Was Willow destined to be a witch?

yeah. I think it was in her blood. I mean, she was always good with anything related to physics and sciences and all.

Hmm, I never thought about it! I always thought that she had the potential in her to be a powerful witch, but if she hadn't met Buffy and hadn't picked up a spellbook I don't think she would have just come across it on her own and it would just lie dormant. But who knows!

Well she knew Amy... so maybe she'd still have picked it up one way or another...

I think she would have had the potential to become one, like how Amy was born into it but still wasn't as powerful as Willow.

But I don't think if she hadn't have started messing around with Magick it would have happened, her magick seemed to grow after a big even, like Restoring Angels soul started it, then after the joining spell in season 4 she became allot better then she went all dark on glory in Season 5 and brought Buffy back which lead to season 6, then the slayer activation spell seemed to lead to a Willow able to do anything she wanted in Season 8 comics.

When she is reciting the ritual in Becoming Pt2 and she goes into 'autopilot' and starts speaking the old lost language I always read that as her subconscious taking over, so the power was already within her.

I think it might have been the magic/spell taking her over. Not that her subconscious gaver her power

I believe this:

She has the ability to do magic, seemingly stronger than some people, but it would have lied dormant if it hadn't been activated.

Unless you mean it was her destiny, as in some devine entities plan. Then I'm thinking/hoping: no. I don't believe in destiny.

Yes. I think that exactly what she did with it was not predestined... but I think that being a powerful witch was something always in the cards for her

Skytteflickan88 I am more than willing to accept that as a possibility. I don't know one way or another for sure but I would like to think that Willow becoming all witchy was planned in advance and this was the first teaser.

After watching season 4 of Angel, it would appear that people have little choice in what they do. If Skip told the truth about Jasmine affecting everyone around Cordy, what's to say she wasn't controlling the lives of the people around her in Sunnydale too?

Not saying that Jasmine is the reason for everything that happens in the Buffyverse, but she poses the question as to whether anyone has any choice in anything. If no, then yes - Willow was destined to become a witch.

(Lol, this is weird and rambly and I'm not sure it even makes any sense. I think I should sleep 🙄)

I hadn't thought about it from that perspective, thanks!

Yeah I agree. Well, I'm not sure if Amy was born a witch. Magic in the 'verse didn't seem to be portrayed like it was on Sabrina or Charmed. It doesn't seem like it can be inherited. If you practice and you're dedicated to learning the craft, you will become a powerful witch. Of course that makes one wonder, why is Willow more powerful than Amy? Amy has probably dabbled since she was a kid, seeing as her mom was a witch, yet Willow is just...more powerful. It could also be compared to a skill or a talent, like playing the violin. Just because you have played it since you were 7, that doesn't guarantee that you'll be more talented than the kid who started as a teenager. Sometimes some people are so good at something that it seems like they were born to do it, maybe Willow was like that when it came to magic.

Well, this gives me something to think about haha. I've always wondered this, why is Willow so powerful? Also, I don't think that she would have been who she is if she hadn't met Buffy. She would have gone on to study computer science at Yale...or something and she never would have met the love of her life!

Maybe Willow was more powerful than Amy because she wanted it more than Amy.
No, I don't think she was.

I think she had an innate affinity for magic, but without Willow making the choice to pursue a role in the Scooby gang, I don't know if the opportunity to practice magic would have definitely come her way. In fact, "The Wish" suggests that being a witch was not an absolute, guaranteed moment in Willow's life.

Whoa, if Willow was a witch and a vampire...that would be scary. Then again maybe vamp willow would have found magic 'boring' anyway. :p

Good point about The Wish.

This was exactly what I was going to write. Great post.
The power to be a witch must be something you have a natural talent in, willow worked hard at it but she did seem to have an innate flare for it, and considering the effect she has on the world I would say that it is her destiny to be a witch, she indirectly or directly has a million effects on so many prophecies, that it has to be fate rather than happenstance.

It always bothered me that everyone said Willow was ALL MIGHTY AND POWERFUL and as Amy said, even before Willow knew what to do with that power. I want to think that something attached itself to her soul when she gave Angel back his soul. Something that gave her that power and made it so she would be strong.

Hence why she went on auto-pilot and why she's not human now.

Nothing attached its self to Willow except Willow

If anything way way future Willow might of dumped power on her self in the past to jump start the process.
