WARNING!!! "Here You Have It" Virus

I just got this in my e-mail and thought that I should pass it on to the members here:


Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo , GMail, Hotmail , AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, Direct from both Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who has Access to the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled "Here you have it" If you open the file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful....'

Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, And the person who sent it to you will gain access to your Name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon . AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'.

PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS, And ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY!

THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY SNOPES.

BLEH, don't EVEN get me started on stupid microsoft! ¬.¬ Totally wrecked my computer with like the worst virus ever. This has happened to me twice aswell.

I don't need to pay a thousand bucks to have something to make me look and feel cool.

Neither do I. I just love Apple's build quality/battery life and slightly prefer OSX to Windows 7, although I do have that installed too.

Can I just recommend to Windows users that you uninstall all your anti-virus software, turn on Windows Firewall and then download Microsoft Security Essentials. It takes up almost no resources and is by far the most efficient antivirus software available. Plus it's free 😎

Well, as a fully paid-up member of the Mac supporters' club I'm not too worried about viruses but even we Apple users can be effected by numpties, as anyone who received mysterious messages from me on Facebook a while back can attest...as my account got compromised for a while 🙁
These kind of messages are usually hoaxes but WA has done exactly what I would do by checking it is real on Snopes, which is a very reliable source in my experience.

I've heard all of this Microsoft vs Mac and Microsoft vs Linux (?) argument for years, and never really understood it. Is Microsoft the only system that's susceptible to viruses for some reason? Or is it just that it's the most common system, therefore the largest amount of damage can potentially done by targeting it?

I think to get a virus onto a Mac it would have to be built for Mac and you actually have to allow it to connect and do whatever it's going to do.

Plus like you said Windows is so widespread it makes sense to go after that one.

A "friend" of mine who has a mac got a virus and took her computer to the genius bar where she was told she had a virus and they put some extra antivirus software on it and stuff. She was pissed and demanded to know why her mac (which she was told couldn't get any viruses ever) got a virus. She was told the same thing I tell every mac user who talks about how they can't get viruses... ALL electronics can get viruses... phones can, computers can... they all can. Someone just has to write the virus to do it. Some viruses that infect some things are a lot more difficult to write, but that doesn't mean they're impossible.
