Feel free to post whatever you'd like. Proposals, pitches, individual scenes...

No full scripts, please.

This is one big brainstorming thread. Spam will not be tolerated. If anyone spams, Buffy Summers will go to your house and break all your prized personal possessions. And probably kick your grandmother, too.

Let's rock. 😎

Hi, DarioDevil. Since I was planning on doing my own version of S8, I've already come up with a backstory to explain what had gone down since Chosen. Now that I'm officially joining this project, I've decided to contribute that backstory here:
The 8th season of BtVS takes our heroes from the small town to the big city, as they relocate to the town of Ashtabula, Ohio, the site of a second Hellmouth, to resume their fight against evil and begin to build new lives in a world where Buffy and Faith are no longer unique. With discreet financial backing from Angel, Giles has established a headquarters for the new Watcher's Council and, with help from Willow, is busily scouring the globe in search of survivors of the old WC who are willing to help him rebuild the organization. Despite knowing that it is no longer an obligation for her, Buffy has continued to fulfill her duties as a Slayer, helping Faith and Wood to protect the people of Ashtabula from dark threats and to train those Slayers who chose to remain in Cleveland rather than leave to return to their families or travel the world. Dawn and Andrew have found themselves being called on to help Willow and Giles in their search for Watchers, and Xander has taken to helping out as well (fighting with Buffy, Faith, and Wood, training with younger Slayers, and doing research for Willow and Giles) while also searching for employment in the city and the surrounding area.

I'd like to contribute to this thread by attempting to foresee problems that will eventually require solutions. Here are some suggestions.

1. You're going to need the active co-operation of a moderator to physically organize this forum.

2. You're going to need some consistent rules as to what the script format you use should look like. I've browsed script formatting used in Carpe Noctum, and other forums. Different fanfic writers seem to have different ideas as to what script formatting looks like. Someone should write a tutorial for those unfamiliar with script format, suggesting the general consensus as to what the rules of script formating are.

3. You're going to need a reader or readers to spot and fix the more glaring errors of formatting, grammar, spelling and such.

4. This idea will have problems unique to it, because it is not commercial. Each person is going to have his or her own idea as to what he wants to say. You can't just say, "do it my way or no paycheck". It might be better to leave a certain amount of room in the story arc for people to go off in their own directions. The problem here is you will have many different characters doing many different things. It could get chaotic. I suggest a story arc where many different characters can be doing many different things in different places, with their story lines meeting in different spots throughout, and all remaining characters meeting in one final story arc at the end of the season for one large confrontation.

5. Continuity will be tough, because we don't know where this season of Angel is going to leave the Buffy characters in real time. Buffy for example may or may not be in Europe as we speak. I suggest a story line for this VS 8 which exists between the time of Buffy 7's ending and Angel 5's beginning. In this way it should be possible to connect the two stories at the end. It might be a good idea to give the job of watching for continuity errors as affects the past, present, and future of the Buffyverse to one specific person

DW, that's a good proposal, but it also limits the contributions others on the board can make. Perhaps someone else has an idea for an episode, but they don't want to base it in Ohio, for example. I should have clarified this thread is for basic ideas, a few sentences outlining a concept for an episode, scenarios, short scenes between characters, etc..

However, thank you for posting, it is interesting, and I'd like the other members of the board to weigh on how they feel about your ideas.

I am aware of this. I have yet to hear from any of the mods aside from Buffy Summers herself regarding this project. I would like very much to work with one of them.

That is an excellent idea. Again. Thank you, N4H. I will be in touch.

Well, tasks such as these should be handled by the writers, however, all of us who are involved with Writing and Production will have the opportunity to read drafts of scripts, so (hopefully) this shouldn't be a problem.

Agreed, this really has the potential to be like wrestling a tornado. However, the reason I want to assemble a group of Producers is to take all of the ideas that we are provided by all of us on the board, and organize them in a way that would work. Blend them together, tweak them, etc.. Simply taking everyone's ideas as is and putting them on paper would indeed be chaotic... fun (and headache-inducing) to read, but chaotic nonetheless. 😀

The group of people who will be spearhead this will work together to make this project work.

Continuity will be tough. Honestly, this was not considered until you brought it up (once again, right there with the ideas)... I am going to be passing on this question for the moment, as I can think of a few solutions, but I don't want to committ to anything just yet. I would rather get this moving and get people contributing ideas first, then worry about how they would relate to Angel Season 5.

I have been keeping an eye on the forum, closing / moving threads etc where necessary. I asked Dario to take over this project because I do not have enough time to give it the attention it has come to need.

