Was Anya still a Vengeance demon? Should she have died?

This has been bugging me for SO long and it may be obvious so I thought I would ask...

Anya was technically still a vengeance demon, at the end of S7, right?

D'hoffran wanted the life and soul of a vengeance demon, the twist being that when Anya/Anyanka agreed, Halfrek appeared and he took HER life and soul... so Anya was still a vengeance demon.


Shouldn't this have meant she didn't die at the end of S7 when she was slashed in half?

This may have an obvious answer, but it has been bugging me for years now so I needed to ask!

No... Anya was freed at the end of "Selfless" when D'Hoffryn killed Halfrek. He told her this, so she was no longer a vengeance demon. Here's a quote from the transcript:

D'HOFFRYN Who did you think you were dealing with? Did you think it would be that easy to get away?

ANYA Why?

D'HOFFRYN Why? Because you wished it!

ANYA But she was yours.

D'HOFFRYN Like you were mine? Haven't I taught you anything, Anya? Never go for the kill when you can go for the pain. (Xander starts for D'Hoffryn, but Buffy stops him) Hold him back, Slayer. Wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. I've got plenty of girls. There will always be vengeance demons. But now you, Anya, you're out. Congratulations. You're wish is granted.

ANYA You should've killed me.

Sadly, as HisMrs said, she wasn't anymore. My wish is that we could have seen her fighting the good fight with vengeance demon strenght and powers 🙁
