We all know that Xander had a thing for Buffy the first three seasons, but was he in love with her? In the episode Prophecy Girl, when Xander goes to see Angel, Angel says, "You're in love with her," and Xander asks, "Aren't you?" I always thought that he just had a crush on her. What do you guys think?

I do actually think he was in love with Buffy up until season 7, I mean there is constant little bits about it, and when the demon showed Xander the "Vision" of the future, he had to make it convincing he made it out that Xander was in love with Buffy, and Xander believed this false lie. But I thin k there is a turn around in season 7, as if he comes to an understanding that he loves Buffy, But he is not in Love with her, this makes their friendship allot stronger, there are constant little bits of how close they got during season 7, like Picking Dawn up for school(Fatherly, and Husbandly thing to do), There was Movie night, they were going to have in Him and Then In Chosen when they were saying goodbye there took each others hand, none of the others did that!

I don't think Xander was in love with Buffy, I think he just loved her. I don't think he was in love with Willow, either. I'm totally convinced he was in love with Anya!

i dunno i mean i guess he really could have been in love with buffy then agian alot of people confuse being in love with being in lust... i mean he could have really just liked her alot... then agian he could have been in love with her too... so i say maybe lol

I think he was in love with her. Moreover, I believe, he always compared his girlfriends to her.

lol yeah I think it was just lust with Xander, I mean he liked her from the moment he saw her and I think its probably that supergirl syndrome thing.
I don't believe in love at first sight but of course you can have lust at first sight.

Yes, I think Xander was in love with Buffy from the first episode "Welcome to the Hellmouth". He keeps trying to find an opportunity to get that across to her in Season 1. Finally he directly asks her out in "Prophecy Girl" and gets turned down. After that I think he reconciled himself to being a best friend and not a boyfriend.

I think the shadow of Buffy was there in his later relationships, with Cordelia and with Anya, but that doesn't mean he didn't genuinely care for them as his loves.

It's kind of intriguing, how Buffy seems to know through the rest of the series what Xander feels or felt for her at one time, but for the most part just sets it aside.

Exactly
See i can't remember who said it but they were actually spot on.
All love at 16 is that eternal, end of the world if you go, i'm your soul mate love, and thats what Xander had for Buffy, and what Buffy had for Angel, what Willow had for Xander, and i think that is what is the driving force for at least 2 seasons.
Then as the people mature the relationships change, so while love between them is still apparent, they ALL fall IN love with someone else.
I do agree that Xander compares Anya on occasion, especially in the early part of their relationship, but eventually they all move on passed this love and realise they will never be with each other in that way.

I agree... and I am so glad I didn't fall in love when I was 16. lol. Hmm... although I did meet my husband when I was 16. Maybe it had a delayed effect.
yeah i think that he had just a cush for buffy too. maybe we just wanted her cause he knew that she loved other guy ( sometimes it works that way, an impossible conquest)

I agree. I think for the first 3 season Xander was in love with Buffy, after those seasons I think it kind of shifted. Like Black Eye Guy said, I think Xander realised in season 7 that he loved Buffy but wasn't in love with her.

I think it was a crush. I sort of tend to belittle all high school love as being just a crush, though. I don't buy the "soul mate" or "eternal love" stuff. I never really crushed on or dated one boy consistently in high school, though, so that could be why. I dated my friend senior year... and boy, was that a disaster or was that a disaster?! I did sort of crush on my husband from afar from 16 on, though.

Anyway, I think the core Scoobies were family. I think that by Season 3, the core scoobies were family -- beyond crushes and all that stuff. I think Xander always carried a bit of a nostalgic-for-16 torch for Buffy, but more than that, I think they were friends. I think he realized that in season 4 (or was it 5) when he gave that "I'm in love with you" speech to Anya right after sending Buffy to chase after Riley. For me, that's always been the moment when Xander "woke up" so to speak and realized that he and Buffy are great family-like friends, but that he's got something real and powerful with Anya that he wouldn't have with Buffy -- that being love.

I agree...and I know what you mean by disaster crushing on your best friend is NOT fun!!
I think he cared about her alot but I don't know if I could ever say he was in love with her. I think he could hve been if something happened between them but he never got the chance to see what may have been.

At the same time, I think that if something had happened between them -- say in season 7 -- it could have been great. At least in my experience, there's a difference between dating your friend in high school and dating your friend when you're older. The guy with whom the perky, petite blonde is "just friends" in high school is the guy she doesn't respect. He lacks something superficial (like "cuteness" or social standing) that she thinks is essential if a guy is going to be worthy of dating her. He's "beneath her." That changes when she gets older. The guy she's friends with when she's older is the guy whom she respects and admires too much to take the risk of ruining it. That, or the timing isn't right. The good ones are usually taken.

I was the perky, petite blonde (I actually look a little like SMG, only minus the stylists) who took the risk both times. In high school, it was a disaster. The friendship did not survive. Later, in my early 20s, a long-time friend became available at around the same time that a relationship of mine ended. We both tried to deny it for a long time because we were afraid of ruining the friendship (and there were some other factors at play, too). Ultimately, we took the risk, and now we're married. Best decision we ever made. A romantic relationship that is built on a longstanding friendship is truly ideal. Think about it: no awkward getting-to-know-you phase, no awkward sexual history conversation, and no worries about "meeting the parents" cuz they've already met years ago. You skip all that stuff and jump right into a relationship that features the comfort and trust that only come with time.

Based solely on my experience, then, I think a Buffy/Xander relationship could be great if Buffy would drop the Xander block from her brain and be willing to take the risk. But that's a big risk. After all, Xander's the only guy who's never left her. If she ruins that... umm, bad. So I don't know if Buffy would ever take that risk. Something big would have to prompt her.

I get what your saying but I also find that Xander seems to turn on Buffy.A lot. Unlike Angel and Spike, he doesn't have her back all the time. It really bugged me how in season 7 he could preach to the potentials about how Buffy had earned all their trust and then throw her out of the house?
