizations about hoping to "learn something" from airing the footage was...whatever. "Ratings coup" was probably the deciding factor. Hmm. Yet another topic for debate I guess.

Press freedom, and the public's need to know on the one side. On the other, you've got further emotional pain for families, friends. Plus basically giving the psycho the publicity he wanted, and...theoretically promoting an inspirational new template for whack jobs who want their 15 nanoseconds of fame on TV. And immortality on the Internet. I dunno. What do you do there if you're NBC?

You always get copycat a-holes after this kind of thing. How many threats and scares have there been so far? I know they shut down part of the U of M campus in Minnesota after a bomb threat on Wednesday.

I think they should have made his videos available online. That way parents and what not can control if their kids see it or not. Actually it sounds like a not good idea now that I think about it...

Well, people are being retarded from this whole thing. I read on AOL that 11 other states (12 including mine) have been having school shooting/bomb threats at their schools. Rider University, where my brother goes and its like a hour and a half from me, had some kid hanging out a window with a bb gun like as niper thinkin he was all funny. He'll probably be expelled and charged. Then in North Brunswick, which is like 30 minutes from me, a bomb threat was called in. A lot of the time its kids trying to be "funny" or make a joke, but it's really not a laughing matter.

In my opinion, the media made a bad choice by airing the rantings of a homicidal maniac. All they gave him was the attention that he had been craving. NBC did right by contacting the authorities about the package, but you damn well know that they made copies of everything before turning it over, how else did they get it? I would find it hard to believe that the FBI and Virginia State Police told them that it would be ok to make copies for the evening news. For me its a personal issue, I do not want to see it or hear his voice ranting about the "rich kids, hedonism and debauchery". He went to VA. Tech, its not a back water hole in the wall school... they are a nationally known university and it isnt cheap to attend.With the cost of college , how was he able to attend if he was sooo poor? So I guess that throws his "rich kids" bs out of the water. Personally, I think that the news should have announced that they received this package but due to the content it would not be aired on national tv. They had better ways to report new information about the issue and it didnt include seeing him with a gun pointed at a camera or a knife held to his own throat. Did I turn the news off when this came on? YES!! Unfortunately we have been bombarded with these images, lets concentrate on the healing.Perhaps I am just to close to this issue to look at it clearly, but by giving him the press coverage and attention he obviously desired, we let him win and justify his actions.It just brings more copy cats out of the woodwork and cause more communities undue hardships with the fear it instills.
 
I'm not sure I agree with you about bringing out more copycats. I agree with some of the other things you have said.

Personally I don't really understand what the point was to release his videos. I mean I haven't given it too much thought, but I don't understand what purpose it serves? Other than to boost news sales. Am I being cynical with this? What was the point in releasing the video footage?
 
There were at least 3 fake bombthreats and fake murder threats in colleges in Minnesota this week, including one at the University Of Minnesota where Princess_Zombie attends, but of course, after being locked in a small room for 6 hours, they find out that some sick twisted punk who didn't want to go to school called in a fake threat.

Yeah, but how much did they reveal? From a brief article I skimmed through earlier, it seemed like they just chopped the footage and released brief moments. How does that give us insight? That gives us what the news company wants to give.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I find the whole circus around it to be quite disgusting. There are much much worse things happening around the world. Things that don't get any news coverage.

It's like when Americans or Brits complain that our soldiers are dying in Iraq, and we should get them home. How many Iraqis are dying. Is it the case that American or British lives are worth more?

We're all human beings, first and foremost.

Turns out the killer himself, the obscene amount of ammunition he was able to obtain and expend or the failure to act on the reams of warnings issued by his lecturers and fellow students... none of these things are really to blame.

It is of course, computer games' fault. Counterstrike in this instance. I love Britain, but by Christ do I hate their newspapers.

I hope thats a joke. Anyway they seem to be trying to blame this one on the movie Oldboy. Ridiculous.
 
It is rediculous that anyone would blame his actions on a movie, tv show or game (whether computer or video). That would be like me blaming the stairs if I fall down them and break a leg, it would be absolutely my fault for not paying attention at where I was going. The only person to blame for this tradgedy is the shooter! I am sick and tired of the media and the so called professionals trying to make any other sense of his actions. He had a Mental Incapacity and he made a conscious choice to handle his problems the way he did. Bottom line....

As far as gun control, the laws in Virginia could be changed to slow down an immediate sale of a firearm, on this I agree. BUT.. anyone that wants a weapon will find a way to obtain one, whether legally or not. It's not the gun that kills people but the person behind it pulling the trigger.

Scholarship? Since he wasnt a white, middle class american, he could potentially have a full-ride.



ps. im not on his side at all, just wanted to point that out. i think he's a disgusting excuse for a human. i just figured i would add another perspective.
 
Richness has nothing to do with attending college. So, he might not have been from a family that was well off... he might have been there on scholarship, or had student loans. Probably the student loans. That's what a lot of students have to do who cannot afford college.

(Just adding to the conversation about how he afforded school if he hated the 'rich kids')
