Was he his greatest weapon?

The Master said that the Annointed One "would be his greatest weapon against the Slayer." does anyone know what the annointed did exactly besides add a few extra seconds to the show?
 
Well, Luc the red herring of annointedness was actually pretty badass...and that street-preacher-bodybuilder-whacko-serial-killer guy also did a lot of damage.

But you're right. The only thing the annoying one ever did was lead Buffy by the hand to her death. Which is, I'm guessing, what made him a great weapon: leading the slayer to the Master's lair since the Master didn't have his get out of jail free card yet.
 
Well I could take Buffy's hand (and probably die from happyness doing it) and lead her to her death (which i wouldnt!). That wouldn't make me anything special.
 
I don't think he had any real purpose other than "adding a few seconds to the show". I thought his role was pretty pointless myself.

I hardly think he was ever used properly, in season 2 we saw he was going to be up to something, but then Spike fried him, so we'll never know!
 
He was such a pointless character which was there to just annoy you, just like Wood, LOL.
 
I can't remember the exact quote, but the one from the crazy monk that sent out e-mails to Jenny.

It was something about everyone lying down with the little child to lead them. So, he lead Buff to the Master and he killed her. But I think then, that the annoited was supposed to lead other bad things to destroying the world along with the Master. Sort of like the Master's right hand.

But, in the end, the kid was stupid and 'the annoying one' and he got burned, so all he did was just added time to the show as said by everybody else.
 
great question parker summers.... the annoying was not much of a wepon, he was a very annoying kid, who did nothing, just pretended to be scary, was the masters little pet and trried to raise the master....
 
To me the Anointed One was just there to send Buffy to her death, which he did. He may have been a greater threat in the future if he hadnt got killed. Joss only killed him off because the actor who played him was well growing into maturity.
 
anyone of the masters vampires could have led buffy to her death, he was pointless, they probably intended to do more with him but never had teh time or chance. didnt spike call him the annoying one in teh episode he killed him in? i thought he did in one of them, i liked when he was killed, he was completely pointless
 
No way man. The annointed one served a far great purpose in BtVS. He ushered in a new era of irreverance, that created the landmark break of Buffy from the old movie style (prophecies, and sober responsibility) and into the new season2 style: Irreverance, chaos and mayhem. Ever the foil for the theme (in the first 5 seasons anyway), Buffy, too, changed over that stretch of episodes. She became more aware of her responsiblities, in counterpoint to the big bads' losing their sense of responsibility.

In my opinion. the Annoying one's greatest purpose, was to be fed to Spike to mark that break in theme in the most dramatic way possible. It was like a breath of fresh air finally let into a stuffy room. I laughed for 10 minutes after that episode. I had been wanting to do the same thing to the little bugger for quite some time. 🙂 Before Spike, being bad was never so good!
 
I see what you're saying. Atleast one person thinks he had a purpose lol.
 
In terms of what extra value he had to the show, I have to agree, he had none. I have to admit, I have never seen the movie, and I really don't think it's part of the verse. The show has always been in a continious evolution, with some key-points, the death of the Annoying not being one of them. The arrival of Spike, yes.
