Was Prophecy Girl Joss' nod to the movie?

Buffy's dress in Prophecy Girl got me thinking about the similarities in this episode with the Buffy movie. Do you think Joss added the elements to this episode from the movie he had wanted to make?
 
I've never thought about it but now that you say it, it makes sense. He didn't really get to make the movie he wanted to make but he probably had the idea of it at the back of his mind all the time, what he wished he would have looked like... I wouldn't at all be surprised it he had taken elements of his original script and mixed it into "Prophecy girl" (they didn't know at that point they were going to be picked up right? Perhaps it was a bit of a 'last shot' to get what he wanted out there?)
 
The relationship between season 1 and the movie is downright schizophrenic. On one hand the movie is supposedly not canonical so the events from the movie never actually happened but on the other hand season 1 is full of movie references, cues and continuity. No, seriously. Buffy's decision to stick to Willow and Xander over Cordy and her clique is a direct consequence of her character development that took place in the movie. As is Buffy as a cheerleader, Buffy's reaction when she meets another watcher and so on ( not to mention that in the first few episodes SMG pretty much emulates Kristy Swanson's interpretation of the character ) Really, the character makes little sense without all the development that happened in the film. Gee, too bad it never happened.

By the way, the dress is nice but I prefer the movie version. I think that Kristy fills it out just a tad nicer, yeah.

No, I think it's more of a cannibalized remix.
 
Well that's sort of what I meant - he took pieces of his original idea and reformulated them into Prophecy Girl.

My personal view on the movie regarding canon is that it fits in as much as it can. Who Buffy used to be, her relationship with Merrick etc. The bits that don't make sense continuity-wise I just throw out. But that's just me.
 
I never thought about it that way, but I agree with [MENTION=9799]Taake[/MENTION]... It definitely makes sense and works as a nice little nod to the movie. 🙂 it also has the cheesiness of the movie; more so than any other episode of the series. I think you may be onto something. 😉
 
There's no doubt in my mind that Prophecy Girl was Joss's way of remaking the movie to his own liking. You have the dance (although we never see it), Buffy wearing the prom dress, and her fight with the vampire king in which she kills him. Hands down the best episode of Season One. I especially love the scene when Xander confesses his true feelings to Buffy.
