Was Spike Put In Buffy As A Replacement For Angel?

Angel was a regular in S1, then became full cast member in S2 when Spike appeared for the first time. I remember a transcript of an interview where JM said, that he was asked back, because the audience liked him.
Spike only appeared in one ep in S3, when Angel was still part of the team and then came back in S4 with Harmony. He became a full cast member later that season and then in S5 and S6.
Ok, he had this chip in his head, but in NO way could he be seen as a replacement for Angel! Spike is funny, sexy, extrovert while Angel is broody, moody and an introvert.
Love interest for Buffy? He loved her, but she did not love him.
Spike's soul - he went to get it voluntarily
Angel's soul - was forced on him and when ever he looses it, he doesn't want it back.
Those two are soooo different - no way could either of them replace the other!
I am looking forward to next season of Angel, when JM joins the cast! This will show everybody just how different they are.
 
everything angelique said is truth... except angel was a recurring character in s1, just a guest star, he became a regular in s2
 
he wasnt a replacement i think he was her next love simply becauae it created a big uproar with the fans and joss likes that
