Giles or Wesley. Who was the best at Watching?
Both very smart and full of knowlege. Both capable of magic. Fightingwise it was Giles at first but Wes overtook him by the end. If you were a Slayer, who would you pick as your Watcher?

Giles definitely. Wes was just... goofy, I guess you could call it. He was very knowledgeable but he was like the poster boy for being a Watcher. lol Giles had more of a personality and he he was extremely helpful and understanding. Plus it's Giles 😀

Giles. I like Giles. Wesley was pretty funny when he came to Buffy, he was lost, and everybody made fun of him. But I like Giles. He's not just a watcher, he's their friend and like a father to Buffy 🙂

When are we supposed to compare them? Wesley stopped being a watcher before he showed up on Angel so with the change he did it's not that easy to know how he'd be in the watcher role. As it looks now Giles seem to be the more social and friendly one. But look at Btvs season 1 and 7 and the relationship between him and Buffy. None of them are really what we think of when we think about their relationship is it? Why we like Giles together with Buffy is because their relationship had time to grow. Wesley never had that chance. And the Wesley we saw in Btvs didn't have enough experience to compare with Giles which at least partially comes down to age. Giles was probably not the best watcher at a young age either.

I'm not sure he'd been the best but Wesley needs so love so I'll go with him. Even if my gender stops me from being a slayer. 😉

To be honest I don't know who's more dangerous: both are extremely clever, skilled, able to choose the big picture before loyalty or friendship and both can be easily shattered by their own emotions.

I'll go with Wesley: he evolved so much from an idealistic watcher we saw him first. Giles never got over the old teaching of the Watchers Council.

Really, it depends on what you consider a Watcher to be. Giles was certainly the most helpful to Buffy in that he actually took part in patrolling the hellmouth, fighting demons, and such, but from the few times that the other Watchers visited from England, I got the distinct feeling that they were not happy with the way that he was fulfilling his duties. I think that the traditional Watcher's duty, once the Potential has been trained and Called is to do exactly what his title implies: watch. At best, he should fill the same role as an athlete's coach. He trains and directs, but never actually participates in the action. From that point on, he basically just chronicles the life, career, and death of Slayer X, maintaining as much detatchment as possible and doing everything that he can to keep her activities covert.

By that standard, despite his goofiness, which was almost certainly due primarily to his youth and lack of experience, Wesley probably fulfilled the actual duties of Watcher better than Giles did, because he maintained his detachment more.
