Was Angel a Hero?

Mhm, I am not really sure what you want to hear now... I mean I think that it is clear for everybody that Angel was a hero. Even for Spuffys. (But maybe Spike was the better hero for them 🙂) The right question would be: Is Angel a better hero than "..."!

I think that the late Robert Heinlein described Angel perfectly with his definition of the phrase "knight errant." A knight errant is a basically good man on a mission (in Angel's case, of course, that would be his redemption). And as is quite often the case, knights errant spend more than a few nights erring. Angel WANTED to be a hero. He TRIED to be a champion. For the most part, he succeeded. But no one can deny the fact that he slipped on several occasions, whether by honest mistake, out of what he considered justifiable malice, or from just plain stupidity. That doesn't make him any less a good man, it just makes him the poster child for works in progress.
Maybe, if he manages not to get himself dusted by Fray's time, he'll get it right. Hopefully.

I think Angel started out as a mission for redemption, but he proved that he really didn't care abotu himself in Shanshu to L.A. when his death was prophecized. Then, the one thign he desired (The Shanshu Prophecy) he signed away for the greater good in seaosn 5

Of course he is! Every day. Instead of sitting in a lump all "woe is me" about the horrors he committed as Angelus, he sacrifices his life to make the world a better place, Shanshu prophecy or not.
Heroes are faulted and heroes make mistakes. They are vulnerable to temptation and desire. Angel is no exception.

I don't know. A whole lot of ham and a large portion of cheese seems to describe Ol' Broody pretty well to me.
I would say it's fairly obvious that Angel is a hero, a man who does that many heroic acts, whatever his motivation, has to be considered a hero... and considering his motivation is to make up for past wrongs then I would say that is honourable, further strengthening his status as a hero!
