I think the only reason Spike is in Buffy is because they can't have Angel on the show. So Spike is the next best thing. Spike has a lot of similarities (sp) to Angel.

Both have a soul.
Both wear same kind of cloths.
Both had relationship with Buffy.
Spike has the same role now in Buffy as Angel did.

That's all I can think of now.
 
You have a point their. Why are they re-creating characters in Buffy instead of making more new ones?
 
Joss has said that he originally wanted Drusilla for the 4th Season but when Juliet Landau wasnt avaible to become a regular he instantly called up James Marsters to play the character Spike as a regular cast member.
 
having drusilla as a regular would be wack. unless you meant she was going to be a guest star

and yes, spike is angel jr.

yeah I do think Spike was a replacement for Angel cause if Angel had stayed Spike wouldnt have become a main castmember probably but Anya may have been a replacement for Cordy but even if Cordy stayed I think Anya would have become a regular anyway cause her charecter is different somewhat and the writers and fans liked her and its weird knowing that Emma wasnt the orignal choice for Anya
 
Spike was supposed to be the comic relief because in s4, and he was

and actually he isnothing like angel, ok, vampire, soul, buffy-loving, that ends right there...
 
yeah spike i find is very different from angel... there's a certain tension between spike and buffy that wouldnt be there between angel and buffy...

i think having dru for s4 as a regular wouldve been so awesome...

Spike is different from Angel, but I think he basically is a replacement for him, esp. in the loving Buffy department. I mean, Joss tried to give Buffy a normal guy to be in a relationship, and look at how well that turned out...
 
While Spike and Angel have some similarites, their personalities are SO different! Spike is much cuter, funnier, sexier, and way less annoying than Angel, sorry 🙂
 
yes, but Anya was just a recurring character in season 4, she joined full mode later on.... James has said in interviews that he was there to replace cordy, because he was the only one who could get away with saying the most insensitive things
 
i wouldnt say that riley was a normal boyfriend so buffy never has had a normal long lasting relationship.
i dont think spike was a replacement for angel at that time JW knew how intence the fans were about angel and buffy s love so at that point in time he couldnt try to replace angel because it wouldnt have gone over well with fans

i think they waited and played each season by what the veiwers thought at the end of each season
 
Spike was a major character in season two, guys!

Angel was in season two.

Both existing in the show at the same time clearly points out that one was not a replacement for the other.
 
we're talking about after Angel left the show and they brought Spike back in and Spike was suppose to be killed in S2 after Drusilla got back to full streangth and probably if Angel had stayed Spike probably wouldnt have become a regular, he probably wouldve made some appearnces
 
spike was supposed to be killed in that ep, but he wasn't spared because they wanted him to replace angel, by that time, they didn't even know they were going to make an angel series
