Watching Season 4 again

It's not as bad as I thought. It's not as bad as I remember. It's not good compared to the rest of the show but it's decent.
 
Season 4 has some mighty fine episodes that's for sure! Restless, Hush, Something Blue to name a few. (hehe it rhymed)
 
I never understand the hate for season 4. It has some of the best standalone episodes of the series (Fear Itself, Pangs, Something Blue, Hush, A New Man, Who Are You, Superstar, Restless...) and though the central arc isn't as strong as it could be, I don't think it's as bad as some make out, either.

I love season 4!

I like season 4. Something Blue is one of the best episodes, I love it. Hush was super-creative IMO. I never got the season 4 hate either.
 
Oh, I totally hated it at first, but to be honest there are quite a few things about it that I like about Seaon 4 more than 5,6 or 7. I prefer the idea of the initiative and Adam to the evil trio... And Season 4 didn't have pain in the arse Dawn, or hideous potentials!

I love S4. It had some problems, sure, but none big enough to make the show unenjoyable. The standalones - Hush, Restless, Fear Itself, This Year's Girl/Who Are You, etc - were brilliant, and I think that the arc isn't as bad as people make out. The Initiative is a good idea but not implemented well, and Adam is a little dull but a perfectly servicable villain.

Season 4 had the lamest Big Bad but until Adam the Initiative was not that bad.
And I think it is at least in the Top 3 of seasons with the most great episodes like Fear Itself, Pangs, Hush, A new man, Where the wild things are, The Yoko Factor, Restless and my favourite episode of all time: Who are you? Plus it had Riley! It's sweet to watch the beginning of Briley before it became ... you know, vampire brothels and stuff.

LOL, I agree, although we're probably in the minority. I, too, have discovered a newfound admiration for season 4.
 
I watched Pang, Something Blue and Hush last night.
What an amazing string of episodes that is. Could call all 3 my favorite episode of Buffy. lol

Adam is a bit boring. That's the only drawback with season 4 imho.
But it's just a small one. It doesn't bother me much.

ok...here are my feelings about season 4. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I think is "meh"

I hated Riley and the whole initiative thing and Adam. Adam was one of the worst big bads in the series. And every time I looked at Riley, I wanted to punch him, in the face.

However, season 4 brought a lot of great episodes including Hush which was so good it was nominated for an Emmy(was it this one? lol) anyways, also, It brought fourth the introduction of Tara and one of the greatest love stories in the Buffyverse, so I am grateful for that.

Adam was such a ridiculous character
I'm watching season 4 at the moment too, though it's not really re-watching because I haven't seen the whole season, only about half the episodes. I'm up to Pangs. The idea of the Initiative is intriguing, but I agree Adam is sorta lame.

I honestly think it would have been a lot more entertaining if Adam never existed and that Walsh ended up being the big bad. She could have built an army of Adam peeps and tried to take Buffy down for trying to do her work. That would have been more entertaining than the BS that was Adamn
 
Oh, I agree, they definitely should have kept Walsh on as a big bad. They should have played it a little more like they did Season 7 with The First and Caleb. Walsh falling into the role of The First and Adam being the Caleb. Only different. Haha, I'm not explaining this to well am I? Let me start again.

Okay, so I see it like this - Walsh is the big bad of Season 4, providing us with quips and intelligence and personality. She could have used her psychology knowledge to help Spike place the wedge between the scoobies in The Yoko Factor. If we had have had more time dedicated to Walsh we could have really had time to build up a bond between her and Buffy so that when Buffy finds out Walsh is evil it would have really mattered, given us a 'OMFG' reaction instead of an 'oh' reaction.

Adam could have been like a Caleb character, someone that does the fighting on behalf of the boss and providing some sort of 'bodyguard' element for Walsh. It would have been great to see Buffy and scoobies group together to take down Adam and then see Walsh try to run away like a scaredy cat only for Riley to stop her and lock her up.

Just an idea though!

I believe that was the original plan for the series, but then there were scheduling problems with the actress that played Walsh, and so she had to be killed off early and so Adam was promoted to Big Bad.
I will say it is not that bad. It has started to grow on me. Like I disliked the college years of Dawson's creek they have grown on me as well.
I think as a whole the theme wasn't as strong as others and by theme I mean Adam. He was okay not that great.
Just as episodes it has some of the best ones with good moments. I can say that season 4 has most of the funniest episodes IMO as well.
 
Ooh, I like Cait's scenario, it would have also made Riley finding out about Walsh even more poignant. And yes, it should've definitely been him locking her up or killing her.
 
First time through I really didn't like season 4, I even skipped it on my second time through. If I'm honest I think a large part had to do with the changes. I love the earlier seasons at Sunnydale High with the Library and everything and having season 4 so different took time to adjust.

I have since come to like season 4 a lot though. It brings us so much including Spike as a more permanent character (even though he doesn't become a Scooby until later), Tara and her relationship with Willow which was great and Anya as a member of the Scooby gang, we also get to see a bit of Faith which is never a bad thing! I love the episodes "This Years Girl" and "Who Are You?".

However it also gave us Riley & Adam and took away Oz which are all bad points.

I don't understand why some people knock season 4 so bad. Even though it's a lot different than the previous seasons of BtVS, I thought Season 4 was actually pretty good. It deals a lot with the characters learning to grow up and act more like adults, which I liked. I wasn't crazy about the whole Initiative storyline, but I did enjoy the season as a whole.

I love the growing up aspect of this season.
I just hate the story line of the Initiative... and Adam was weak. Like I was so excited to find out what was behind 314 and then I find out it's Adam and I'm like "well that's not interesting." But I do love a lot of the individual episodes of S4. Very fresh and different from the first 3 season...
 
I don't mind the idea of the Initiative. I mean, c'mon, the government has to know about this kind of stuff, right LOL? It's kind of X-Filesish. But I agree that it could've been executed better. Still, it gave us Graham.... 😉
