Was she lying?

Becasue of all those reasons you said, if she had taken that moment to say it, he would have believed it. And if she did she would have taken that moment.

Edit: Oh and we know from experience that Buffy has no problem taking a moment to tell people she loves them, In season 2, Buffy takes a moment to calm Angel down and tell him that she loves him, even though the portal was opening behind him.

And in season 5 The portal was open, Buffy had seen a bolt destroy both a street and a building, and a dragon come out of it, but she took the moment to tell Dawn she loves her.
 
I personally think that the scene meant that she truly did love him- just not in the way he'd wanted. I think it was a kind of combination of Buffy saying goodbye as well as giving him the one gift he'd wanted for so long- love. It would tie in with the "No you don't, but thanks for saying it" line as well; she knew how she felt, Spike knew how she felt, but it didn't really matter at that point. It was their last few moments together, and it seemed as though they had both reached a point of understanding between them. Like all the events that the two had been through together (as friend, lover, and foe) were finally brought to a close of sorts, but still with enough "open-endedness" that it didn't seem TOO much like "the final, very very END", you know?

I always found (especially by the end of season 7) that Spike and Buffy really did get close, almost like lifelong friends if nothing else. They seemed to have this almost bond, they just understood each other and were there for each other, but it had something.... a level of maturity and just "real" I suppose, that made it different than any of the relationships (of any kind) we'd seen on the show before.

And I think in that scene, it was like (as I mentioned) Buffy wanted him to go out with that thought in mind, that he had the love he'd longer for from her, but Spike knew how she felt about him. That (even if she wanted to) she just didn't love him the way he wanted (and there seemed to be this moment/look of clairity when he said that) and that was (for lack of a better word) fine. And he still appreciated what she said more than anything else.

That's my take on it anyway, I'm sure that many people have different opinions. I personally loved the scene myself, definetly a great piece of work. 🙂
 
Oh yeah! She loved Spike. Who wouldn't. They shared a lot together and Spike was there for her when she couldn't tell her friends stuff in Season 6.

No, I dont think Buffy was lying. Buffy isn't the type of person to say 'I Love You' to someone and not mean it. I think Buffy did love Spike, but never thought about it until she relised she may never see him again.
 
Lol..like Spike said..Buffy and Angel could never be friends..they will love until it kills them..I'm a huge spuffy shipper..she did love spike but she wasn't in love with him..same with Spike I think at that point he was no longer "IN" love for her..
do you remember he said "I love you not because I can't have you"? I think at that point it was purely platonic..but hey maybe something could have developed..who knows. But one thing we know for sure..the slayer will never fall in love with a NORMAL man.
 
I personaly believe that Buffy was completely truthful when she said that she loved Spike. I also believe, and this is strictly my own opinion, that the writers or Whedon, or SOMEONE, missed a great opportunity to tie this finale in with the end of Season Five. Buffy should have said, "I'll always love you," as a parallel to Spike's statement in "Gift," "I know you'll never love me..." That,to me, would have made Spike's reply more understandable. He really didn't believe her, and probably never would.
 
I think Buffy said it herself when she spoke to Angel at the beginning of Chosen:

ANGEL: I'm getting the brush off for Captain Peroxide. It doesn't necessarily bring out the champion in me.

BUFFY: You're not getting the brush off. Are you just gonna come here and go all Dawson on me every time I have a boyfriend?

ANGEL: Aha! Boyfriend!

BUFFY:He's not. But...he is in my heart.

As a Bangel fan I can't belive I'm saying this 😉 But I do think she loved him. He'd been her emotional support throughout season 7. He'd stood by her when no ones else had, when her friends kicked her out. She would have been an incredibly cold person not to feel even a little bit in love with him.
 
I dont think she was lying.. as members have posted about what they heard in the commentary.. as well as how Buffy said this line.. its seems as though she does.. and I think always will. She even admitted to loving him.. so why not now.. why not at this point where they had gotten so close.. even closer than before
 
Just gonna jump in here.

No, I believe she was not lying. She loved Spike (out of the idea, but who wouldn't?) and would never lie to him anyway about anything. I'm following those who've said she loves him but she was never "in love" with him.

I really don't think that Buffy was lying. It was just soooooo obvious that she really meant it. You could see it in her eyes, her face, her voice and even her body.

Can you clarify it being obvious in "her eyes, face, voice and body"?
