Just a reminder that visitor messages are not private messages - the rules of the board apply.

I'm starting to see an increasing trend of inappropriate comments. If I have to remove the vm's, I will.
 
I have a question about this whole set up actually.

The purpose.

I've read peoples walls who I am not 'friends' with so what is the point of the 'friends' function.

I mean I guess its nice to have that number for some people, but once you accept, what then?

I assumed that you had to be friends with someone to 'view their wall' or something.

Is this how the thing is meant, or is it something that is going to be built on?

You have the option to limit your visitor messages to your friends and the moderators only. (Select "Limit usage of Visitor Messages to Contacts and Moderators" in your Options.) The friends thing also comes to play in that it replaces your Buddy list and if we had the photo album feature enabled you could limit who could view them by your friends list. It's also vbulletin wasting it's time trying to make vb more like facebook, but I digress.

All of the staff can view everyone's visitor messages. (That's not a setting on my end, that's how it comes set up.) They're essentially profile comments, they're not meant to be instant messages.

But I don't care if your profile is set to friends only - that's no excuse for rude and inappropriate behavior and I don't want to see it. Things are getting out of hand around here and I want it to stop.
 
Oh dear. If someone goes on to somebody's profile and reads a visitor message that they don't like, why can't they just go away?

Don't be silly, that would make too much sense.
Because that is not the point, the same consideration should be given to visitor messages as general board posts.

Not the point? How can something directly related to the nature of what's being discussed be irrelevant? Visitor messages are not the same as forum posts by a long stretch; by clicking on somebody's profile and perusing their conversations, you have to brace yourself for the fact that their conversations with others will reflect their personality more accurately, if you don't like that personality, stop reading their conversations.
 
There is never any reason to post nasty comments about other members in visitor messages. In fact, they shouldn't be posted anywhere on the board.

On the same trail, you if you don't like the rules of the board, you can stop coming to the board.

That's entirely senseless, I understand that the final decision rests with the admins, but there's no reason why we shouldn't at least give our differeing opinions. More importantly, I don't see how it's on the same trail as my comment; my comment was that we should all give each other the freedom to say what we want on our own profiles. Your comment is that nobody should have the freedom to even give a different opinion on the ruling that we should have no freedom to say what we want on our own profiles. It's a fairly loose connection you've stumbled upon.
 
As Buffy Summers has already stated, visitor messages do not give you the freedom to leave nasty or inappropriate comments for other members on their profiles. Whether the whole boards can see them or not. That goes for the whole board, that is not what this place is about.

No one is stopping you from expressing your opinions on matters you feel strongly about, but you can express opinions without being nasty, rude or ignorant of other peoples feelings.
 
Exactly, Looking Glass does have a point that if you don't like the rules of a place, there is nothing to keep you here.

Having said that, I think the misunderstanding is that you can't express your own opinion.
There is no stopping that, but that opinion doesn't have to contain words and personal attacks on members (thats what PM's are for - if you feel a need to actually rant about someone).

I know I have done my share of comments on VM's, but in fairness I didn't acknowledge that the rules of the open board extended to the VMs.

Ignorance is never an excuse, but now I know, I won't be doing it again.
 
Obviously if you insult and abuse someone you have a problem with over VM, then that is out of order and shouldn't be allowed, but see if two friends throw insults at each other in a joking way because it's how they greet each other, and they both know there is no ill intent or offence intended, is that okay? or still no?

EDIT: I realise you'd then have the problem of people just saying "i was only joking, i didn't mean it" even if they did, but still, you'd be able to tell the difference i think.
