After what happened between Buffy and Joyce in the end of season 2 (their fight where she told her she was a Slayer and has a job to do, pushed her back, and Joyce told her if she leaves the house don't come back), Buffy runs off. She leaves a note to her mother and disapears to who knows where (we know, the people on the show didn't).
During the time Buffy was gone, Joyce felt guilty for Buffy's leaving. She blamed Giles though. But you can tell she was worried. All she wanted was to have her daughter back, to hug her and tell her that she loved her.
So when Buffy finally returns home, it seems as though everything between them is fine again. Until they fight at the party and Joyce says exactly how she feels and felt back then.
After that, it seems fine again. But before the party Joyce also acted like it's all fine again. But she wasn't honest. She wans't fine with Buffy's acts.
So after they get over the fight, Joyce tries really hard to make Buffy feel that she's fine with her being a Slayer. Even though she really really wasn't (you can understand her). But the fact that she tried too hard to show that she's okay with the Slayer stuff even though it wasn't the case, makes her a little fake. Doesn't really matter what the reasons are.
Do you think she was overly suppotive in season 3, just to try to show that she's okay with the Slayer thing?
