Was Spike just lucky?

My favorite episode is Fool For Love, and I love the well written dialogue by Spike of explaining that every Slayer has a death wish and that's why they lost. But I got to thinking, and I think that them "wanting death" nothing to do with it. Both Slayers, Nikki Wood and Xin Rong, were about to kill Spike but something happened that made them just lose their focus: the explosion outside in 1900 and the blackout on the subway in 1977. The distractions allowed Spike to get out of a situation where he would be dust. Van Halen vampire from the beginning that staked Buffy had luck too when he got her in the gut.
 
Spike said himself that all it took was one good day. I think he recognised that it was luck, but believed that if each Slayer hadn't had just the tinyest deathwish, even the distractions wouldn't have killed them.

I think luck plays a factor in everything. Sure Spike got in while the gettin was good. In a fight to the death you kind of have to. To beat your opponent you have to take advantage of their weak spots, or moments. I think Spike did what he had to do. And maybe what any other vamp in his place would've done. Sure luck played a minor role, But I don't think it was a one role play.
 
i think that Spike realizes he was lucky but he's saying that a little part of the Slayer wants to die so then she doesn't have to be the Slayer anymore and hide who she is from everyone and she just wants to get rid of all of that, and death is the only way. i think that that's what he was saying.

Sad, but true. I think you are right.
Spike definitely got lucky. But the point here is that he's been living day to day - in the face of danger in all shapes and forms. Angelus couldn't teach him one thing - the artistry of kill. Spike chose to remain a rebel, an "animal" as Angelus had put it.
He was chasing his own glory and yes, he got lucky. But the point is - unless you dare, you are nowhere.
 
I could get all Spike defensive here and try and argue that Spike didn't get lucky, he is just an incredibly skilled fighter and toyed with the slayers until he decided to go for the kill just at the moment, coincidentally, that something distracted them!

But I won't! 🙂

No, it's fair to say that in both fights Spike got lucky but ultimately in most fights anyone is involved in the winner is the one who made the most of a lucky moment or distraction, so who can blame him?

I do think what he said about the deathwish thing is true though, a slayer is far too connected to death for her not to feel a romantic connection to it, it's inevitable.
 
Luck of The Fight

Spike is skilled. The Slayers were skilled. In a fight you may be the better fighter skillwise but maybe not streetwise. The best fighter uses every sinlge second that could be left up to chance and makes it their own.
So yea maybe he was just lucky. Maybe it was just a deathwish. Maybe it was both. Still doesn't answer the question of who made the fight their own.
Does that make sense at all...?
 
Of course Spike was lucky, luck is a factor in both of those fights. But that's not all there is to it. Like some people above me have said, the slayers must have had a tiny bit of doubt and a wish for death for them to be defeated. Slayers are, in effect, ostracized from the rest of society, they have to hide their entire existences from everyone they care about. After a while, they just want to give up.

I know that some very small part of a Slayer may want that and everything and after all they live death all the time because Slayer... But wouldn't there be a larger part of them wanting to survive coz isn't that basic human instinct? Then again, extroadinary circumstances I guess.
 
I think spike was lucky but I also think he was right, all humans long for peace in some way or another, or as glory put it an escape, which is why I think some people drink/ do drugs etc However for a slayer their lives are ten times more chaotic than a reglar persons life so drugs/drink aint gonna do the job, but death will. We know this as a fact because of buffys resurection where she initially wanted to return to heaven and hated being on earth where she had no peace

Yeah, I totally agree with the human instinct thing. That is human instinct, trying to survive. I also agree that it's a very, very small part of a slayer that wants to die, just enough for her to slip up, and we know that slip-ups are a big no-no when you're fighting a big bad. 😉
 
I dont think its a small bit, I think its their secret wish to die, so all the pain ends, although I dont think they are concious of this wish, I think its more of a subconcious wish
