Was Buffy; Giles' first Slayer?

I was wondering did Giles have any other Slayers before Buffy? Or was she his first Slayer to protect?

It's never really specified, but I don't have any doubt that Buffy was Giles' first Slayer.

We can see pretty plainly in S1 that he's not accustomed to dealing with teenagers at all, and he's completely thrown for a loop whenever Buffy acts against his judgement (although that could just be Buffy being Buffy I guess). He's actually a lot like Wesley in S3. He's very by the book without any real field experience, or so it seems at least. I mean, he's much more capable than Wesley was when we first met them both, but I always felt like Giles was as new to what he was doing as Buffy was, which is one reason why I think they meshed so well.

Did watchers take on more than one slayer ever?

My impression from the show was that whenever a slayer dies their watcher basically quits and more or less goes into retirement.
That has obviously changed now with the happenings in season 7 and the comics though.

I agree, and I also want to add, that if he had ever had a slayer before, it would have been mentioned. Specially in Fool For Love, but before that as well.

I never thought Giles had any other Slayers than Buffy. It seemed to me he was waiting for her, there in Sunnydale.

He wasn't in Sunnydale for long before Buffy turned up, he was the new librarian, and he had been at a British mueum before or the British museum, as said by Willow. And highlighted by Buffy's reaction to him being new. Did she think that he was her new watcher as the one in the film, Merrick, had just died.

I dont think the tv series is meant to be a continuation of the movie, she was 18 in the movie and 16 in season 1.

Yes, if that is considered canon, Buffy is Giles' first Slayer. His first reaction is "What kind of name is Buffy?!" I love that comic! 🙂

I think the basics are still kept in place. Merrick appears in the LA flashback in Becoming part 1. The comic the pp mentioned told how Buffy was called, the details of her relationship with Merrick, & Merrick's death. It was written by Joss during the show, so I think we can safely ascertain that he means the material to be canon.

I apologize, Whedon didn't write Origin, Dark Horse writers wrote it based on Joss' original screenplay. According to Wikipedia (which as we know is not always accurate):

Whedon stated: "The origin comic, though I have issues with it, CAN pretty much be accepted as canonical. They did a cool job of combining the movie script (the SCRIPT) with the series, that was nice, and using the series Merrick and not a certain OTHER thespian [referring to Donald Sutherland] who shall remain hated."
