Were the Scoobies right to bring back Buffy?

If Buffy had died again at the tower (during the second episode), what would have happened?
 
Yeah. She sacrificed for everyone. So they have to pay her. But who would knew that she was in heaven???
Poor Buffy.

And if she died in Bargaining part 2 again, I think Osirus wouldnt allow them to bring her back again.
 
I think it was wrong. Even if they were worried that Buffy was ended in some hell dimension! She was the Slayer, and they should have faith in her getting to heaven. That's what good people does. They tore her out of a safe, warm, and happy place, and they didn't even think about she might not be in hell
 
But without it there wouldn't have been any more seasons.

Unless they had a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer that was actually about her little sister and friends...

coulnd't agree more. I was actually thinking about the fact that without Buffy (the vampire slayer) not only would we have no more show but that it would probably bring some kind of weird spin off! Though I wouldn't mind Willow, The Powerful Witch

Or bring someone back to Sunnydale and rename it "Faith the Vampire Slayer"

And later the scoobs dont like Faith that much but she still wanna hang so they do a spell to bring Buffy back and rename it "Fuffy the Vampire Slayers" 😀
 
Leaving aside the fact that the show was continuing on past Season 5 and so they needed to bring Buffy back to have an actual show,I have to say that they were in the wrong bringing Buffy back.
I know Willow says they don't know where her soul went and so it's their "duty" to save her from some Hell Dimension, I think this was wishful thinking on their part so they would have a reason to bring her back, when in reality there was no other reason beyond the fact they missed her and so wanted her back. I think it's Willow again that says, later on in the season after they find out Buffy was in fact torn from heaven, not saved from Hell, "we didn't wanna know" when Xander is all distraught saying "we didn't know". And that is true- they could have done more heavy research, something magical to find out where Buffy was (Kinda like when Angel found out Cordy was in a good place- of course he didn't know she was bored out of her skull) but they didn't. They just presumed and went ahead with the spell.

As for if Buffy had actually jumped off of the tower in Bargaining Part Two....I don't know whether she would have gone back to Heaven as it was kinda like a brand new life for her. Before she had spent years fighting and so earning her place in Heaven, and I think it was Buffy's concern/worry/fear that now she had to re-earn that place or perhaps she would never get to go back to that same place no matter what.

What is "right" and what is "wrong" depends entirely on your point of view. Even "evil" people can sometimes think what they're doing is "right", in their opinion. (E.g. Willow wanting to end the world because there's too much pain in it. To her it seemed "right", although to the general populous it seemed "wrong".) So what you're really asking, is do more people think it's "right" than the amount of people that think it's "wrong".
 
My first thought when I saw this thread yesterday was: No. Then I started thinking. Some years ago someone I knew was shot dead when she should have had at least thirty or forty years to live. If I could have worked miracles when my father phoned me, still in shock, wouldn't I do it?

Miracles? Oh yes, I would have. Both then and with hindsight. But black magic? No. When they had to take a life to reclaim a life, the price was too high. So, after mulling things over, I still think they were wrong to bring her back.

Joss&Co, however, were right to bring her back, even if I didn't always think so the first time I watched season 6.

Exactly. My thoughts when I first watched the episode were that anything that asks for the blood and life of an entirely innocent creature CANNOT be good.
 
If Buffy hadn't have been resurrected in Season 6, they could have brought Faith back (time off for good behavior, pardon for rescuing the Warden during a riot, whatever), and she would have taken over the duties of the Slayer. Willow could have tried to communicate with Buffy in order to make sure that she really was in heaven, but the spell would have gone wrong, releasing the Traveler and causing Buffy to have to return in a non-corporeal state to help Faith kill it, the results of which being that she becomes stuck on this side in a ghostly form and advises Faith (to Faith's exasperation) on how to guard the hellmouth while Willow and Tara try to find a spell to either send Buffy back to heaven or make her solid once more before her essence is completely destroyed.

After several episodes of Faith Slaying and Buffy basically becoming a nuisance to everyone with her brooding and advising, Willow stumbles upon a spell that will re-corporealize Buffy, but in order to stay solid, she has to have mind numbing sex with a soulless vampire on a regular basis.

(Once more, all's well that ends well)

It has always amazed and annoyed me how the Scoobies automatically assumed that Buffy had gone to some hell dimension. Sure, she jumped in the portal to one, but as we all could see, she came out at the other end (unlike some others who were sucked into hell dimensions, like, say, Angel). She had done so incredibly many good things, that, although it's just my opinion, there was no real reason to believe she was in hell. Their decision to bring her back was, or at least, seems, so terribly selfish. Of course they were grieving, but they didn't even consider the option that she was in some happy place. It was just, WANT - HAVE (as in, WE want Buffy back, so we have to bring her back, even if we'd have to kill half a zoo for it).

It annoys the hell (haha) out of me that the people I've grown to love could do something so incredibly selfish and, one might say, stupid.

Mhm. I'd say that a Slayer who's done her pretty much has a free pass to heaven.
I think their assumption wasn't so bad, actually.

I mean, they saw the stuff that came out of the portal (there's no deneying that what came out of all the other dimensions was unspeakable hell stuff).
And they knew that Buffy's death closed it.
They knew that Buffy's soul had gone somewhere other than her body.
& the logical, biased to give themselves a reason to bring her back, explanation was that her soul had gone to the hell dimension.
 
They thought her soul was in hell because she died inside a portal to every dimension in existence, not because she was going there anyway. It's true they were just using that to justify it but I still think it's a valid enough reason, plus there's the whole Sunnydale needs a protector thing. Personally I think they did the right thing as far as the big picture was concerned.

Yeah, I agree. I never thought it was too out-there that they assumed Buffy was in hell. The problem was, they latched onto that explanation in order to justify bringing her back to ease their own pain. They didn't allow themselves to consider any other possibility. As Willow said, they didn't want to know if Buffy was actually in heaven. She could have been in hell, and they wanted her back, so they brought her back.

I don't think it was necessarily wrong, because I truly believe they thought Buffy to be in hell. I believe they thought they were doing the right thing. Still, it's not quite right either, what they did.
