Wait a sec, what does Tom Bombadil have to do with The First?

After rewatching season seven, here's one of many problems I have with it: Was it ever explained how Buffy's resurrection could possibly make her and the slayer line vulnerable? Did I miss it? This is apparently the reason The First finally took action, but I just don't see how Buffy coming back to life has anything to do with building an army of rehashed ubervamps.

I tend to have an easy time fanwanking, but I can't understand this one.

Or is it just another unexplained aspect of the 'verse (much like the race that Tom Bombadil of Lord of the Rings belonged to, in case you didn't read the books).

I have to admit, the title got me interested! Nice one!
Somehow, bringing Buffy back to life in Season 6 upset the balance of the universe, according to Botox's Eye, But I always had my doubts. Who could really put any faith in the ramblings of a floating eyeball chained down in a hell dimension? I think that it had something to do with global warming. Al Gore was behind the whole thing.

LOL! oh gosh...
Well, Buffy coming back screwed it up. I heard one or two explenations that sounded good, but i can't remember them that well. i guess it has to do something with buffy's slayer power "passing on" as she died, because she was dead and didn't need it anymore. but then she came back, not only a human, but a slayer again. assuming that the slayerpower is something that's added to potentials that makes them slayers, not that the power is dormant within and just needs to be turned on, one can assume that willow bringing buffy back, maybe even deliberatly making sure buffy came back with her powers, not without, somehow effected the slayer-spell, or the source of the slayers power. maybe a big chunk was ripped out.

another theory is there wasn't suppose to be two slayers. although buffy coming back from death the first time, through physical means, mouth to mouth, meant that there were two slayers, that was allowed, because it was "natural", a lopphole-thingy, maybe a there being two slayers in the world brought forth by magic, broke the balance. maybe the shadowmen and another force agreed on that there could only be one slayer in the world(would explain why they didn't make more) which meant that the first was made powerless? But then that deal was broken because one slayer too mich was made. buffy coming back the first time didm't register, but the second time did.

to give you better theories, i would have to rewatch that ep.

maybe it was that the urn was smashed amd buffy ca,e back a bit wrong that broke the balance. it was never really explained.

The predominant theory is that when Willow brought Buffy back in Bargaining, she made her The Slayer again. Not just A Slayer, like she was before. When she died in Prophesy Girl, the Slayer line passed on, making Kendra, then Faith, The Slayer. Buffy still had her powers, but if she died a new Slayer wouldn't be called. The line had passed on. But Willow's resurrection spell had to create an entirely new body for Buffy. According to Tara, Buffy was different on a molecular level. Plus, in Season 7 there's a lot of talk of Buffy's death bringing about a Potential's activation. This change, the wresting - or perhaps splitting - of the line from Faith was what Beljoxa's Eye was talking about.

But it's all theory. It's based on a sound foundation of canon fact, and isn't much of a leap, but it's never explicitly stated. Plus, there are many counter-arguments, though I don't find any particularly persuasive. It just makes sense if you think of it that way.

That's a great theory.

Btw, how is Tom's existence a unexplained aspect? I'll be re-reading the books in a while so it'll be good to know.

The biggest mystery about Tom is probably his immunity to the Ring, which is never explained by Tolkien. I guess I don't want to get too much into the "oldest and fatherless" on a Buffy forum, though. 🙂

So Buffy's return still makes it easier somehow to wipe out the Potentials. I still don't get the connection.
Fantasy logic. :drunk:

Did the omniscient eye expressly indicate that resurrecting Buffy made her "The" Slayer again? And wait, how does this have anything to do with the potentials? I'm overthinking this, huh?
