Ok, so far S5 has been adequate, but I just can't shake the feeling that there should be more. I guess I'm missing the multi-ep stories I've come to expect from Angel and Buffy. The "waiting-for-the-bad-guy-to-appear" happening in Wolfram and Hart is getting old, and I'd like a good old gritty 3-part arc please...something with a nasty bad guy, and maybe Dru...anyone else feel like the gang is just marking time, or is it just me?
 
I would also like to see 3prt arc,but I think they'll stick to one ep arcs as they are easier to follow...
 
i think are story arc are pretty much obselete now.

I remember when reading about season 5, they were going to take it episode at a time, and not have drawn out arcs. Does anybody else remember that?

Like, whatever was happening in one episode was going to get resolved in that very same episode.
 
yeah, i know what you mean, there needs to be a season 6 "big bad" instead of a new evil each episode
 
I don't know which is better or worse in terms of one-episode arcs: S1 or S5. I think what have really made the past seasons of Angel so exciting are the longer story arcs, which just aren't there anymore. The "monster of the week" short-story-arc episodes every week are making me lose some interest, but the show's still funny.

The gang is probably marking time. Every week is another filler ep! I miss the longer arcs.
 
Filler eps! Thanks slayerangel, that's exactly what they feel like! While I understand the writers trying to avoid the big, ponderous arcs of 5 or more eps, I don't see how a recurring bad guy would be a bad thing. He/she/it wouldn't even have to appear in consecutive eps. So far all the S5 stuff feels like "Earshot" (which I liked)...an ep that broke the main arc of S3 with the mayor and Faith.

Bring on a bad guy it will take some time and effort to beat!
 
The reason they are avoiding big arcs is that they are rating killers, they eliminate the casual audience and only the hardcore fans stay. And since Angel was in danger of cancellation they needed to attract more viewers, and one-story episodes and maybe a minor underlaying arc will have more chance to raise the ratings than a big arc.

If someone misses maybe 1 or 2 episodes because of the big arc they will be lost, not understand what has happened and maybe lose interest fast (if they are casual viewers).

Personally I dont care if its an arc or not, Im just glad as long as Angel or any form of Joss-Verse is on the air.
 
I agree, keep Angel on the air! But a recurring bad guy in the Ethan Rayne vein would be a bit more satisfying to the hardcore. You could script the eps in such a way as to make them stand alone, while giving a nod to an ongoing problem for the gang. Heck, at this point I'd settle for a good solid two-parter...
 
I enjoy the change. It's nice to have new stories every week instead of having one long story that doesn't end.
 
I'm happy there's anything to watch at all!!!!Sure longer arcs are sometimes more interesting,but I still love Angel....
 
There is a recurring story arc, underneath the single episodes - the consequences of Angel's decision in "Home", along with he and Spike vying for the Shanshu prophecy.
 
Things are definately gonna heat up b/c of this whole prophecy thing and the scene w/ Eve and Spike in the elevator(Lineage 5.7) held some foreshadowing for future events
 
I really like the way this season is going, and even though I like longer arcs better, I think having stand alones with this high quality is crucial to the shows. They can do longer arcs at the end of the season.
 
Yeah... what the last 3 posters said. In fact isn't the layout of this season of Angel starting to remind you of the structure of Buffy season 6, with what seems at first glance to be stand alones, but put together contains subthemes and subtext in layers pointing towards what will probably end as a multiple story arc tieing everything up.

It would be neat to actually see Ethan Rayne put in a appearance. He's great for one-shot stories of low-grade mayhem.

Although, as far a recurring bad guys, can I interest you in, oh, let's say...Drusilla?
 
You and Dru...I swear...a subtle obsession you have there LD...

I couldn't be happier with the way this season is going. I often fear they will do something to mess it up but in the end I put my faith in Joss and the rest of the team. I am just enjoying the comedy and the refreshhing change of pace this season has to offer. Bring it on!!!

Allycat-I agree that the eps are very well done...they're tight and well acted. If this gets another season of Angel, I'll gladly deal!

So, I guess I'll change my wish into one that is more along the lines of hoping that ME pulls all the threads together like they did in S6 and DIDN' T in S7.
 
Althogh I really liked this week's episode, I'm losing interest more and more by week. I really hope that the entire season is not going to be like this. If so, I doubt I'll make it to episode 22.
