Was I the only person who was not impressed at all by SERENITY?

I thought that compared to the fantastic series, the movie was nothing more than a big-budget whimper.

I understand that in the time constraints of a motion picture, movies have to be plot-oriented rather than character-oriented (well, in Hollywood, anyway), but a nice balance in the case of SERENITY would have been nice. The movie lacked the "homey" feel of the show and all I felt I got out of it were some lame, overdone action sequences that were put in the movie only because they were possible with an increased budget that the show obviously didn't have. The only real purpose it served was to tie up loose ends so as a sort of epilogue for the series, I'd say it's decent...but on its own as a film? Not impressive at all. But maybe it wasn't supposed to be...

Yeah, it wasn't what I was hoping for. I wish they would have had more about Blue Sun and the blue-handed guys. They were creepy, but cool.
I was a LITTLE annoyed by some of the lack of continuity. I know Joss had to try to hook people who hadn't seen the show, but Mal's attitude toward Simon and River was completely different in the movie than it had developed into in the show. And Simon's toward everyone else likewise. AND the rescuing River sequence was different than Simon's story about it.

Agreed. I liked the film and enjoy re-watching it at times, but it did lack the magic the show had. And yes, the characters lost all of their development.

I wouldn't say that I was not at all impressed, but I do agree with your assessment of the film's weaknesses. It was less impressive than the show largely because of steps taken to make it more accessible to new viewers. Even so, I think that the action sequences and the overall story with River were incredibly engaging, as was the overall plot of the gang finding something important in which to believe and for which to fight.
 
I really liked the movie but there were two specific things that bugged me.

1. Since we only got what? 14 eps of the show, right off the bat I was like, "Where's the standard opening credits and the song?"

2. Killing off key characters. (won't spoil but then again, if you haven't seen it yet you probably don't care)

I totally agree about the standard opening! I loved Firefly's opening. It's just one example of how the "Western" vibe was missing from the movie.

Umm... also, did anyone totally get a "Bladerunner" vibe when they landed? I mean, I half expected them to stop at some crappy Chinese takeout joint and then run into some evil androids (who dream of electric sheep - bahaha).
 
My answer to your question: yes. I thought it was brilliant. I thought it was just like another episode, but better-ly made. (Wow, really bad Joss-language right there. 😛 )
 
The couple of things I didn't like was
Wash's
death, and the soundtrack. Well, it wasn't bad, but Greg Edmonson's flair wasn't there... :/

Still, it was a fantastic movie. The space battle was a helluva lot better than any of the Star Wars prequels' space battles. Plus River's a badass. 🙂
 
I thought it was a great movie. Also, i dont really see what all the fuss is about with lack of continuity. Their escape was a little different but really just a more elaborate telling of it. Any backtracking in character development was explained with the fact that Mal almost got River killed in the first mission and the Alliance had finally shown its ugly head in regard to River thus pissing Mal off.

Ohh and BTW, as a BluRay, this is a MUST HAVE. Crap loads of extras including 2 Picture-in-picture commentaires, all the extras off the 2disk special edition plus more extras and digital tours. The audio and video on the bluray is reference quality, the kind you show off your system with.

I agree. I think it's a great film. I love it more each time I re-watch it. A local theater here in Seattle showed it as it's "weekend midnight movie" and I finally got to see it on the big screen. Awesome!!!!

Serenity is one of those movies that really just needs to be seen with great sound on a big screen to be fully appreciated. The whole audience were huge Whedon geeks, and we were all singing the Firefly theme song together. It was like this little place in the world designed for me. lol

Anyway, I do understand the argument about the lack of continuity, but we also have to understand that this film was also made for people whom hadn't seen the show - so it's pretty much like a stand-alone episode with a much bigger budget.

I definitely enjoyed the movie much less than the series, and i wasn't much of a fan of the series, either. The movie just had way too much unnecessary gore in place of character development or humor, for my taste.

I did love the show's theme song, though. That probably remains my favorite part of the show.
