The Inca princess, not the guy. (lol) That's what I picked up from how she talked about herself: being the only one that could defend her village...

So, WAS she a Slayer or am I just picking up too much Slayer-subtext?

I was wondering that same thing when I watched that episode, but I think that she was a princess, not a slayer, and they just wanted to show the similarities between her & Buffy so Buffy could see how bad her life could have been. Or I could be completely wrong 😛

I agree. They play with the similarities, even referring to her as the chosen one, but she also specifically says was offered in sacrifice. You could warp the meaning of "sacrifice" to suggest the sacrifice of a slayer, - it was a sacrifice to stop the demons of the nether world, or some such thing - but you'd be fanwanking.

An interesting idea for a fanfic though. You could warp it to make it work.

You said fanwanking...I'm sorry, that just got a big ole giggle outta me...
That's never occurred to me before. I mean I'd seen the similarities between the two obviously as we all have. But I never thought that she might have been the Slayer.
I mean different societies and cultures have different views on the Slayer, even then. Fo example Buffy's culture (and ours) doesn't even know of the Slayer's existance as magic and such is considered by a majority as fantasy, while in Kendra's culture the calling is known and taken very seriously. So it could be in Ampata's world they feared it and thought perhaps she was the *reason* for the demons instead of you know, the one that could stop them. Ergo sacrifice; as that seems to be how they all went around solving things then....

And she was strong enough to hold her own against Buffy. But maybe that was just crazy Inca Mummy strength.... *shrugs*

Slayer Comma The, are you going to give it a go as fanfic ?. If taken as in The Wish type of theme, change a few of her habits, instead of sucking the life out of people she might suck some of the energy out of people, lots of kisses, heck even Superstar Jonathon would get to kiss her.

I'll admit...the concept is vair tempting. Watch this space, haha
If she was the Slayer, do you really think she would've just let them sacrifice her although she didn't want that?

'The Chosen One' probably refers to how she, as the princess, was chosen as a sacrifice, which her people believed would save them all from the anger of whatever gods.

I'm prettyy sure if there was another way Buffy wouldn't have sacrificed herself, twice, but she did because although she'd want to live she also knew her role was more important than that and that the sacrifice was necessary

Yeah, but didn't you get the impression Ampata wasn't really on board with the whole sacrifice thing.

I did get that impression but we don't have enough information to reference what happened.

I mean I really don't think she was a Slayer, I think that would have been dealt with had that been the case, it is a nice little suggestion that an AU fanfic could really have fun with but it just doesn't fit everything.

I just merely wanted to point out that the Slayer is all about the sacrifice, even if she doesn't want to.

Buffy maybe, but not every slayer. Just think back to season 3 Faith. COuld you really see her sacrificing herself? I can't.

Umm she did - she sacrificed her life to pay for her mistakes

Then she sacrificed her redemption to help someone who needed it.

Also, why does, in your mind, Buffy equal something special not sacrifice but Faith is to be seen as the norm.

We also have Kendra would she sacrifice herself for the greater good?

If your answer is anything other than yes, you haven't been paying attention.

It's true you can tweak the meaning of sacrifice to refer to the sacrifice a slayer is prepared to make when she accepts the duties of a slayer, but I think with Ampata they're referring very specifically to the "sacrifice the virgin to the Gods" flavor of the word.

Also, although there are similarities between Ampata and the slayer, there are differences. There's that life draining kiss, return from the dead thing. And yes you could fanwank those things to make them refer to slayers, but there's nothing in the script saying they do.

I agree with that, and they could say she could see the future. She saw Jonathon in the evil trio thats why she didn't kiss him.
I always thought she was a slayer, but possibly her people were misunderstood to her role to them as the chosen one, so they thought the way she would protect and help her people was by being a sacrifice. thats what i thought but maybe im crazy.

I never thought of her as being a slayer, then again I never thought of her as NOT being a slayer either, I don't think one episode gives enough information to go by.

I think they play on the similarities between her and the slayer.. one girl chosen to protect/defend etc.
But she was a princess, and the similarities end with the way they had to defend.... Ampata was chosen to defend the village through sacrifice, where Buffy defends through fighting... i just think the similarites are done in order for Buffy (and the audience) to better understand and sympathise with the character's plight, rather than see her as an evil life force sucking mummy thing.

i was just thinking how this would be a great question to pose to Joss if ever one of us got the blessed chance to do so lol. i'd like to hear what he had to say.

I think it was cool that they left if open just enough to make us wonder IF Ampata was a Slayer or some Incan version thereof. Maybe they sacrificed her, believing that her spirit would go to the underworld to kill the Baddies, instead of Buffy offing them here. Just an idea.

*walks off whistling*

i have never given it thought before but now that you point it out......

*walks off to re-watch the horrid ep*

i see what you mean hmm... yes i think she was or some thing simalar