🙂

I'd like to address a couple of things, mainly my thoughts on the whole continuity issue and some concerns/questions I have about the exact structure of this project.

It sounds like you've already come up with a structure for the project to follow, but I would like to offer some input regarding a structure nonetheless. Since I am already producing/helping to produce another BtVS-related fanfiction project, I am of the opinion that the BEST way to ensure a successful and cohesive project is to emulate the real BtVS structure, with the project's Production Staff being responsible for outlining the overall plot for the season and then assigning certain episodes that contribute to said plot to the writers, while also allowing the writers the creative freedom to contribute and sound off on ideas for individual episodes. If we are going to allow board members to contribute ideas, there should be some type of limit placed on said contributing and some sort of guidelines should be set up. This will help to avoid confusion and an overabundance of ideas that could make the Production Staff's job all that much harder. Also, I agree that the writers and Production staff will end up handling a lot of the editing, but I also believe that an Editing staff should also be established as a safeguard. This staff can/should include a person or persons who have a good grasp of Buffyverse dialogue, in order to avoid complaints that our dialogue is not realistic to the characters (this has happened with the other project I am involved with).

See my above comments regarding project structure.

I don't personally believe that we need to be concerned with what happens on ANGEL this season at all, because trying to do so creates unnecessary headaches and restricts creativity. I also don't think there are all that many ANGEL continuity issues we need to be concerned with beyond remembering that Spike is now on ANGEL and that, according to ANGEL, Buffy is/was in Europe.

On the matter of script layouts I have attached my English Homework (kinda odd thing but ah well) that I think is how a script should be structured, and I got it off websites. If not can we legally scan a few pages from the Buffy Script Books? Anyway the English is here: http://members.lycos.co.uk/ashsan/eng2.doc

I like the ideas brought up but I dont think it should be one writer per episode. The writers on the show wriite for a living, we write for fun and often have work/school so we cant write as much or as often.

If we have the entire seasonal story arc and most of the episodes planned out act-by-act BEFORE any of the writing begins, we should be able to put out weekly scripts, even with our RL obligations. I really think a meeting needs to be convened ASAP between those who have committed to this project so far (and any of those who have contributed ideas/suggestions so far who are so inclined to join us) to discuss things like the writing and production of the season, the structure of the season, the script format we want to use, and other such topics.

Also, I'd like to address nerd4hire's suggestion concerning the way we structure the seasonal story arc. Because we are trying to do a continuation of BtVS and not a spin-off, we cannot make any major changes to the overal structure of the series. This means that the majority of the season-wide story arc (and the majority of the episodes) needs to be grounded in a single, set location (such as the Ohio cities of Ashtabula or Cleveland). Individual episodes CAN take place in other locations, but it is imperative that we not deviate from the overall structure imposed by Joss Whedon regarding the series.

It won't be one writer per episode - it depends on how many writers we have their schedules, etc. This is essentially an organized hobby we've got here.

Indeed, that was the plan. As I have posted earlier, but I guess it's not clear. So, to clarify:

1) The teams are assembled. In the meantime, ideas are collected, both from team members and from posters on the board.

2) The ideas are organized by the team, into the overall season in general, and the episodes specifically.

3) The episode plots are assigned by the producers to the writers based on time/availability.

4) The episodes are posted in sequence on the board, for everyone to read. Comments and such are taken by the team, as are suggestions, and what can be worked in will be.

That is a good idea, however I, Hostile_17, and the moderators would appreciate it if you didn't say "us," the implication being that you are part of the Production team. Though we appreciate your enthusiasm and you clearly have experience in a project such as this, we would appreciate it if you did not "jump the gun" so to speak. I know you want to contribute as much as possible. I am going to be in contact tomorrow, we'll talk then.

I agree. We'll see what the rest of the board feels about this, and we'll play idea tennis. There are pros and cons to this approach.

The way I see, Buffy, Dawn, Xander, and Willow lost their home, alot of the season should focus them on trying to find a new one of course that will take some exploring for them. In the season premiere they are not going to stop Butt-Lake Ohio and say "Oh, I think we'll call this place home for the next couple of years". I mean yeah, a place to settle should be found sokmetime in the season, but I don't think them exploring for a while deviates at all from Joss's structure. Maybe making every episode stand alone and having no big bad or story arch that probably is dviating away from the original structure. But I don't think having the gang on the road for a little while does. And they never went away from Sunnydale because they always had a homebase, now they don't. Anyways, that's my rant.

Dariodevil, I'm sorry for "jumping the gun", as it were. I was under the impression that the Producer slots would be filled on a first come, first serve basis, and since I was one of those who volunteered to serve as a Producer in that other thread, I immediately fell into that role.
